BarbiAnn Maynard, of Martin County, Ky., at the Curtis Crum Reservoir in Inez, Ky., Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2018. Once water is collected from the Tug Fork River it is stored at the county’s reservoir before being treated and delivered to customers. Maynard fears the amount of water being pumped from the river isn’t adequate and the water isn’t properly treated, "People will steal water, people will pawn water, water is a commodity here it is as good as cash," she said.

Woke up to a very sad #NewsUpdate from a post several days ago 😥 ➡️ According to #SacBee, "A preliminary investigation by the California Department of Education has found the El Dorado Hills private school where a child with autism stopped breathing and later died last week violated several state regulations when they put the teen in a face-down restraint position for an extended period." Additionally, "Those violations included using an emergency intervention — the prone restraint — for “predictable behavior,” using an emergency intervention as a substitute for the student’s personally-designed behavior intervention plan and using the restraint for longer than necessary." Lynn Jenkins hasn’t left Congress yet, but the Kansas Republican has already launched a new lobbying firm.

Jenkins’ term in the U.S. House doesn’t officially end until the first week of January and she still faces major votes on the farm bill, homeland security budget and other legislation. But her new business, LJ Strategies, LLC, has already registered with the state of Kansas.

Ethics watchdogs say the situation makes a mockery of the rules restricting lawmakers from working as lobbyists until they’ve been out of office for at least one year. “This is an egregious abuse of the revolving door,” said Craig Holman, the lobbyist for Public Citizen, a group which advocates for stricter ethics rules.

Last year, more than 28,000 unaccompanied children were apprehended crossing the border from Mexico to the United States, fleeing gang violence, neglect, abuse, and extreme poverty. Thousands of children make this same journey yearly, many of them losing their limbs or their lives in the process. He, like so many others, fled to the United States in search of something his home country couldn’t offer him: a childhood. .

Iran sentences female pro-reform journalist to jail

Iranian semi-official ISNA news agency is reporting that a revolutionary court has sentenced a female pro-reform journalist to a nearly 13-year prison term over security charges.

The Saturday report said that Hengameh Shahidi can still appeal the verdict that sentenced her to 12 years and 9 months in jail. It did not elaborate.

Shahidi, 43, has been in jail since June after months at large during which she was active on social media.

The outspoken journalist has served many short prison terms, the first following the controversial 2009 president election that led to the re-election of former hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Facing a sexual misconduct investigation and growing political pressure to step down, Eric Bauman announced Thursday that he would resign as chair of the California Democratic Party. “I have made the realization that in order for those to whom I may have caused pain and who need to heal, for my own health, and in the best interest of the Party that I love and to which I have dedicated myself for more than 25 years, it is in everyone’s best interest,” Bauman said in a statement.

It marks a swift downfall for the first openly gay leader of the California Democratic Party, who narrowly won a contentious and controversial race for the chairmanship last year.

One of Bauman’s deputies, Daraka Larimore-Hall, initiated the process to remove him last week after hearing from individuals who said Bauman had sexually harassed and assaulted them at party events. By Monday, the party had launched an investigation into the complaints and Bauman took a leave of absence. He announced Wednesday that he would seek unspecified treatment for health problems and alcohol abuse.

But the calls for Bauman’s departure intensified on Thursday after Gov.-elect Gavin Newsom weighed in. Responding to an article in the Los Angeles Times, which reported that Bauman frequently made explicit remarks to both male and female staffers about their sex lives and bodies and that he touched them in ways that made them uncomfortable, Newsom said he should resign.

US: #Iran violating UN arms exports ban in Yemen, Afghanistan

WASHINGTON- The Trump administration is accusing Iran of stepping up violations of a U.N. ban on arms exports by sending rockets and other weaponry to rebels in Afghanistan and Yemen.

The administration is displaying weapons and fragments of weapons seized in those two countries and elsewhere that it says are evidence that Iran is destabilizing the Middle East and South Asia. The material is being added to a display created last year.

US: #Iran  violating UN arms exports ban in Yemen, Afghanistan WASHINGTON- The Trump administration is accusing Iran of stepping up violations of a U.N. ban on arms exports by sending rockets and other weaponry to rebels in Afghanistan and Yemen. The administration is displaying weapons and fragments of weapons seized in those two countries and elsewhere that it says are evidence that Iran is destabilizing the Middle East and South Asia. The material is being added to a display created last year. Can artisanal weed compete with ‘Big Marijuana’? Boise law prof sees niche for farmers

How craft weed can thrive

Are marijuana veterans right to be concerned that their industry is moving too rapidly from the black market to the stock market?

Yes and no. My own research suggests that a local, sustainable and artisanal model of marijuana production can co-exist with Big Marijuana – much as craft beer has thrived in recent years alongside the traditional macro breweries.

One reason is that whereas the illicit drug trade forced consumers to buy ambiguously sourced marijuana from street dealers, the legal market allows consumers to buy a wide variety of marijuana products from legitimate retail businesses. And more and more consumers are turning to edibles and extracts produced by highly specialized manufacturers.

The staggering number of marijuana strains being developed is creating a connoisseur culture that favors small-scale, artisanal farms that can nimbly adapt to shifts in market demand. Because such farms can market themselves as small, sustainable and local, they can better reflect 21st-century food movement ideals.

Besides efforts at the state level to limit the size of farms, another regulatory approach is the use of appellations to encourage an artisanal pot culture. I have argued that the marijuana industry is well-suited to adopt an appellation system, like the ones you find with wine and cheeses.

Just like a Bordeaux wine comes exclusively from that region of France or Parmigiano-Reggiano is named after the areas of Italy where it originates, Humboldt marijuana may become a prestigious and legally protected designation of origin for marijuana products grown or produced in Humboldt County, California.

It is probably inevitable that Big Marijuana will take hold in some form, but that doesn’t mean the market can’t support the small businesses that have enabled marijuana to become a uniquely local and artisanal industry...https://www.idahostatesman.com/opinion/article222049220.html#storylink=cpy https://www.idahostatesman.com/opinion/article222049220.html

HONDURAS: “State-Sponsored Drug Trafficking.” #NARCOESTADO - No wonder there’s a #massexodus #RefugeeCaravans out of the country! <<Brother of Honduran president detained in Miami for ‘conspiring to import cocaine’ [...] The Honduran news site La Prensa reports that Hernandez “was going to get government finances to pay Inrimar,” a cartel-operated company that sought government contracts with Honduras.

Fabio Lobo, the former president’s son, pleaded guilty to cocaine smuggling, and Rivera has said he bribed both Lobos. Hernandez has denied any involvement in illegal activities.

Rivera’s cooperation with the federal government has brought criminal charges against Fabio Lobo, along with seven police officers from Honduras’ national force and several members of a powerful Honduran banking family, the New York Times reports.

One prosecutor said the evidence points to “state-sponsored drug trafficking,” the Times reports. Investigators have also reportedly looked into allegations that drug money may have financed the political rise of Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez, though Hernandez denies that.
