Have you ever wondered what your spirit animal is? This piece in the current issue of @bestselfmedia by @sarahseidelmann is SOOOOO good!
You are definitely going to want to check this one out LINK IN BIO): https://bestselfmedia.com/embracing-your-spirit-animal/
Sarah shares her own journey, great beastie wisdom and helps you connect to your own spirit animals. I wanted to share a quick personal story about the bear.
Last night I had several dreams about bears. Bears have been in my garbage lately and I feel them all around. Normally, when I go on my morning walks, I don't take my phone. This morning I told my friend I was bringing it because I felt like we were going to see one. 1/2 way into our walk a car pulled up to us and said, "Pay attention, there is a large bear up about 20 yards that just crossed the street."
When I got home, I looked up 'bear' in Sarah's book, The Book of Beasties: Your A to Z Guide to the Illuminating Wisdom of Spirit Animals. This is some of what it said:
“A mother bear is an also an expert at teaching her little ones the skills they’ll need to be wholly independent. Once they’ve been raised, she chases those prepared cubs up a tree and leaves them there, fully expecting that they will take responsibility for themselves now. Is it time for you to take full responsibility for yourself? Conversely, is it time for you to let go of something (or someone) you helped create, trusting that you have prepared it well? Bear’s presence can also help you dream a new dream. Bear reminds you that what you really want isn’t that far off (even if it feels that way now). Don’t forget to stop for honey on your way there."
“If that's not a message for a Mama Bear who has just dropped her cub off at college — and is embarking upon her own new chapter, I don't know what is! Like I said, this piece and this book are SOOOO good!
I suck at jumping off cliffs, but it's fun to me, so I do it.
The best part about freedom is this:
I can do what I want, when I want. I don't have to abide by anyone's rules (but I choose to try my best to abide by their feelings). I can choose what I allow to affect me, or in what way something affects me.
I can feel how I do and will, without worry or apology.
I can wholly, happily, and unapologetically, be my true true self.
A flip switched.
Maybe I was at my lowest so I had nowhere else to go but up.
But I used to be the insecure little high school girl who cared so much about not getting invited to the popular girls parties, or getting 11 rejects to prom (yeah, 11). Or who loved self deprivation and exhaustion.
That's not me anymore, and somehow it never was.
Now I like tomatoes, and horseradish. And now I drink my coffee black.
I cut my hair and dyed it dark.
I move slow, to take it all in, and don't really let anything rush me.
I can look at the Wild side of life (yeah, that's part of the bright side). Most importantly, I can step into the moment and out of my mind, or meditate in the center of public, or take a deep breath with a smile, or say something like "Man, it's so weird that we have legs," and I can really not give a darn whether you others think that's "fake" or "obnoxious" or "stupid." I can jump terribly off cliffs and flail in confusion in the air and be perfectly okay about not doing a gainer or a flip or a spin. Because I'm not here to impress you anymore.
It's really liberating. I'm glad the switch flipped. Black coffee has done be good. Well, it’s time to say farewell to these travel vessels of choice. These shoes have nearly traversed the entire state I now call home (1655 Miles) and have miraculously not injured me. It is time for new beginnings in Oregon and I look forward to not feeling every rock and pebble I trod on. Thank you La Sportiva!!!
