Five months before the world record attempt, Sandra Rutz-Milicevic got diagnosed with breast cancer, on her 44th birthday. After 5 years of struggle, surgeries and many chemo and radiation therapies, she decided to achieve her childhood dream - to become the first woman to swim the distance in the open sea between Split and the island of Vis in Croatia.
And here she is - on Saturday morning at 05 am, on her way to make her dream come true. Our crew was by her side during her 5.5 hour-long struggle. And she finally did it! There are no words to describe how truly proud we are.

[ALL SMILES] Happy to finish #2xuislandchallenge once again. This is truly one of the nicest and friendliest races. Also a nice clash with nature as the first leg included both wild bore and European bison galloping alongside. We started out a bit too ambitious in the heat but managed to keep a nice pace throughout the race both in the water and thru the rough terrain. Our main accomplishment was the flat running where we prior to the race agreed on a pace which we delivered on despite the heat 👏🏼 @melkerc 🔥 #solid#decodinghappiness#swim#swimrun#swimmer#runner#run#sweden#karlshamn#eriksbergviltochnatur
I will always consider myself to be a swimmer - it’s just a part of who I am; however, my feelings towards the sport have changed a ton in the past year...
Swimming used to feel like a part time job when I competed in college. I liked it of course, but I always felt like I HAD to do it. If I wasn’t swimming every single day, I felt like I no longer fit the “athlete” mold. So I forced myself to swim each morning even after I had graduated last summer. I really wanted to switch up my routine and include other activities, but I feared the loss of that title, “athlete”.
These days I swim for about 45 minutes, one time a week, with a 3000 yard goal. That’s a FRACTION of what I used to do BUT I do it now because I WANT to. I truly love the sport and the skill and I love incorporating it into my routine.
Don’t get stuck thinking you have to focus on one specific activity- find what you really enjoy! Whether it’s swimming, running, CrossFit, lifting, biking, etc. it’s something that will make you healthier AND happier! Be grateful for the body you have and everything it’s capable of! Try new things - set goals - have fun.
