The Practice of Self-Compassion and Reducing Stress
There is more abundant and accessible stress reduction available to us if we direct our attention away from the "big ticket" relaxation events (the cruises, spas, and anniversary indulgences) and become curious about quieter, subtler forms of relaxation. Of course, we think of the big ticket items because we tend to aggregate all of the stresses in our lives and then look for a comparably sized stress reliever. Self-compassion is a powerful tool for reducing stress before it becomes "cruise-sized" because it can be applied liberally and frequently, and even preemptively before built up stress takes on epic proportions. And similar to the way that eating small meals throughout the day is more effective for staying energized and full than eating two or three large meals, self-compassion is a more effective long-term way of achieving your stress management and wellness goals. Maybe it’s not even so much the FOODS we eat or what we do for WORKOUTS that matters, but moreso our LIFESTYLE as a whole. I’m realizing more and more that STRESS is the underlying cause of most of our struggles, and the habits we live on a daily basis. .
I’ll be completely transparent with you- my stress level has been at a very high level day after day lately. It’s caused me digestive issues, fatigue, loss of appetite, irritability, brain fog, and grumpiness 😝.
A weekend back to the country helped me realize, aha!!, that I need to make stress management as much of a priority as my daily workouts and personal development. .
⚠️ Remember- when you’re stressed, you can digest food properly; hormones get out of whack; you don’t get as much out of your workouts even if you’re pounding yourself to exhaustion; your body can’t recover properly. .
So here’s what I’ve come up with, and you can take it leave what resonates with you:.
▪️make SLEEP a priority. Aim for 7-9 hours a night.
▪️Drink extra water and less coffee ☕️ .
▪️Change things up- Food, Workouts, places you go, things you do. - Eat less sugar 🍫 increase your daily servings of fruits 🍎 and veggies 🥒.
▪️Incorporate yoga into your workout routine. 🧘🏻♀️ It’s not good to ALWAYS go balls to the walls in every single workout. ▪️Make time for FUN. Do things that make you laugh and let go 🙃.
▪️Surround yourself with people who lift you up. Let go of the ones who dampen your spirits 💖.
Make this week about taking back control of your life. Do what you need to do to create the life YOU desire. Because you ARE worth it, and it CAN be yours. ✌🏼.

Have you heard that journaling can help you create new habits and help with stress but you have noooooo idea what to write about?!
I find keeping a daily journal is imperative for organizing my thoughts, and helping me to deal with the “Brain clutter”. I also use it to practice gratitude.
Like anything journaling takes practice. Once you do it enough it becomes a habit and you’ll wonder how you lived without it. You don’t have to sit for hours on end, you can get the benefits from 5-10 min a day.
The key is not to have a pity party for yourself. If you have some negativity it there, write it down, acknowledge it and then move on. You can do that by writing something positive to counteract it.

Multitasking really isn’t what it sounds like because you aren’t actually doing two things at once (well with the exception of mindless tasks like walking and chewing gum). You are actually switching back and forth between two tasks and each time you make the switch it exacts a cost. According to reseracher Dr. David Meyer - the time lost from task switching can range from 25% increase in time for simple task to 100% for more complicated tasks! Holy cow, now that is definitely not more productive.
And multitasking takes a toll on our stress levels. According to “Hacking the American Mind” It alters blood flow in the prefrontal cortex (the executive function part of the brain) as well as other information processing areas leaving us more prone to depression and degenerative changes of the brain!
I used to think that my kids stressed me out… but I really think that attempting to multitask is what makes it so stressful. When I am with my kids and not trying to work at the same time, we have a great time. When I am working, I enjoy that too. But when I am with my kids AND working… that is a serious stress zone.
Can you always avoid this? I know, in my case I cannot. But setting boundaries as to working hours and playing hours helps a ton.
#StressLess Action Item: Make a list of the top 3 things that you are going to do for the day. Choose 3 things that make the most impact. If those were the ONLY 3 things that happened all day, what would you be happy with. And don’t let yourself move on to any other things until those are done! The rest is a bonus.

IF YOU GET STUCK KNOW THAT IS NORMAL! ❤ This is a process. You didn't accumulate STUFF overnight and so purging / cleansing takes time. ♦️

There is a Magic Pill but it it is not the quick fix you are looking for.

For our students, the pressure around school can be a lot. The pressure to get good grades, to make friends, to make the "RIGHT" friends, to look a certain way, etc. This can be even more challenging for teenagers as the complexities involved with self-evaulation come to light; finding out their values and place in the world as budding young adults. .
Parents undoubtedly love and want to support their children but it can sometimes be hard to know how. What do I say? What's my opinion about it? How do I share to connect but not too much (I don't want to put ideas in their head)? .
🌟🧡 Love 🌟🧡 How does love show up in your life? The clinging hug of your baby? The wagging tail of your dog? Your partner's gentle hand on your back? A call from your parents? A text from a friend? 🌟🌟🌟 Do you ever take love for granted? I know I do, now and then, even when I try to recognise and honour it every time I see it show up in my day. Sometimes I'm tired, or busy, or caught up in my own agenda and a moment of expressed love passes me by. As much as I can I try to see that moment though, capture it and pull it into my heart, and appreciate it fully for what it is. I know I'm lucky to have that moment in my life. 🌟🧡 I try to fill myself with love by making sure my energy is full and balanced, and that I'm not being pulled in too many directions. Sometimes that has meant saying no to things like jobs and money and yes to more sleep or time with important people and I can absolutely say that I've never regretted these kinds of decisions because money and jobs come and go but you can never replace those moments with the people you love. 🌟😄 What does love mean to you? Stress is potent occurence in our lives, breaking down not only our resilience to face challenges, but our very wellness that keeps us physically able to perform. If the answer is YES then don't waste time fearing action that has to be taken, TAKE IT!
If the answer is NO, start with a deep breath. Let the realization of the state of things settle. You will deal with the outcome when it comes, "mental preparation" is just another word for worrying and worrying doesn't serve us, it harms us.
Repeat after me:
" NO MATTER WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS OR WHAT MISTAKES I'VE MADE IN THE PAST, IN THIS MOMENT I CAN BREATHE, I AM HERE AND I AM CAPABLE OF ACCEPTING AND TAKING ON WHATEVER COMES NEXT."

My alarm didn’t go off this morning. My fully charged phone just turned off not sure why. Someone riffles through my car. Traffic was horrid on the way to work. It is Monday, and in 1 hour it has made itself known.
I was in a horrible mood last week, mostly due to work stress and I did a poor job handling and it took a migraine for me to realize I need to manage this better.
So when the week got off to a rocky start, I had to stop and reevaluate. I may have gotten up later but I wasn’t late for anything. So I was thankful for the extra sleep. Nothing was taken from my car. Breathe and let it go. At least I am trying too. •••
