Yumarrala Ngulu: give voice.
Stories of courage and strength of the Stolen Generations. ”Our family has been impacted by six generations of removals, going back to my great-great-grandmother around 1913, she was taken from Framlingham and taken to Lake Tyers in Gippsland, she was placed with people that she didn’t know and she didn’t have any family with her."
”I think the biggest misconception is that it happened a long time ago. Mum has only just turned 50 this year, so it wasn’t that long ago. And we are deeply impacted by that, I have first cousins that have mental health issues and drug issues from the anger and stuff from their Mum and so on, and that’s been passed down. It’s kinda been learned behaviour, but they feel those traumas as well from their parents.” ”Art has helped [Mum] with her healing. One of her biggest pieces was an artwork about birds, and the birds had no eyes, they just had ears. Once I asked her, why they don’t have eyes, and she said, ‘they don’t pass judgment, they’re not looking, they’re here to pass knowledge down so they take that knowledge in and they give it back and that’s them telling their story and telling their song.’ And that’s like our ancestors, it’s their cultural duty to share their story and pass those stories down.” ”I come from a family that has CEOs and people that run organisations and own their homes but on the flip side I also have family that have drug addictions and all that stuff, but I’ve spoken to a lot of non- Indigenous families and they’re dealing with the same things, so I guess our issues aren’t black issues they’re human issues. That was one thing that my grandma always used to tell me, you can’t always blame the white man for the way they think, it’s not necessarily a white problem it’s a power problem, so it’s a power struggle that we deal with and you look at other cultures around the world who also oppress their own people.” - Dixon Patten (speaking of his mother Carol Wright and the impact on his family).

I've been busy with other projects recently so I've been getting behind with my #100days! Sorry!
Here are a few pieces of old work you may not have seen. Back on track with new work tomorrow!! #the100daysproject #day82 #stolengenerations #firstaustralians #portrait #100daysofdatestamps #datestampart #numbers #stampart #inkstamp #art #illustration #artist #artistsoninstagram
Uni break holiday reading book #2. I thought I knew a lot about the #stolengenerations but through this compelling biography I've learnt so much more of the way laws, policies and inept & racist Government departments destroyed Aboriginal people's lives in WA in the 1950s & 60s. Rene wanted to know if it was true that her mother didn't want her and that she was saved by the missionaries. Another great book from @fremantlepress. #indigenoushistory #aboriginalauthors #australiahasablackhistory

These two ladies worked in stumpwork embroidery.
After properly learning about the harrowing history of the stolen generations and the attempted genocide of Australian's Indigenous people (the stuff they don't teach you in school), I wanted to make something that in some little way reflected their beauty and resilience.

This image is that from a photograph of two Arrernte women and baby taken in Alice Springs, 1895.

Their faces have been molded from clay, their arms from wire and thread, and their clothes with needlelace. One of the challenges of this piece, was capturing the coral of the Australian desert. Even now, I don't think the colours I have here reflect the true beauty of that landscape.

Am I ever pleased with myself on this one! I made it for #nationalindigenouspeoplesday. I am attending tomorrow with my kiddo's class. The celebration for the general public is on June 21st at Victoria Park in the river valley. The festival has partnered with the Edmonton school districts to open the celebration for local schools on the 20th and 22nd.
There is so much value and healing in learning about the Indigenous culture and history.

These books are on loan to me by an older fella who speaks more to ask questions then to answer them. I’ve near begged of him to share his story yet his 90 year old wit out runs me in any conversation and he smiles when his magic has steered the discussion precisely where he wants it to go. As a New Zealand native with both Pakeha and Maori roots, I’ve struggled to grasp how to connect to country since moving to Australia - but my struggle is no more than a flick of dust dancing freely with the breeze in comparison to the graves dug here each day. My sisters and brothers of this great land, I am listening, learning and seeking to understand. I am wiser for asking more than I answer. 🖤💛❤️

Landscape from my series 'After the Apology'. This landscape image accompanies Lorraine McGill-Sippel's portrait in the series. Lorriane was taken away from her Indigenous mother at birth, and adopted out to a non-indigenous couple who could not have children. She didn't meet her birth mother until she was an adult. Lorriane is part of Australia's Stolen Generations: the children who were forcibly removed from their family due to past discriminatory policies. #indigenioispeoplerights #hiddenhistories #stolengenerations #australiasstolengeneration #aftertheapology #theguardian

