“A lot of the thread I’ve been using was donated to me. One of my fiber fairy godmothers gave me boxes full of the most beautiful threads in muted palettes and that’s definitely directed me with colors I choose to use. I’m so happy there were a lot of cotton threads because I’ve really fallen in love with working with that fiber.” -Christine Hernandez @lil.weavy #santafefound
New fabric! Details ⏬⏬
☁️Cloudy grey marble is for linings and pockets
🎆The dark burnt orange has the most interesting texture
🎍I can see the thinner green as a drawstring bag or large hippie style purse
🌚I've been looking for something like that dark grey forever! I bought a tiny remanant of it a while ago and used it immediately and it is perfect. I'm so happy I found some by the yard!
Some pics of my Daily piece in the last leg of its construction, pinned to the wall with blutack to get a sense of its whole.
The third is a sneaky pic of its final hanging in the Backspace gallery at Ballarat, pre-exhi opening.
When I created this piece I had a very definite idea of how I wanted it exhibited. I deliberately wanted to create a sense of intrigue & curiosity by having the viewer first see the backside "weaving" of the newspaper, together with its suspension from the ceiling, away from the wall. I wanted the viewer to slowly come to realise it's a newspaper, that some crazy artist has completely covered with thread. On touching it, I imagined the viewer to be still unsure for it feels like woven cloth, yet its constructed from paper?! And then there's another blanket of newspaper behind with bits of thread hanging from it. What the?!#.
In the last hour of sitting @budacastlemaine where my piece has been on show again recently, I had the fortune of a visitor sharing her thoughts with me when she realised who the artist was 😂.. "At first all I could see was a gigantic tea towel, then I looked behind & I was struck by how much deeper this piece was all about".
I was chatting to someone during the week about how much it means to have people engage with & "get" the work you create, especially when you've been feeling unsure whether it will truely communicate what you hope it will. The feeling I had when this lovely lady shared her thoughts about my piece was what I imagine an endorphin rush feels like.
Indeed at times making this piece felt like running a marathon. But the heart gripping feeling on hearing those lady's words made it all worth it. To me that has been the success - in having people really get what this is all about. Thank-you Pam Trethowan! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Some possible color combinations for some small sculptures... plus I need to make another larger white sculpture to go with that curly deep pink yarn... I love it and want to use it on a few pieces. Maybe a black sculpture!
All fiber pictured here is created by @jennyct13 😊
You haven’t heard much from me this summer because it’s been close to a thousand degrees in my studio, making it quite difficult to sew without fainting. 🔥
Today, on a day trip out to one of our favorite antique shops, I scored this awesome fabric haul including a crazy woven vinyl, a linen fabric with elephants, plus a few other nifty finds! 😍
Can’t wait to get back in the studio once the heat breaks! 👊
