Fantastic record from Stuart A. Staples. Fantastic cover-art from Stuart A. Staples. Limited to 300 worldwide, and of course already sold out. I’m a sucker for limited editions, so I needed to get this one. What can a man do? 🤷🏼♂️
Stuart A. Staples – Arrhythmia
Stuart A. Staples - Arrythmia (SLANG50156LP, Lucky Dog / Cityslang, 2018)
Well this is a very pleasant surprise, some 10 or more years after his last solo record the Tindersticks main vocalist returns with a new LP.
I guess it will be a non-starter for those who cannot stomach his singular (in a club style) vocals or those that prefer Staples at his most conventional but if you don’t fall down at either of those hurdles then this a rewarding albeit marginally slight piece of wax.
There are flashes of previous records such as Can Our Love... and The Something Rain but as if they had been forgotten in the back of the larder and mould and decay had attacked and transformed them. Oh, and the 2nd side is a side long score to a Claire Denis short film, itself inspired by an exhibition by Staples’ partner... which he provided the music for...
I’m still mulling it over but this might be one of my favourite records of 2018.
Don’t you love when you get an album in the mail that you have no recollection of having bought and then it ends up not being at all what you expected but kind of this drawn out ambient-ish thing with bursts of noise that’s kind of reminiscent of later-era Talk Talk and it gets you thinking about how much you love music that approaches complete silence and then you wanna go back and listen to all of that type of music you’ve loved for the past 15 years or so but have kind of been ignoring lately for no reason? Man, I love that. #vinyladdict#musicnerd#stuartastaples#rainydayalbums
Day #3022 Tindersticks - Kathleen
Easily the loudest quiet band I have ever seen live! And ever since they got played on Sopranos that’s all I think when I hear this band is that scene where Tony is having a crappy day. Oddly enough. Whilst posting this shirt and watching that video I was served with an ad that says Stuart A Staples (the singer of Tindersticks) has a new solo album out today “Arrhythmia”, what a coincidence huh? Must’ve been feeling this shit on some other level 🤞🏼
That leaving feeling
I get that leaving feeling
This time it's here to stay
I've been weighing up the pulling
And pushing me away
The past is so heavy
But it's something that I can't leave
And this future's so certain
It just pushes me to my knees .... #stuartastaples#thatleavingfeeling
