On June 17, 1985, STS-51G Discovery launched.

30 years ago, today, Commander Daniel Brandenstein, Pilot John Creighton, Mission Specialists Shannon Lucid, John Fabian Steven Nagel, and Payload Specialists Patrick Baudry and Sultan Al-Saud took off for their 7 day, 1 hour, 38 minutes and 52 second mission.

STS-51G was the eighteenth flight of NASA's Space Shuttle program and the fifth for Space Shuttle Discovery. Sultan Al-Saud became the first Arabian, first Muslim and first member of a royal family to fly into space. This was also the first Space Shuttle mission that flew without at least one astronaut from the pre-Shuttle era.
