I was reading a book recently where I learned that trauma is first physiological and THEN psychological.
Every animal on the planet has a built-in mechanism to release tension after a fight-or-flight experience. From the fish, after they have escaped a predator, to an antelope and even bears. 🦁
If you have seen animal planet, you may have wondered how animals can be so chill and relaxed after almost being eaten alive. 🤔
They will literally go back into their routines like nothing happened.
Yet us humans... Oh, we’ll carry all of it forever (unless we do our inner work). The difference, is that the animals close that emotional cycle. Fish and antelopes will literally shake or convulse for a few minutes before going back to normal. They are releasing the extra tension from their body.
However, when we don’t release it, it is stored as trauma. It is stored as unconscious responses to the environment, and energy stuck in our bodies. 🔥
Then doctors will call it anxiety and depression and medicate you to keep you even more numbed out from what you are feeling. HOwever, the ONLY way to heal trauma in a healthy way, is to face it.
To release the stuck energy.
To close the emotional circle.
What does this look like?
It may be grieving that loss.
It may be crying over that failed relationship
It may be allowing yourself to feel the sadness and pain of that injustice.
Perhaps, even let the rage run through at how unfair that was.
To feel it all.
To let that energy that never moved, move. To let it talk to us and teach us.
And once we’re done, to let it go. 🙏🏻
To shake hands and make peace with it. Understanding that the past is past, and we don’t have to carry it with(in) us. 🖤
We can positive-think our way through things and try and bypass them, but that’s like having a leak in your home, closing your eyes and saying to yourself “there’s no leak, there’s no leak, there’s no leak!”
Good luck with that!
To feel it all is not easy, is not comfortable. But the rewards of living with a clear, open heart, free of baggage, are too much not to try. -
PS: I’m in Ukraine, so if you have been and have any recommendations, DM me 🤗
It's always a little nerve wracking to offer up a piece of your bare skin as a canvas, but Ocean made me feel comfortable from the beginning.
Being tattooed is a very personal event for me. To share in the changing of your body with another person is deeply connective (to me, anyway. But everyone is different). Of the 12 (ooops, sorry, now 13!!) tattoos that I have, I can remember who was with me for each one (as well as which ones I got alone). For me it was very important to get this one by myself.
The lion: clearly a symbol of strength. I will never forget what was said to me once by a friend, "A lion always recognizes another lion."
Strength sees strength. For every awful situation life has challenged me with...
For every valley I've walked through, for every time I have been alone...for every time I've had to be a lion. To be strong for me.
The moon: I've always had a love affair with the moon. Being an artist at heart, the moon is the light that fuels me. It has seen me cry and it has taken my breath away. I've bled poetry in front of it's light for hours and I've been mesmerized by it's glow. It knows my secrets. 🦁🌙
Very often, it's your artist that can make or break your tattoo. Ocean was communicative with me from the start. I let him know that I was looking to cover a scar on my leg that I was embarrassed by and told him my ideas. Even though he speaks very little English, our back and forth on Instagram made me feel like he knew exactly what kind of piece I was wanting. Upon getting to the shop, l learned that he speaks virtually no English and calls his wife to be the translator between him and clients. After some chatting, we got the idea locked down and drawn up. Once he started, I was surprised at what a gentle hand he had! Trust, I've worked with some artists that have DUG IN. This felt more like a gentle cat scratch. Although by hour 3/4 I WAS feeling the pain 🙈😧
Although this is my 13th tattoo, it is the first time a piece has been specifically designed for me. I know this is an original piece of art and I will cherish it forever. It was rough, but I wouldn't change it for anything. I could not be happier and it's mine forever!!
4 years ago, an anonymous person gifted $50 to a guy I knew so he could get the “A” tattooed (Ars Amorata Symbol).
This guy knew I wanted to learn to tattoo and decided to trust me with it. It was the first tattoo I ever did, and I was a mess of nervousness and excitement. -
It was the first step that gave me the confidence to do what I loved. It meant a lot to me to see someone willing to give me their skin, knowing I had zero experience. -
Fast forward to today, I’m on tour tattooing through Europe. Currently in Bucharest, Romania I decided to gift a friend here this Ganesha tattoo, including the “A” as well. -
Through the tattoo session, we talked about my first tattoo, and I found out that it was this guy who had gifted the $50 in the past. -🙏🏻
We were both in awe at the ripple effects that this bit of generosity had over time. For him it was $50 bucks. For me it changed my life, it was the stepping stone to get started down this path, and now it was coming full circle. - 🔥
Life has mysterious ways of unfolding, and I am reminded once more that a little generosity can go a LONG way.
We never know the extent of the impact that we may have on others. What a beautiful realization! -
Thank you! 🖤I love you brother @pandapirate_a
Edgar got to work on some skin today, courtesy of @vegas.ink. Cute piece to celebrate Pride month. #edgarinklivingcolor Good job Edgar, keep at it (swipe left for final piece)
Edgar has been working away on developing himself as a #tattooist @inklivingcolor. Now that we have completed the Toronto tattoo show. We will be looking for 5 individuals through the week to be tattooed by Edgar which will allow his growth in our studio. Our team is not asking for any payment and will absorb the following shop costs in return for your skin 😁 to help our apprentice get to the next level. #edgarinklivingcolor (legs and arms only)
Being tattooed by an apprentice, and being transparent as a shop we are clarifying he is still in the learning stages which means he may not necessarily be "light" handed while tattooing you and may not possibly have the cleanest lines as of yet. With this being said, we believe in Edgar 100% and his abilities which is why he will be tattoing on human skin over seen by our seniored artists this upcoming week 😊
John will be offering some promotional rates on some of his #flash . 1st page = $50 approximately 1.5inch x 1.5inch 2nd-4th page approximately 2.5-3 x 2" for $100. .#johninklivingcolor
