So how does this play into our everyday lives? In short, all this new information and the rapid way information is transmitted can leave us feeling vulnerable. Plus thereโ€™s an expectation that if youโ€™re not completely pain free and chill, something must be wrong with you. And this just isnโ€™t the case.

We all hurt sometimes. It goes along with life. Some days are harder than others and the stress can be more than our bodies can handle. Feeling some new sensation isnโ€™t a bad thing. Obsessing, fixating, and catastrophizing feelings and sensations that arise in our day, thatโ€™s not so good.

Our mental state deeply affects and alters how we feel. If we expect to have back pain when we wake up, expect it to nag at us and ruin our day, chances are it probably will. If you go searching for pain, youโ€™ll likely find something.

Accept that your body will hurt sometimes. Donโ€™t turn mole hills into mountains just because you saw on social media that impinged nerves or turned off muscles were a thing. And remember that sometimes taking a moment to take deep breathes and calm down really can alleviate your pain.

You gotta know how to institute proper intraabdominal pressure to create length like this.  A properly lengthened spine is one that bends and rotates from top to bottom. I have been getting a lot of questions about my education and training lately so I decided to just make a post about it.  After getting my B.S. from SDSU in kinesiology, I went onto the International Professional School of Bodywork for their Structural Integration program. The man in this picture, Ed Maupin, was a huge part of my training, along with 2 other amazing instructors. He studied directly under Dr. Ida Rolf (the creator of Rolfing/Structural Integration). So, you can imagine the amazing insight to Structural work he had as well as some cool stories about Ida. Lately people have also been oddly concerned for my future and how my body will manage to last after doing this work everyday. Well, Ed became a Rolfer in 1968 and when I was at school with him in 2016 he was still doing sessions and able to get up and down from sitting Indian style with more ease than a lot of 30 year olds I know. So, my point is if you are aware and have proper body mechanics and receive the work yourself, youโ€™ll be just fine. .

I thought I would ONLY do Structural sessions once I got out into the real world but now I do a combination of techniques. I do wish I did more full Structural sessions but working for someone else (chiropractor) I kind of have to do what their clients want. But, all of my sessions are centered around Structural Integration. Iโ€™m so grateful for the education I received from everyone at IPSB and wouldnโ€™t change the path that led me here for anything! .

This morning I was reading an article on SI and psychology and came across this gem: โ€œWe live in a three-dimensional world, subject to the force of gravity which grounds us. This force has been one of the main determinants of our physical shape during the evolution of mankind. Spatial concepts are developed as we learn to maneuver ourselves around in the real world attempting to satisfy our basic needs. These spatial ideas, reflecting a world dominated by the energy force of gravity, are used to place objects, including ourselves, in our version of the concrete world. These positions are then used to indicate emotional statesโ€(Burford 1998, 8) .

And this quote as well: โ€œThe erect living object on earth uses energy from within itself to defy the downward pull of gravity. Gravity is a little understood source of energy which shapes the whole universe . . . From the experiential point of view it is of all-pervasive importance. Iโ€™ll start above and below where youโ€™re feeling it (anatomically) to figure out WHY youโ€™re hurting there, and what other muscular imbalances are present that are causing that pain. I tell every client, itโ€™s just like putting a puzzle together, when they question why Iโ€™m working on their chest after they just told me their shoulders hurt. People look at me crazy all the time, until I figure it out and their mind is blown๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿค“

There is no greater pleasure for me then to use my brain, take it on a learning adventure down a rabbit hole and out the other side of understanding. Study has taken me around the world, allowed me to meet amazing people (that I may never have otherwise come across), itโ€™s gotten me dream jobs and opportunity beyond what I could have imagined, and most of all, I just effing love to do it.

On the other hand.. when people say โ€˜find something you love to do and do itโ€™ remember that you donโ€™t have to find something that makes you money. Although I have made money from knowing things, and indirectly through being a well rounded professional, Iโ€™ve also put in many thousands of hours of study into things with no $$ return. Happiness isnโ€™t ultimately attached to money. Nor should it be. Hustle for personal contentment with zero monetary value, doing something that nobody sees, pays you for or congratulates you for, is every bit as worthy and powerful. .

How does Structural Integration work?

Over time, and from use, connective tissue/fascia becomes thickened, tightened and toughened and can feel like knots, ropes and cement in the body (not fun ๐Ÿ‘Ž). By lengthening, opening and realigning the patterns in connective tissue/fascia this tissue/fascia becomes softer, more layered, rehydrated and more pliableโ€” thus allowing movement and flexibility (imagine the flexibility and mobility of a baby vs. an adultโ€” this is the feeling of open and layered tissue vs. cemented and bound/restricted tissue). By returning the body to its vertical and horizontal lines (โ€œstacking its blocksโ€) higher functioning and performance can be restored and increased. 
Structural Integration changes the bodyโ€™s holding patterns because it organizes and aligns the imbalances in the tissue. The systematic approach to relating gravity through the myofascial layers (the โ€œrecipeโ€/ten series) aligns the body and improves posture. The body lengthens allowing muscles the space to work and joints the freedom to function. As well as balances and aligns the entire system for higher functioning (less pain and discomfort, more ease and mobility). Each time we round our shoulders while sitting at a desk, working on a computer, texting, watching tv, driving, eating, etc.. The list goes on and on. Movement update:

Exploring vectors in space. Cultivating flow and fluidity. 
Perfecting my press to handstand, and my handstand vertical line. 
My body has changed so much the last few years as i have been receiving a lot of structural bodywork on top of other healing i have been doing. My tissues were rock hard to the touch, my spine completely immobile, pelvis so anteriorly tilted that my whole lumbar region functioned as one locked unit, quads overdeveloped and stiff, hamstrings screaming tight, glutes deactivating, hips were so tight i couldnt sit cross legged on the ground for more than a minute, my scapulas so stuck in my shoulder girdle that my arms were compensating so much length and range of motion. It was hard to tell at first glance because i have always been pretty in shape and fairly athletic, but with a closer assessment my body was locked, rigid, and full of emotions and other baggage i was holding onto.

