Why do I care about sustainability? 🌿
For my kids and future generations to come. So that they can experience all the beauty that we get to do today. For everyone's right to a fair wage and good working conditions, for nature and wildlife above and under water. For a life in freedom, peace, equality and justice for all.
Why do you care?
Clove Tree Hill is a melding of two cultures that you don't find anywhere else on the island. It's a venture between our manager Dian who is the traditional land owner, and her business partner Eileen 💕.
Together Dian and Eileen developed the vision for an eco luxe retreat to provide both an opportunity for guests to connect with the traditional heart of Bali while developing sustainable economic opportunities for local people 🌿.
We invite guests looking for a deeper spiritual connection to the land and the people to join us here at Clove Tree Hill to experience authentic Bali in our hidden piece of paradise, far from the busy tourist crowds.
Welcome to our home 🙏🏽🌺🌿
Now where in the world would you get this! 🙂
Plains Pride turned up for their sundown drink too at the camp waterhole🦁
You never know what you will experience on a African Safari.

Beauty and elegance can be made from the most unexpected sources. We know that full well. Most furniture you will find in our resort are made from discarded wood. With the right vision, dedication to environmental responsibility and (of course) the most skillful artisans, we were able to bring elegance and beauty to what was deemed the opposite.
What do you say, did we pull it off?

📍 Reserva biológica Dúrika 🇨🇷 🐐 Dúrika has around 40 goats. Part of my activities as a volunteer was waking up early to get milk out of these nice ladies, and take them to the surrounding areas so they could eat some grass 🌱 🌳Dúrika started (in the 90's) as a reforestation and conservation project. The community also started as an experience of finding a better lifestyle, in respect with each other, with the animals and with the nature. 🌳🐅 Due to conservation of forest and wildlife, cows or horses couldn't exist in Dúrika's community. These animals need flat ground and require deforesting. 🧀🥛 Every lactose product and cheese was made from goat's milk. The diet is also completely vegetarian.

📍 Reserva biológica Dúrika 🇨🇷 🍌 This is the ecological banana plantation of the most sustainable place I visited in Costa Rica : Dúrika 🌱 This auto-sufficient community produces most of what is eaten : fruits, veggies, coffee, goat milk and cheese, eggs. 🍴Everyday, I would eat the most diverse and delicious vegetarian meals. 🐐🥦☕🧀❤️ 👨👩👧👦👩👩👦 Everyone there is so nice and made me feel at home, participating at their meals and activities.
Recently a person tied to the tourism industry referred to protecting coral reefs as "bullshit." It's pretty sad to see companies when that receive so many benefits from these ecosystems, including the creation of beaches, storm protection, and recreational activities, don't realize that their business depends on them. We still have a lot of work to do..... #sustainabledevelopment#sustainabletourism#coralreef#oceans#tourism#puntacana
@Regran_ed from @earthpacking - Part 2 Pulau Menjangan .

🚙Let's talk cars🚙
Wow we had such an overwhelming response about our post on public transportation yesterday! So many of you shared your stories of using public transport, or struggles to use it in the U.S. Many of you expressed that you were impressed with us for being car free in the land of automobiles🇺🇲 TBH that all started to make me uncomfortable because even though we always use and prefer public transport when it's available, sometimes it's not. We don't own a car, but that doesn't mean we don't occasionally use them. 🚘
When we were house sitting in the Caribbean last month, the home owners provided us their car to use. Public transport was pretty much non-existent on the island and biking was not safe for a variety of reasons. It was also a necessity as part of our pet sitting duties. If something had happened to one of their 17 animals, we would have needed to drive them to a vet.🐕 We've also rented cars on road trips with friends. Did you know that a car full of 4+ people is actually more efficient than one person taking a train? 🚆
Point being: we are about practicality. We are about minimizing our car usage as much as is practically possible - just like out attitude towards zero waste. 🌿
We know most people in the U.S. probably own a car or use car sharing services frequently. And we aren't trying to call anyone out, shame, or blame. 🚖
What you can do is consider making shifts to reduce your car usage: . 🚙Two car house hold? Can you make it work with just one? You'll save tons of money to boot! 🚙Can you ride share with anyone at work?
. 🚙Combine public transport with using your car?
. 🚙Join a bike share program instead of using ride share apps?
. 🚙 Consider forgoing a rental car on vacation?
Anyone have any other tips for reducing your car use?

Here I was 1500+ feet above sea level on Cadillac Mountain, the tallest mountain on the Eastern Seaboard and all I could think about is the immense beauty that is our planet. In between the misty morning and the soft, yet, wavering clouds, the world has never looked bigger.
Everyone around me, myself included, was taking pictures, taking selfies, and posting it over social media. But, there was this older man in front of me who sat on a rock near the very tip of the mountain, just staring out in the abyss that caught my attention. I wondered what he was thinking; he had no cell phone or selfie sticks, only his eyes, taking it all in. I wondered if he was bothered by the many people that waited for his spot, the perfect place to take the most Instagram worthy picture. And then I thought to myself: life can be so different if we weren’t focused on sharing with other people what we've seen and just pay attention to what we are currently seeing.
All I heard was chattering, yet, if I stared hard enough and soaked in the view, all of the noise washed away and all I could hear was the slight gusts of wind and the sound of the ocean below. "Pay attention," I kept telling myself, "this is a once in a lifetime view." And so, after all the picture snapping, I sat there and took in the beauty of the mountains and the trees, the clouds and the fresh air, the sun rising in the distance and for a moment, was not thinking at all. I saw.

This is one of our favorite places in La Palma so far 🌴 The beaches, the mountains, the cliffs, the black sand, the banana plantations everywhere... 😍🌊⛰🍌 Let's see where the next few weeks will take us to ✌🏼😊🌍
Q: What’s your number one tip for traveling in a more responsible and ethical way?
A: Research! I think it's so so important to research all the destinations, attractions and accommodations before visiting..
I always try to ask myself "is this good for the animals?", "is this good for the local people?" and "is this the most sustainable alternative I have at this point in time?".
I think it's vital that we constantly question our intentions during our travels... No one wants to leave a destination having created more harm than good.
We begin our mondays hiking through coffee plantations in the mountains😎 Join us for a trekk with our local partner Saqueo and learn all there is to know about the amazing coffee Guatemala has to offer ☕️🍃🇬🇹
