Does stretching really work? We are pondering this today following consecutive hard leg training days. The research is often conflicting but here is what we see clinically. If you are tight and need flexibility for your exercise of choice, warm your muscles up first then do some static stretching with 30 second holds. If you need power for your exercise of choice, again warm up then do some dynamic stretches. It is the warm up, not the stretch, that will help prevent injury. Post exercise static stretching helps reduce muscle soreness. Feel too inflexible to reach your toes or ankles when stretching your hammys and quads? Use a yoga strap, belt or towel to help. And if you are consistent with daily stretching, you will see length changes over time because it is actually the brain, not the muscle you are training. EASY HIP ROTATION DRILL

Over the past week I covered a few different strategies to improve your passive hip mobility. Yesterday I posted a favorite drill of mine for improving hip mobility control. If you found that one too challenging, try this one out!
.
Here we’re working on hip mobility control, which is to say if you’re doing this drill you should be confident that you have at lest symmetrical hip mobility. If you notice one leg moving less than the other, check out my passive 90-90 mobility drill.
.
When your feet are close together and you’re moving your knees apart, you’re going through external rotation.
.
When your feet are further apart and you’re moving your knees together, that’s internal rotation.
.
Both of these are crucial motions for normal walking. If your gait feels off, it may be coming from your hips! Give this a try and see how it feels.
.
Tips on form:
.
1️⃣ Get yourself close to the wall so your knees are bend around 90 degrees.
.
2️⃣ Move your knees together and apart in unison, pushing into the end ranges for 3-5 seconds.
.
3️⃣ Repeat 5-10 times per direction.

“Progressive overload” is the MAIN driver of muscle growth, meaning that every single strength training program finalized towards muscle gains, SHOULD be based on this principle. However, most people think that “Progressive Overload” means only to add weight to the bar (which mind you, it’s most of its meaning) but it’s NOT just that. -
Quite infact, each of these variables contribute to Progressive Overloading just as much as the first one.
.
✅ Bettering your technique surely helps you build a stronger base for you to progress on the very exercise, avoiding the injuries it could lead to. Plus, it definitely helps to lift more weight.
.
✅ Increasing the capacity to lift X amount of weight for MORE reps, contributes to progressive overloading aswell. More volume = more gains.
.
✅ Resting less between sets means that you’ve built more capacity on your training. You’ve adapted to it, and you’re doing better!
.
Each one of these IS Progressive Overloading, aka GAINS. Next time you’re worried about not being able to lift more weights, notice if you’re atleast doing things “better”, or if you’re able to add more reps to the tank. Or maybe simply rest less. That’s STILL gains right there.

Tight Calves? One of my clients who is a long time yoga instructor taught me this incredible way to safely put pressure into your calf muscles from top to bottom. Take a towel, roll it up (mine is a towel yoga mat so a bit thicker) and tuck it under your knees and sit down on your heels. It massages the calf with your body weight. Every 45 seconds, move it down your calf and sit back down. First of all, are you doing the right warm up and cool down drills for your goals?

What are the different types even?
.
Let’s learn! ⬇️⬇️

Self-Myofascial Release (SMR) - this is used to help correct existing muscle imbalances and reduce trigger points. I would recommend 5-10 minutes before and after training (examples are foam rolling, lacrosse ball rolling, etc.)
.
Static Stretching - (as seen in picture) this is used to correct existing muscle imbalances and lengthen overactive (aka tight) muscles. You can used a PVC pipe, a band, a partner, or almost any other implement to help you stretch further and longer. I would recommend 3-5 sets of 20-30 seconds stretch! (You will be sweating afterwards)

Active Stretching - This is used to increase the extensibility of the soft tissue. This is designed to increase joint range of motion and muscle flexibility! This really means warming up the muscles you are getting ready to train! I would recommend conducting this both before and after training 5 minutes or so to reduce injury and increase performance, and mind to muscle connection.

Dynamic Stretching - this is used to increase flexibility, and it is the active extension of a muscle. This is extremely critical ensuring proper range of motion, depth, and active contraction of a muscle! Examples being body weight squats, body weight lunges as warm ups with the intention of stretching the muscle!

Mobility & Flexibility . First of all, are you doing the right warm up and cool down drills for your goals? . What are the different types even? . Let’s learn! ⬇️⬇️ . Self-Myofascial Release (SMR) - this is used to help correct existing muscle imbalances and reduce trigger points. I would recommend 5-10 minutes before and after training (examples are foam rolling, lacrosse ball rolling, etc.) . Static Stretching - (as seen in picture) this is used to correct existing muscle imbalances and lengthen overactive (aka tight) muscles. You can used a PVC pipe, a band, a partner, or almost any other implement to help you stretch further and longer. I would recommend 3-5 sets of 20-30 seconds stretch! (You will be sweating afterwards) . Active Stretching - This is used to increase the extensibility of the soft tissue. This is designed to increase joint range of motion and muscle flexibility! This really means warming up the muscles you are getting ready to train! I would recommend conducting this both before and after training 5 minutes or so to reduce injury and increase performance, and mind to muscle connection. . Lo mejor que puedes darle a un #niño es tu #tiempo. ⏳♥️ Como formadores, y sobre todo oyentes de ell@s, entendimos qué les hacía falta. Qué podíamos aportar desde nuestro lugar. Porque sin lugar a dudas, ellos nos enseñan a diario, clase tras clase, qué es lo que realmente VALE.. y de qué estamos hechos. No te pasó de estar con personas chicas y que quizás alguna frase te deja recalculando mil cosas?

Es por eso que ideamos junto al #staff de #institutoraqs, nuestra segunda jornada de clases FAMILIARES, pero ésta vez, al aire libre y abierto al público. La primera vez, fue en la intimidad de nuestro salón. 
Entendimos que creamos lazos y recuerdos para siempre después de una jornada intensiva de risas y mucho pero mucho #baile!
