I was going to save this for World Mental Health Awareness Day, but that isn't until 10 October and let's be honest, we should be aware of our mental health every day. More meditating, less ruminating and be kind to yourself by spending your thoughts on helpful rather than negative self talk xx
Off tomorrow on break for the next month to watch football and escape the Melbourne winter!⠀
Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Naples, Amalfi, Rome and Amsterdam on the itinerary.⠀
The size of each blob on the infographic represents the amount of time I’ll spend in each country.⠀
Not sure how frequently I’ll be posting, but whatever I do post will still be design related.⠀
The Design Kids x Craig Black
I’ve been fortunate enough to spend time with the amazing @thedesignkids team on both sides of the globe now. The team of @frankieratford @thisisnotanorange and @corriemichelleanderson are just incredible human beings and do so much for our community. We discussed my thoughts and feelings on design out in the world, consistency in your work, making practice a habit, and some really important mental health insights that, as creatives we should start to acknowledge. Check out my interview with them by going on the TDK site, link in their bio!
What I found special about these amazing characters was their positivity and enthusiasm from initial messages via social media to meeting them in real life is just incredible! This made me think a lot on how important it is, in such a digital age of making connections to meet people face to face because that is when you get to truly understand and embrace such amazing people. That is why I created this lettering design called ‘Human Connection’.
Check out the process!

LAST DAY! Get 10% OFF EVERYTHING! Enter code “BOOKS” / Hard Werken: One For All / Available at www.draw-down.com / Graphic Art & Design 1979-1994. The first major publication on the work of the #Rotterdam and Los Angeles–based experimental design group #HardWerken . Hard Werken formed in the late 1970s with an underground #magazine of the same name (soon to be a collector’s item), and attracted fame in the 1980s as the riotous vanguard of #Dutchdesign . Hard Werken finally folded in 1994 after a shotgun wedding to a Dutch packaging company. Hard Werken’s #anarchic aesthetic, which disregarded #typographic conventions, characterized the group as a brash, elusive and distinctly Rotterdam phenomenon. This chunky book investigates Hard Werken’s legacy in Holland, LA and the UK, and addresses their #contemporary significance, from the innovative ways that the group combined graphic and fine-art languages to their navigation of newly emerging cultural and commercial spheres. When I was down in Houston a month ago this banner, in an awesome little store, called Manready Mercantile spoke to me. For anyone navigating the craziness and ups and downs of starting their own business or expressing their creative outlet, this sign is for you. Exactly what @manreadymerc probably intended it for.
Paul Chan (HKG), Darker, Gayer, Differnt, 2018
DARKER, GAYER, DIFFERNT is part of New Proverbs, an exclusive line of protest signs made by Paul Chan and Badlands Unlimited. They first premiered at the history making Million Women's March in Washington D.C. and New York (January 21, 2017) and have since appeared at the LGBTQ solidarity rally at the Stonewall Inn in New York (February 4, 2017), the General Strike rally in Washington Square Park (February 17, 2017), the ACT UP 30th Anniversary Rally (March 30, 2017), and other public protests around the US.
The phrase comes from former Fox News executive vice president John Moody, who wrote in a news column bemoaning the diversity of the 2018 US winter olympic team. Moody wrote, "Unless it’s changed overnight, the motto of the Olympics, since 1894, has been “Faster, Higher, Stronger.” It appears the U.S. Olympic Committee would like to change that to “Darker, Gayer, Different.” The column was taken down a day after it was posted and Moody has since left Fox News.
Beautiful and provocative, the New Proverbs #signs are inspired in part by the posters of the infamous Westboro Baptist Church, arguably one of the pioneering Christian hate speech groups in America. The New Proverbs take visual cues from the color combinations and #typographic treatments of the original church signs. But the messaged do not disparage the #LGBTQ community, Catholics and other Christians, Muslims, Jews, American soldiers and politicians—like the Westboro signs.
DARKER GAYER DIFFERNT is specially printed on corrugated plastic. The sign is stiff and durable. It is ready to be used in any public #protest or town hall meeting you attend. The sign can also be hung in your office or home, to let your friends, colleagues, and neighbors know exactly what you think. »
