My holy grail of vintage eyeglass frames: the FDR. Made by SRO or Tart Arnel in the 1950s. Not hard to find just hard to afford. I might drop 2 bills but not 5 for a pair. Size 45-48mm if anyone has one for sale in good usable condition. (I have over 22 pairs of vintage frames so a trade is possible)
Cary Grant as Roger Thornhill. North by Northwest 1959: Dir. Alfred Hitchcock.
Often voted as the best suit in film history, there is a lot of history and articles about it. As the style icon that he became, it has been said that Grant had it written into his contracts that he keeps all his suits after film production. Various reports contradict who tailored the suit, from Norton & Sons in London, Arther Lyons at Kilgour, French & Stanbury in Saville Row, London, to Quintino in Bevery Hills. The argument could be due to the fact that apparently over 15 suits wear made for the film because of the rigorous action in the film, but only 6 suits were used. Arthur Lyons was the Duke of Windsor’s tailor, and some sources say that Grant didn’t want to ruin the Saville Row suits so used the Quintano suits in the action scenes. In any case this stylish medium grey Glen check ventless three button suit, worn with a white shirt and grey silk tie is a classic and can be easily replicated in today’s modern age. The sunglasses are tortoiseshell with green lenses, but the maker has never been confirmed, Tart Arnel’s 55 are very similar but have been denied. Complete the look with brown leather derby shoes with grey socks and silver cuff links, but you will probably never be Cary Grant! The suit went on to influence costume design in many films such as Tom Cruise’s character in Collateral or similar suits on Don Draper in MadMen.
The film may be a tale of mistaken identity, but there is no mistaking the style of Grant’s suit and the influence it has on the grey suit. Always an argument between Connery in Goldfinger and Grant in North by Northwest. Your vote? Grant was known as an afficiando of suits right down to the detail of trouser cuffs or not. As Martin Landau as one of the henchman says in the film “He’s a well tailored one, isn’t he?”
