May 2005 - Anyway the Wind Blows: Cape Point is often mistaken as the furthest point South on the African continent. In fact, Cape Agulhas, about 150km east, is the southern most point - bend your geography around that. It forms part of the Table Mountain National Park. Situated at the end of an awe-inspiring drive along the Peninsula, the trip alone is worth it, even if you don't step out of the car when you get there! The road is wedged between the ocean and mile upon mile of rugged mountains.
Cape Point boasts two lighthouses one built above the other. The first lighthouse was built in 1857. However, due to its high positions (238 meters above sea level) the lighthouse was often obscured by fog or cloud. Yet it would still take a couple of shipwrecks to get them to build the new one in 1913, one much closer to sea level. Now the ships sail happily ever after... sometimes! The lighthouse at Cape Point is the most powerful on the South African coast having a range of 63 kilometers, and beams out a group of three flashes of 10 million candlepower each, every 30 seconds.

LAR GIBBON walking in @saasa_monkeyland
Primates are the closest species to homosapiens. As well as swinging through the branches and across Monkeyland’s suspension bridge, you’ll also spot the Lar Gibbons walking along the forest floor, and even on the roof of the Monkeyland Reception and Cafe! The way they walk is remarkable to watch, especially because it’s a little reminder that nature is not so far away from us.
Research also suggests they use the same vocal structure as humans and are able to control their vocal cords to produce their calls, which are acoustically different to other primates. Their vocal technique has been found to be similar to that only mastered by professional opera singers which enables them to put more power behind the higher notes than lower ones. This suggests human speech is not so unique!
