This past Saturday, a legend passed away! Wilfred DeFour died in his home in Harlem, NY at the age of 100. Some of you have no idea who this man was! So let me tell you...In the early 1940โ€™s, racial segregation and discrimination were at an all time high in the United States! If you were a black person in those days, you barely had any rights! Yet a small group of African American men had a dream! They wanted to join the military and become fighter pilots. In those days, blacks were considered to have neither the skill, nor the intelligence to fly aircraft! But these brave men defied the odds, even in the face of constant ridicule and badgering from the white Air Force recruits! In fact, whites refused to train with these men simply because of the colour of their skin and so they were shipped off to train at the Tuskegee Army Airfield, in Alabama. Their program was considered an experiment and many expected that they would fail! But these men proved everyone wrong and they passed with flying colours, becoming the first all black fighter squadron to be deployed during World War II. The Tuskegee Airmen, also known as Red Tails, due the tails of their aircraft being painted red, as a way of separating them from the white pilots! Wilfred DeFour was among the members of that squadron! These trailblazers paved the way for many African Americans, male and female, to pursue their dream of flying in both the Navy and Air Force! Today, blacks still make up a very small percentage of military pilots, but at least that barrier was broken back in 1943! Pilots of colour, both military and civilian, owe a debt of gratitude to the Tuskegee Airmen! If you would like to read more about them, please see the link in my bio! ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿพโ€โœˆ๏ธ

Much respect. Because of you, myself and others who looked like us had the opportunity to serve our country freely, & with honor. I salute you sir. Rest in peace.

Wilfred DeFour fought discrimination at home. Then he fought the Nazis in Europe.
He helped America win both wars.

DeFour was one of the last of the famed Tuskegee Airmen โ€” members of all-black units that included pilots, technicians, mechanics and other support personnel who signed up for the Army Air Force to fight in WWII. He died Saturday at age 100.

We have had the immense honor of celebrating the 99th birthday of a true American hero, Tuskegee Airman Col. Charles McGee. Colonel McGee served our nation as a fighter pilot first in WWII & then continued to serve in two more wars throughout his career.
.
Col McGee of the โ€œRed Tailsโ€ joined the โ€œRed Jet Squadronโ€ today as he flew the HondaJet with Jet It. To share the cockpit with such an exceptional human who has dedicated a lifetime of service to our great nation was extremely humbling. We are proud to have the opportunity to give back and celebrate our veterans. They inspire us to be better, go further, and pursue excellence in every aspect of the Jet It experience.

Tuskegee Airman Charles McGee Celebrated his 99th birthday in the Co-Pilot's seat: Climbing to 16,000 feet over the Virginia countryside Saturday, Charles McGee looked intense but at ease. From the co-pilot's seat, he gazed at the horizon, the Potomac River to his left.

It was one day after his 99th birthday, 76 years after his first plane ride in Tuskegee, Alabama, and decades since he served as a pioneering fighter pilot in World War II, after the U.S. government long held black people lacked the mental capacity to fly airplanes.

Now, with fellow Air Force veteran Glenn Gonzales in the pilot's seat to his left, McGee put his hands on the yoke in front of him and began gently guiding the blue-and-white HondaJet through the morning sky, easing it a bit to the right, then to the left, getting a feel for the aircraft as Gonzales kept his fingers on the controls as well.

Before setting out for a day's journey that was part epic birthday celebration, part reunion with machines he used to destroy stereotypes as much as enemy aircraft, McGee looked at a family portrait sitting above the fireplace at his brick home in Bethesda, Maryland.

There was his wife and eldest daughter, who hadn't been able to join him at an air base in Kansas after he returned home - even after his wartime heroics - because housing remained segregated. And there were his two other beloved children, who have also lived their lives inspired by a man with standards and heart.

His son Ronald is a retired pilot for Continental and later United Airlines. Cont in comments...

Okay, so this plane actually has very little to do with Pearl Harbor. It was, however, used by the #TuskegeeAirmen during WWII.

The Tuskegee Airmen was an All black unit. They wound up being flyers with an damn fine recordโ€”a credit to the Army Air Corps. They earned their chances to fly, and the returns were heroism, honor, and courage. #brandsinhistory #tuskegeeairmen #WWII #redtails

74 years ago today our Uncle Orval. Raymond Rhodes was killed during a training accident near Walterboro, South Carolina. Orval was training to be a gunner in a B-24 Liberator. 12 men aboard the B-24 & Tuskegee Airmen Robert M. Johnson flying a P-47Thunderbolt.
These men gave their lives for our country. We owe them the highest honor to never forget them.

Orval was the youngest member of the Rhodes Family, he shared a birthday with his brother Ted. They were both born on September 6th. He couldnโ€™t wait to join the military just like his brotherโ€™s Melvin, Clive, Jim, Noel & Wilson.
The crew of the Liberator were stationed at Charleston Army Air Field. The Tuskegee Airmen were stationed in Walterboro would fly above the bombers, dive down as though they were attacking and then pull up on the other side. The crewmen in the bombers were shooting the P-47s with cameras for training footage. The Tuskegee instructor would make the first pass, then a student, and then another instructor, and so on.

The P-47s had made multiple passes when Flight Officer Robert M. Johnson, a Tuskegee Airman from Pittsburgh, made his dive. Just as he did, one of the bombers broke formation and dipped down. Both planes collided & fell to earth. There were no survivors.
One of the pilots on the B-24 showed up after a night of partying & was still intoxicated. He was told to board the plane. After the accident one of the pilots father protested the use of the Tuskegee Airmen.
Robert M. Johnson became the youngest pilot commissioned in the Tuskegee Pilot Training program. In 2016 his brother Albert Johnson received the Congressional Medal of Honor on his behalf.#tuskegeeairmen #tuskegeeheirs #ww2memes #ww2pictures #ww2history #ww2aircraft #b24liberator #p47thunderbolt #p47 #p47thunderbolts #p47thunderbolt
