Splinting is a great tool I can use as a PA to assist with patient care. Splints are typically placed on temporarily until an Orthopedic consult/appointment can be made to either cast or fix what is injured. They are a device that non-circumferentially immobilizes a joint/extremity but still need to be kept dry. The benefit is the split allows for soft tissue swelling during an acute phase of injury. My professors used:
1. 3” X2 rolls w/ fiberglass lower leg sugar tong + posterior splint which is indicated for ankle/malleolar fractures or tendinitis/rupture of Achilles. The foot must be a 90*. 2. 2” X1 roll w/ fiberglass this is called an “ulnar gutter” most commonly for a “Boxer’s fracture” remember: forearm is neutral, wrist 20* extension, fingers slight flexion.

As the day plays out from waking to going back to bed we gather little bits of stress that can sometimes mount up and cause bigger stressful situations. The days can be hard on us, on our physical bodies and our minds and often things happen that weigh us down and test us to our limits. It can help to visualise letting go of these things. For example, taking a shower at the end of the working day and imagining the water washing all the negativity down the drain. Or perhaps writing it all down, lighting a fire and watching the bad stuff from your day burn. However you choose to release yourself from the cares of your day is up to you but it is important not to go to sleep with negative thoughts churning around in your mind. Sleep should be peaceful and uninterrupted and you should awake the next day feeling refreshed and ready to do battle once more. When you finish work today, go home, spend time with your loved ones, enjoy a good meal then take a shower. Stand and feel the water as it rinses the day from you and then step out with a more positive mindset. Nourishing your mind is as crucial as nourishing your body and when both are in alignment with each other, fresh perspectives are very easy to find.
