That’s the title of next Sunday’s workshop at @triyogauk Soho. Not everyone that jumps on the handstand train is necessarily a headstander. However headstand & forearmbalance practice can very much help 🤚🏻-stands.

A quit 📝 on progress & goals:
I took my 1st acroyoga class when I was 31 & my 1st yoga class when I was 33. Like most people I took big breaks from my practice. I was very stiff when I started and still feel stiff. I do not consider myself a role model of yoga practice but if I learnt ☝🏻 thing in the last 8 years (I am now 39) is that regularity, intensity & short term goals can go a long way.

At the moment I am teaching the following open classes:

I know very little about counterbalances but I try to approach them in the same way with every acro trick:
.
(i) the centre of gravity has to stay above the base’s “strong point”
.
(ii) the strengths of ☝🏻 partner (ie. @ellie_skourogianni ’s shoulder flexibility) can support the other’s weaknesses (ie. my hamstring tightness)

• Backbends & shoulder flexibility for inversions •

While watching an Instagram live video I came across the following: “Are bridges the best way to improve shoulder flexibility to achieve the perfect handstand line”. 😱
.
Before I give my take on this let me give a quick disclaimer: I do not have the perfect handstand line neither do I claim to be an expert on bridges.
.
My answer to the question is that bridges are among the worst ways to improve shoulder joint mobility. Why?
1. Bridges involve flexibility in many body parts other than the shoulders. If the shoulders are not mobile to begin with the chances are there will be more work on the already mobile part (ie. psoas) and not the shoulders
2. Handstands require a mobile shoulder joint. Using specific exercises to improve flexibility on the lats & shoulders can bring balance between the 2 sides & address weaknesses in these 2 areas - shoulders and lats are 2 different muscles!
3. Handstands require stability in the shoulder joint. A bridge doesn’t to the same extent. 
4. Unless one is an advanced practitioner, backbending prior to handstanding with straight lines is counter productive.

Having said all the above: doing something is better than doing nothing. But for the reasons stated above I consider bridges a poor choice to improve shoulder flexibility for handstands.

This bridge was next to a water fountain on the way to Livadi beach (the main nudist beach of Donousa). I spent the entire day there last Tuesday. Donousa is by far the most nudist friendly 🌴Íslandi have visited.
