Yesterday our students left for their @NOLS_southwest expedition! We can’t wait to hear about their journey when they return. How beautiful is this photo by our student @emaze___?
Good morning from @nols_southwest we’re gonna be heading out for 8 days with no phones so see you later
Dungchen, the wailing Tibetan long horn. .
The dung-chen is an end-blown lip-reed aerophone of the natural type originating in Tibet, which is now the region occupied by China known as the Autonomous Region of Tibet. Today it is also found in the bordering areas of India, Nepal and Bhutan where Tibetan refugees settled in numbers following the Chinese occupation of Tibet in 1959. As a ritual instrument it’s used primarily in Tibetan Buddhist monastic communities to accompany the chanting of religious texts. Made of three or four telescoping sections, these trumpets play only two or three notes but tonal variety is achieved in subtle ways--by wavering the pitch, fluctuating volume and intensity and by different ways of attaching and releasing the note.
Boats on the beach. It's the best feeling in the world to sit down on the beach, listen to the sound of the sea and watch the waves. 🌊🚢 ⬇🔽️ Answer in a comment: When was the last time you went to the beach? 🔽⬇
Spending time in the villages, getting to know the local people is one of my favorite things to do when I travel. The people are always so welcoming! Today we are chartering a small plane into the highland village of Simbai for the special Kalam Festival. Little did they know they are actually celebrating on my birthday! 🎁 Turning 26 has never felt better!
Rocks and castles - what could stand for a better view?
🔸Of course, somewhere in Germany or in the south of France you can find even more impressive castles than in the Czech Republic, but don't you underestimate this country! The density of castles per square kilometer here is one of the highest in Europe! 😁 So, if you love this stuff - this is just the place!