It has been a hell of a journey to get this far, and i still have a ways to go, but am so grateful for this opportunity to explore my potential.

The first part is essentially a lunge. Keeping you hips square and finding alignment so that you can engage the deep front line from the inner foot up through the front of spine .

The second bit is engaging the core to bring the spine into flexion while lifting the pelvis away from the standing hip joint and plugging the femur of leg that is on ladder back into the socket .

What is Structural Integration?

From the Guild for Structural Integration: Structural Integration is a process of re-education of the body through movement and touch. It systematically releases patterns of stress and impaired function. The primary focus of Structural Integration is facilitating the relationship between gravity and the human body.

In my own words/observations: If you live in a body, going through a Structural Integration ten-series would serve and assist you. Over the years through use, injury, illness, trauma (physical, emotional, daily life, and minor traumas) the body shrinks, binds, and forms concrete-like connective tissue. This connective tissue, called fascia, covers the entire area of the body and can determine the amount of freedom and ease (or disease) we have in movement and body functioning. Shortened and hardened fascia causes aches and pains and loss of flexibility over time (think about the flexibility of a baby and then compare it to how you feel in your body now). It is theorized that shortness in the fascial tissue creates not only physical discomfort but also it can effect our mental and emotional wellness and awareness as well; if the body is out of alignment, the mind and emotional body can be effected.

Although Structural Integration is a process and takes time (hence the name), most people feel better after a first session, and only continue to feel better as their ten-series progressesโ€” and even in the months after a ten series. A ten-series (10, one hour sessions over time) may sound like an investment, which it isโ€” both financially and to the process. But, what if after ten sessions your body and mind had more ease? What if you felt better than you have in years? What if your life and performance in life significantly improve? What if it โ€œturns back the clockโ€ for you? The good news is, you donโ€™t have to commit to a ten series right awayโ€” you can try a first session and decide from there if you would like to continueโ€ฆthe only risk with a first session being that you may literally breathe more easily. That sounds good, right?

It can make us feel immobile and can sometimes cause pain.  This can make it difficult to roll up and extend (or bend forward and straighten up). Many cases of lower back pain include tightness in the spinal muscles.  This can cause the lumbar curvature to remain too curved or too straight.  The middle ground is best for spines but in ordinary circumstances it can be difficult to achieve without the help of manipulations of the connective tissue. 
Structural integration can release the spine and muscles around it bringing about freedom of movement and a reduction in pain levels.

Corey (placed 5 in the world in Wushu & a PT- generally just badass ๐Ÿ˜)did a few Fascial techniques on meโ€”- releasing my held pattern in the spiral line. And it overlooks a vital piece of the puzzle.

Someone recently told me that their pain was purely structural and that their psychology played no part in the matter. Had we more time, and a better setting, I wouldโ€™ve loved to sit them down and inquire more into this brainless/mindless pain. If the pain was only structural, then what was interpreting it? If it didnโ€™t involve the brain, why was he even interested in โ€œfixingโ€ it.

Perhaps BECAUSE it was registering in his head and influencing the litany of psychosocial factors that contribute to the amalgam we call experience. My guess was that his pain was challenging his social life, affecting his work, restricting his enjoyment, and playing a part in his depressive mood. Hence why he felt like he needed help.

But seeing the bigger picture on how humans work, this can only sharpen our skill set and not unintentionally perpetuate fear, pain, and immobility in our clients with our words and the manner in which we frame the causes of their pain and injury.

Keeping in theme with #mentalhealthawarenessdayโค๏ธ ... I've been reading this book "The body keeps the score".. which I know some of you have read.
 It's filled with really interesting case studies and more importantly break throughs of mental health and PTSD. It focuses on how trauma effects the body as well as the mind and can be trapped in the body for years. Some of those traumas can have such devastating effects on the sufferers as well as families who support them.

Recognising that the mind and body is so connected is such an important step to healing. Releasing some of that trauma through Rolfing can not only help fix the past patterns but also help you move forward into new patterns as you heal through that trauma.

How can I tell that Iโ€™m standing correctly on my feet? Maybe itโ€™s something You havenโ€™t even thought of. Hereโ€™s the test.

Ask yourself when you stand, do you hands rest at the top of your hips by your thighs or do they fall in the middle of your leg by your femur? The more weight you put in the forefront of your feet ( towards your toes), the more stress you put on your back, hips, psoas, calves. Almost all the major muscles in your body. =========================
Here is a great example. This young boys weight was way too far forward causing all kinds of rounding. His head is couldnโ€™t even lift upright. The picture on the left shows his body before his ten series of Rolfing sessions. The right shows him after.
