WEEKLY TOWN CHECK-IN:
McGregor, Western Cape, South Africa
So much to offer in this quiet little town. Scenery, hiking, nature, fauna and flora, excellent food and accommodation and even some annual events.
The Breede Centre, McGregor -True to its slogan, “Skills for Life”, The Breede Centre strives to empower unemployed people in the local area with entrepreneurial skills.
Current training includes woodwork, computer skills and needle work, while plans are in place to add gardening, cooking, hairdressing, and other practical courses to the subject list.
Pieter Halloway started The Breede Centre after teaching in the local schools for a number of years. This experience made him very familiar with the pressures facing youth in the area. High levels of unemployment lead some youth to drug and alcohol abuse, so Pieter is striving to alleviate this by passing on his skills in maths, woodwork, accounting, and building (among others). Fundamental to his approach is ensuring that people are supported to believe in themselves.
Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary, McGergor -
This is surely the best retirement home a donkey could ever wish for! The Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary on the outskirts of McGregor is currently home to 19 of these gentle creatures (as of our last visit), each with a different story.
We immediately fell in love with the curiosity and nuzzling of the donkeys who approached us. Others were less inquisitive, which was simply explained by the caretakers as being consistent with “good days” and “bad days” in the life of a donkey.
The Donkey Sanctuary not only gives a safe, permanent home to rescued donkeys, but also conducts outreach activities with donkey owners, veterinary support, practitioner workshops, and an education project for school children that has produced resource packs in both English and Afrikaans.
What a treat for The EXPEDITION Project team to experience the peace and tranquility of Temenos...

❤️Exactly a year ago we stumbled upon a magical place called Temenos in McGregor, Cape Town...💚 - with @kimyogateacher .
Tucked away in the dry and dusty town we discovered lush gardens, peacocks, mysterious pathways leading to small temples - accommodating all religions and spiritual paths. 💛 Angels, Buddha’s, a medicine wheel, a healing well, feathers, Ganesha and Lakshmi, a pond with ducks and geese, rooms for prayer and meditation, books of Rumi, gorgeous cottages for a silent retreat and great coffee! 🕉☯️💟 It was truly magical! 💜
I have just spent 3 days on a retreat in McGregor! I was extremely lucky to get to see one of their peacocks in full flirt mode .... and I think he was flirting with me!! #temenosretreat#mcgregor#peacock#nofilter
