We don't know the exact cause of over training because the results of the science are not always consistent and there are probably a number of things going on at the same time. No matter what, over training involves more breaking down of muscles and mitochondria than building them up (pic 1). Here are the leading theories behind overtraining.
Chronic Glycogen Depletion: Glycogen is stored sugar in your muscles cells that fuel your muscles during workout. The muscles like using Glycogen...but if your fuel tank is empty all the time, then your muscles have to rely on something else, like protein, to get it's fuel. Protein is not stored as a fuel like sugar and fat, so it comes from the muscle structure itself (pic 1 again). .
Chronic Systemic Cytokine Release: Cytokinesis are the hormones that activate the immune system when you have the flu or when muscles are damaged (pic 2). They give you that flu feeling. White blood cells get the signal and start cleaning things up. If you have constant and extensive muscle damage, Cytokine signals overload and go all over the place. They prevent sugar absorption, which depletes Glycogen and makes you feel horrible (the behavior change we talked about earlier). .
Stress Hormones: Hormones like cortisol and adrenaline are designed to keep you alive in the moment and the expense of the future. They increase protein breakdown and cause all kinds of problems if they stick around too long (pic 3). .
Reactive Oxygen Radical: Normally, about 5% of the oxygen you breathe doesn't combust just right in the mitochondria and creates a reactive molecule that damages nearby structures and DNA (pic 4). Scavengers normally clean these up, but during intense training the scavengers can't keep up and things get damaged. .
Likely...all of these happen and play a part in overtraining. There are a lot more details to this and you should read the full chapter here:

Our first REACH parent class is going great! From fear to streamline in just three lessons and already doing a great streamline Our unique way of teaching has been created by our Founder and Executive Director (seen leading the class in the vide) through his own experiences learning to swim as an adult and with his mentor Judy Hewitt. Florencio has helped hundreds of adults navigate through their fears and learn to swim over his 23 years in swimming Florencio and the REACH team has been been wanting to do a REACH Parent class since starting REACH three years ago and finally we were able to start it this fall. Now our parents can enjoy water parks and water adventures along side their children. We are so proud of our parents #adultswimlessons#overcomingfears#facingfears#bucketlist#swimlessons#thebronx#nyc#teamREACH#nevergiveup#latinoentrepreneur
The Importance Of Swimming Skills For Safety, Health and Enjoyment.
💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦💦 On a lighter side, swimming has a lot of benefits in itself:
The health benefits of swimming are numerous. It trains the cardiovascular system, is a low-impact exercise and a great whole body workout.
There are also several psychological benefits of swimming.A swim session at the pool relaxes the mind, uplifts the spirit and is also often an occasion to have social contacts.
Besides this, swimming is also a recreational activity to have with friends and when it’s hot outside.
Being able to swim opens up a lot of recreational possibilities that wouldn’t be safe to practice otherwise: surfing, kayaking, boat fishing, …
Other Uses of Swimming Skills
There are other cases where it is important to know how to swim:
In primitive cultures it allows people to cross bodies of water. It is a prerequisite for several jobs: lifeguards, fishers, professional divers, …It is a prerequisite if you want to follow in the footsteps of professional swimmers like Michael Phelps, Ian Thorpe, or Jenny Thompson.
