This work is related to the Sesserae story, but it is a new image and idea created by the artist. This is the first time Dennis has depicted a Dance Mask that he has designed. It represents the form of a dog and dugong and relates to that part of the Sesserae story where Sesserae jumps on the heads of the attacking enemies, and passages where the dogs morph into human spies. The dogs had seen the dugong meat and it became the main cause of the dispute among the people who could smell the meat cooking. The Zaum sorcerers had invented the dogs, and put humans inside, as a kind of mask. Dennis selected them as the main characters in the story and as the major incident. Dennis has said in relationship to this work that “It is most important in our time not only to rely on the old stories, but use this time to invent new things for our generation and the next ones. We need to invent new objects and artefacts now we have the technology and make things easier – like the big dugong carvings and sculpture – the might have taken a year to carve with old tools, and now we have the tools to interpret old ideas with new mediums and ways.” #art#australianart#australianartists#torresstrait#torresstraitart#contemporaryart#sissiarcollection
