It's a busy night in the studio prepping, painting and (eventually) packaging your orders! Still can't believe how many have been placed this month! Thank you all so much!
Christmas in the Caribbean is truly special whether it relates to the food, music or festivities around the season. Today is indeed special so on the third day of Christmas DutyFree gives to you... the Nine Mornings Festival.
Today marks the beginning of the unique Nine Mornings Vincentian festival. Nine Mornings festivities is held annually, from the 16 – 24 December. In its essence, nine mornings before Christmas, visitors and locals awake in the early hours of the morning to attend and participate in a range of activities. Some of which include: sea baths, dances (or in local parlance, fetes), bicycle riding, street concerts and the final morning of the festivity usually ends with a steel band “jump-up”. It is believed that it originated around 1913 in association with the ‘novena’ of the Catholic Church, where a member of the Dominican Order of the Church initiated a tradition of celebrating a Christmas novena in the early hours of the morning. It is also believed that after the service, worshippers walked the streets while some opted to go to the beach. It was during the procession back to their houses that churchgoers did window shopping and greeted friends with holiday blessings hence the start of this wonderful festival.