New artworks by @tonyalbert, #SharynEgan and @moogahlin will be unveiled at the Blacktown Native Institution site at "Ngara – Ngurangwa Byallara (Listen, Hear, Think – The Place Speaks)" next weekend.
As part of their work, the artists responded to the history of the site, as the former home of the Blacktown Native Institution. This is one of the earliest known examples of the institutional removal of Aboriginal children from their families.
We’ll be sharing insights into the artists’ work in the lead-up to the event.
‘We thought about what life was like before invasion and wanted to celebrate that life... Working with kids, elders and families, along with a number of dance groups, we are creating a performance that celebrates the community that’s there now as well as the historical, traditional community.’ - Moogahlin Performing Arts
This celebratory work honours local people who have grown up in Blacktown with the creation of a large scale installation of the #Darug totem – the long necked turtle – which will come to life as the grounds for an evening of dance performance.
Gather with local communities and artists to listen to the past and imagine the future at "Ngara – Ngurangwa Byallara (Listen, Hear, Think – The Place Speaks)".

It’s #reconciliationday and I’m heartbroken as I think what it would have been like to be a child who was taken from their parents, siblings, aunties, uncles...forever apart from their friends, pets, toys, their bed, cuddles from their mum, hugs from dad...how scary and lonely and sad they must have been. I wish from the bottom of my heart that I could un-do what was done to indigenous Australians and I am so #sorry ❤️ #stolengenerations

Such a beautiful day spend at the Colebrook home memorial site today. This is a permanent memorial site for the Aboriginal children and families effected by the Stolen generations. These amazingly powerful statues ‘Grieving Mother’ and ‘Fountain of Tears’ are so powerful. Also witnessed a non-Aboriginal father explaining the pain and senseless trauma this caused to Aboriginal families and our community. His young kids listened deeply and were asking questions, and I felt happy that these kids were learning these lessons so explicitly. #parentingwin #lessonsstartathome #sorryday #stolengenerations #colebrookmemorial #fountainoftears #grievingmother

Warmed my heart to see the aboriginal flag flying high at a Melbourne city roundabout. Not flying next to or in addition to the ‘current’ Australian flag, but standing tall and proud on its own. Some people will say it’s just symbolism. Just lip service. The eternal optimist in me feels that symbolism is at least a starting point for momentum to gain.

❤️💛🖤Yesterday was the 20th anniversary of National Sorry Day. Yesterday (and everyday) I was/am blessed to spend sacred time with my family and celebrate my daughter’s 5th birthday. I am so deeply lucky and eternally grateful to be able to enjoy my family everyday and I acknowledge these dark times in our country’s past where many families were torn apart. I aim to do what I can to create a ballet school with a difference; where young children are nurtured at an early age to celebrate our differences, to learn tolerance and compassion and to (literally) dance hand in hand in an inclusive and wonder-filled environment loving on this land we all are so lucky to get to call our home. ❤️💛🖤#Repost @bangarradancetheatre with @get_repost

National Sorry Day is an Australia-wide observance that acknowledges the impact of Australia’s Stolen Generations. It gives people the chance to come together and share the steps towards healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities. Australia’s Prime Minister Kevin Rudd tabled a motion in parliament on February 13, 2008, apologizing to Australia’s Indigenous people, particularly the Stolen Generations and their families and communities, for the laws and policies that inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss. The apology included a proposal for a policy commission to close the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians in matters such as life expectancy, educational achievement, and economic opportunity. This event is seen by many as a step forward in reconciliation. #sorryday #stolengenerations #ITC #Integratedteamcare #Indigenoushealth #NAPHL #northernausprimaryhealthltd source: (http://bit.ly/2KVxzPB)

In 2 weeks, new artworks by @tonyalbert, #SharynEgan and @moogahlin will be unveiled at the #BlacktownNativeInstitution site at "Ngara – Ngurangwa Byallara (Listen, Hear, Think – The Place Speaks)".
As part of their work, the artists responded to the history of the site, as the former home of the Blacktown Native Institution. This is one of the earliest known examples of the institutional removal of Aboriginal children from their families.
We’ll be sharing insights into the artists’ work in the lead-up to the event.
“My project is about healing the site,” said Tony Albert. “I’m working with … 10 local children and their families to reimagine 10 of the children originally at the Institution.”
A collection of objects created by #TonyAlbert and his young collaborators will be utilised in a ceremony to reach across time to heal and share positive memories.
Gather with local communities and artists to listen to the past and imagine the future at #NgaraNgurangwaByallara

