Heathen- Breaking the Silence (1987) When people talk about Bay Area thrash they often leave Heathen out of the discussion. And I think that has to do with their small discography as they only released three full length albums over a 24-year period. Many thrash fans may know Heathen as the band that Lee Altus was in prior to joining Exodus, but Heathen really should be recognized for their music and talent. Breaking the Silence features super heavy yet melodic riffing, courtesy of Altus and Doug Piercy- great vocals from David White (aka David Godfrey), and solid drumming from Carl Sacco. This album, their debut, is good start to finish and includes a great cover of Sweet's "Set Me Free". Standouts include "Goblin's Blade", "Death By Hanging" and the title track. The overall sound is characteristic of late 80s production with regard to the vocal and drum sound, but the guitars really jump out at you courtesy of producer Ronnie Montrose - yeah Ronnie was producing thrash in '87!! And why can't we go back to a time when an album could kick off with a solo? Not an intro, a fucking solo!! A must have for fans of 80s Bay Area Thrash. #heathenband#bayareathrash#80sthrash#thrashmetal#heavymetal#headbanger#leealtus#ronniemontrose#testamentband#metallica#exodusband#deathbyhanging#dougpiercy#thrashalbums#bestthrashalbums1987#nowplaying#albumoftheday
