"In 2007, I noticed a discolored mole on the backside of my left shoulder that has been immediately removed by a surgeon. The diagnosis was Melanoma with a depth of 1.5mm. I had surgery the following month.
When I met the surgeon for a follow up, he told me that if melanoma resurfaces within five years it would lodge itself into a vital organ and spread rapidly within the system. “If this happens”, he said, “you will not survive.” Starting at the end of 2010, I felt intense pain in my left arm, and was prescribed some anti-inflammatories.
A few months later I felt even worse, I could not even sleep and had to take sick leave from work. After a CT scan I was diagnosed with cancer in the lungs, the liver and possibly the bones. Then a bone scan and a biopsy showed Stage 4 Melanoma. I wanted to access a trial for new medications but I had to do at least 4 chemotherapy treatments before applying. So, in other words, I didn’t have any options. After 1 year of treatment I was in complete remission, when I had very few chances of survival. Then, in 2013, I was diagnosed with 3 brain tumors. I had a brain surgery followed by a Gamma Knife treatment. In 2014 I started Dabrafinib. I am now happy to say I am cancer free."

Melanoma represents 2% of all skin cancers, but causes 75% of skin cancer deaths 😯 Over exposure to UV light causes 95% of melanoma - so it's pretty clear that prevention is the key to avoiding it ✊
GOOD NEWS: if melanoma is identified at an early stage, simple treatment can result in a complete cure.
THIS WEEK: take 5 minutes and book an appointment to get your skin checked. Be sure to tell your mates, as it may encourage them to do the same 👍

Summer Sun Care 3☉
From the outside
The Janesce Suncare Lotion is an amazing product and would have to be one of my favourites in this beautiful skincare range.
UV is a source of free radicals that damage our skin, prematurely ageing it and causing all sorts of imperfections. However, like all free radicals they are able to be neutralised by antioxidants and this is how the Janesce Suncare Lotion works. Rich in betacarotene and vitamin C, this product saturates the upper layers of our skin with these powerful antioxidants, a process that takes 7 to 10 days. Over this time the antioxidants it contains are stored in the tiny spaces between the layers of skin cells in the outer most stratum of the skin. This stratum contains between 20 to 30 layers of cells and each layer becomes an antioxidant-filled barrier, capable of reducing the negative effects of the sun and greatly improving our skin’s ability to cope.
All this activity is cumulative and it takes 7 to 10 days for the skin to be fully prepared. Because the SPF rating used in other chemical barriers must offer immediate protection, the SPF rating system does not work for the Janesce Suncare Lotion. Instead, your skin is in a constant state of protection provided it is used daily.
Another thing I love about this product is that, it does not interfere with the natural protective mechanisms your skin already has in place to protect itself. One of these mechanisms is the production of melanin, a dark pigment that forms a tan, the Janesce Suncare Lotion won’t suppress this process because it is an important part of your natural sun resilience. The Janesce Suncare lotion also allows our skin to keep producing vitamin D.
I believe the Janesce Suncare Lotion is a ‘must have’ product all year round as it offers a completely different, non-chemical approach to sun protection that also allows the skin to carry on it’s normal functioning. If you are going to be exposed to high levels of UV radiation, by all means boost your protection by adding a chemical sun block but for most days of normal sun exposure, the Suncare Lotion is enough.

Applying our own sunscreen today!☀️
The children are encouraged to practice many self help skills throughout their daily routine such as applying their own sunscreen before going outdoors.
The educators demonstrate how to effectively apply sunscreen and the children repeat their actions.
They love exploring the texture of sunscreen in their hands and applying to any exposed skin.
This not only encourages independence, but teaches the children about health and sun safety as educators talk to the children about why we have to wear sunscreen outdoors.
😰 Did you know 2 in 3 teenagers say their friends think a tan is a good thing? 😰⠀

This is Lana. Today she helped us highlight the importance of sun protection 🧴⠀
After being exposed to plenty of UV radiation while living in the Pacific, a melanoma was discovered on her back during a routine skin check ☀️⠀
Thankfully, Lana’s melanoma was detected early and was able to be removed in June last year.⠀
There’s many people, like Lana, who will be impacted by skin cancer. We know approximately two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70 and that exposure to high UV radiation early in life doubles your risk of developing melanoma.⠀
That’s why this National Skin Cancer Action Week, we’re encouraging everyone to embrace their natural beauty and protect their skin from the sun through the theme #OwnYourTone . Tag us in your SunSmart selfies and take the time to get to know your skin this week.⠀

Friends, try this: get up extra early to start your trainings, that way you don't stay under the sun for too long (and you get to have delish breakfast immediately!!). 🙆
Studies say that UV is strongest from 10 a.m. til 3 p.m—let's try to avoid sun exposure for our trainings during these times 🙏 Also, #CoverUpButtercup and use sunblock! ——
If however, you can't avoid sun exposure during said times, I strongly suggest you check out Tri Sirena's UPF 50 triathlon apparel. Head over to www.trisirena.com and get 10% off with my code: SIRENMACEE upon checkout. ——
STAY SUN SAFE, fellow athletes! 🌞 #WeAreSirens#SunSafety#Training#TriathlonApparel#Trikit#TriathlonGear#Multisports

From the inside.
Believe it or not some of the foods you eat contain nutrients that are capable of offering photo-protective benefits to the skin.
Today we will look at some of these foods that can provide added sun protection to your skin.
Brazil nuts are nature’s richest source of selenium, an anti-oxidant mineral that has the ability to lessen the damage that UV rays have on skin. In 2009 a study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention showed that higher levels of selenium in the blood reduced the risk of skin cancer by half!
Green tea is another wonderful skin food. The polyphenols it contains reduce the skin inflammation and DNA damage caused by excessive sun exposure.
Carotenoids are a valuable group of nutrients that give fruit and vegetables their bright colours (yellow, green, red, or orange). Many studies have shown that this complex group of nutrients neutralize free radicals and significantly improve the skins ability to protect itself from the sun. Betacarotene is the most efficient nutrient in this family. It is found in orange and yellow fruits (mangoes and papayas), orange and yellow vegetables and green leafy vegetables.
Lycopene, found in tomatoes and attributed to their red color, has also been shown to greatly reduce and in some cases, prevent the formation of redness on exposure to UV. In one study, people who consumed tomato paste daily showed an average of 40% less redness and smoother skin than the control group. It is also worth noting that natural lycopene from tomatoes was found to be more effective than the synthetic version.

Today's message is to ensure you eat your vegetables and drink your green tea to boost your skin’s natural sun screening ability.