National Sorry Day
Acknowledgement of babies taken from their mothers and families and the pain and heartache families endured for generations as a result of an unjust White Australia policy. The pain of one of my babies being taken from me would be soul destroying. The thought of it brings tears to my eyes. My great grandmother and our family endured that pain. Thank god we know better now. But there is still much to do. Today we acknowledge their journey and work tirelessly to make sure these things don’t continue to happen. We are in an age where Aboriginal children are being taken at faster and larger rates than the stolen generations and we ALL have a responsibility to come up with better solutions

Imagine living peacefully on your ancestral homelands and raising 14 happy kids one day then the next your children forcibly removed from your care, thrown into orphanages and made wards of state 😞This national Sorry day I weep for my nan and great grandmother who experienced this inhuman injustice. Sorry means never doing it again yet Australia is removing Aboriginal children from their families more than ever in history. We got to keep children safe and our families together ❤️ #nationalsorryday #stolengenerations #history

As many of you would know. Tonight is the crowning, the conclusion of the Miss NAIDOC Perth program of which I am a finalist. ...But today is a much more important day than a crowning day. Today is Sorry Day.
Sorry Day is a day when all Australians can acknowledge and recognise members of the Stolen Generations. A day where we acknowledge the negative impacts that the governments forced removal of children from their families had.
The forced removal impacted the children and their families. Today we recognise that these impacts are intergenerational and are still impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families today.
Today is also a day to remember all the children that never found their way home. My Grandfather is one of these children.

Today marks the 10th anniversary of former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's Sorry speech and the 11th anniversary of the "Bringing Them Home Report" being tabled in Federal Parliament.

Please join me today in spending a few moments to think about the people and families impacted by the forced removal of children; the children that never made it home; and the impacts that are still present today.... Please also think about the strength, resilience and courage of these children and their families.
Understanding, empathy and compassion will aid the healing process. It's up to all of us to make the difference in Australia.

Today, on National Sorry Day, we remember the Stolen Generations and the pain and suffering experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families as a result of the forcible removal of children. Lord, hear our prayer of lament, repentance, solidarity and hope.
.
Almighty and loving God,
you who created all people in your image,
Lead us to seek your compassion as we listen to the stories of our past.
You gave your only Son, Jesus, who died and rose again so that sins will be forgiven.
We place before you the pain and anguish of dispossession of land, language, lore, culture and family kinship that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have experienced.
We live in faith that all people will rise from the depths of despair and hopelessness.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families have endured the pain and loss of loved ones, through the separation of children from their families.
We are sorry and ask God’s forgiveness.
Touch the hearts of the broken, homeless and inflicted and heal their spirits.
In your mercy and compassion walk with us as we continue our journey of healing to create a future that is just and equitable.
Lord, you are our hope.
Amen

On this day in 1998, the first "National Sorry Day" was held in Australia, to remember and commemorate the mistreatment of the country's Aboriginal people.

The first Sorry Day was held one year after the report “Bringing them Home” was first tabled in parliament. The report, which resulted from a Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission inquiry, documented the forced removal of many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families. They were then placed into institutional care or with non-Indigenous foster, between 1910 and the 1970s. They have come to be known as the “Stolen Generations.” On February 13, 2008, then Prime Minister Kevin Rudd moved a motion of Apology to the Indigenous Australian "Stolen Generations". On the 13th of February every year, Australians celebrate the anniversary of the apology. #TDIH #NationalSorryDay #StolenGenerations #Australia

It was Sorry Day today. The Office of the Public Advocate held a staff event and our work was invited. We heard about the stolen generations in particular Russell Moore, listened to Archie Roach, watched the Rudd Government’s Apology and the trailer for the upcoming feature After The Apology.
And then we had these wattleseed biscuits with icing in the Aboriginal flag colours.

Landscape from the series After the Apology.
Under parliamentary policies that persisted throughout much of the 20th century, numerous Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were forcibly taken from their family homes and placed in institutions and foster families by church missionaries and government agencies.
These children have become known as The Stolen Generations

10 years ago this year the Australian federal government made an official apology to Australia's First Australians (Indigenous Australians) for the forcible removal of these children from their families and the '...profound grief, suffering and loss...' which this forcible removal policy caused.

‘Be careful when you’re walkin’ this land, ‘cause a child was born here…’ The great Archie Roach, Indigenous Australian singer songwriter performing one of his classics at the Blue Mountains Music Festival earlier this year. Roach’s first album ‘Charcoal Lane’ drew attention to the Stolen Generations and the Australian government’s shameful removal of Aboriginal children from their families. This song, ‘A Child Was Born Here’ is about being born on country, connection to country, and the need to walk with respect through the land. For me, the top moment of our music festival. .
