Tweaking the story with the lovely Laura Goodwin @loz.189 (thought I'd use this nice pic from Jackies Hens 😊) Laura shared the same office as me when we taught together - Me a teacher of Business and Enterprise and Laura a wonderful English teacher.
After creating my first draft I sent it off eagerly to a children's publisher in the UK and waited patiently for about 8 weeks.
I received a polite rejection stating in not so many words that the story wasn't really their cup of tea! So I emailed back and asked for tips and was amazed with a detailed response.
The story then remained on my laptop for 18 months until I decided to ask/bribe Laura to come over one evening for dinner and wine to read the story and help me tweak it - it just sounded clunky in parts. By the end of the evening the story was refined and I felt very happy as it felt complete.
It was so good to read through together and come up with tweaks and amends. Laura, in my opinion has an outstanding understanding of language and I found it easy to come up with changes working with Laura.
So my next tip is get an English teacher or someone with a better working knowledge of the English Language and conventions to read through and listen to and take on board their suggestions.
Choose someone you can trust and make it fun.
This could be your children's school teacher, a friend or friend/colleague. Alternatively, I have read about websites where you can send your story (proper term = manuscript) and they will give you genuine feedback for a small fee -don't know what these are like as didn't use so I cannot rate them

Den tid på året - THANKSGIVING på Bryggen for 4. år i træk 👍🏻
Stuffed Turkey, meatpie, mashed potatoes, gravy, cornbread, brusselsprouts, cranberry sauce & sweet potato casserole 😊🇺🇸 #thankslaura#masterchef#tradition#family ♥️
I did it. I stopped using the excuse that I don't have a tripod or good lighting (because seriously, it has been so cloudy and dreary lately!) and I just manned (womanned?) up and lettered with one hand while shooting the video with the other 😂 here's my lettered-in-one-shot version of "cider donuts." Rules on these pieces are that I have to post my first attempt at the phrase, no practicing! Just the way @laurabolter does it 😜 I will confess to being warmed up on the iPad. I didn't just sit down and write!
The cider donuts part doesn't need any explanation, right? Easily the best part of fall. But here's the only thing- do you prefer granulated or powdered sugar? I have very strong opinions.
#motivationmonday ?? Some days are harder to motivate yourself to get up and DO something.. What do you do?? CALL YA FRIEND!! Isn’t that what they’re there for?? To be brutally honest and tell you to snap out of it.. Haha!! Saturday was not one of those days.. But it was a learning experience for me.. I MADE MY FIRST BOWL!! I’ve been bugging and bugging Laura to teach me how to change the mandrel and chuck on the lathe.. It was really a scheduling issue, so we set a date.. And voila!! My first bowl!! Today I am motivated to make more.. Hopefully soon I will make my next bowl all by myself.. 😬
Thank you @lauwoodcrafts for the patience and teaching me the ways of the lathe.. .
I will post more pics when I put the finish on it.. ♥️
