Today was the first road race of the season, it was Cantua Creek Road race, 70 miles long. I had my teammate Cam out there to work with. It was an out and back course, we were doing three laps. The whistle blew and we were off, multiple breaks tried to form on the first lap but nothing stuck. At the start of the second lap a solo rider went off the front and he stayed away for a lap and a half. We eventually all came together to form a pace line and eventually caught the solo rider. Seconds after we caught him me and two other guys went off the front. Our break stuck for just over half a lap we then got caught by five riders. The field was still far behind us, the eight of us worked hard until the far end of the course. We made the turn around and drilled it back toward the finish. When we got to the finishing hill we slowed our pace significantly, it was a cat and mouse game up the entire hill. One guy attacked at 1 km to go...wayy to early, then another attack at 500m..still too early, then a final attack at 200m I was able to sprint past a few people and come away with 5th. Over all it was a great race, super ready for what this season has in store! Cherry pie is next🤘🏻
Folsom crit, first race of the season. The day started like a normal race day but with extra butterflies. We had a combined field with elite 3/4 and 35+ 34, we had ~100 starters. Me and my teammates Cam and Taylor had good starting positions on the line and we were already marking some stiff competition. 3,2,1 go! We were off, to a somewhat slow start given so many riders. Cam and I realized quickly we needed to run the race, meaning control the field by staying on the front, controlling the speed, and chasing anything that tries to get away. Being a 40 minute race it was time to settle in and start sharing pulls with Cam. Our other teammate Taylor was keeping an eye on people a few wheels back. Our plan worked flawlessly until 5 to go. People started attacking at every chance they got. It was taking a toll on both Cam and I. Both of us recovered relatively quickly and boom the goes a STRONG little Jr kid. I chased as hard as I could to catch him, eventually we got him. Lap card said 2 to go buy what I didn’t hear is the announcer saying last lap last lap. Going through the first corner I got boxed in behind the kid who had just attacked. He was cooked! Once we got through the corner I got to the outside of the field and started making my way to the front back up to Cam. Last corner everyone goes for it, I thought we still had at least one lap....nope! I missed the train.. I sprinted hard seeing the lap cards saying 1 to go and turned the first corner to see everyone sitting up. The race was over, not how I wanted it to go for the work I put in with Cam but hey that’s racing. Cam got 4th, our other teammate 8th and I ended up 21st. Overall I’m happy with how I performed, and it’s got me very excited for the rest of the season!
