Hey guys! We often get questions about the healing process, so I have documented the healing of my latest tattoo!
Bonus: you get to see my beautiful dog, Bettie!
NOTE: Not every body/ tattoo heals on the same timeline. This is an informational guide only .
So first a little biology: our skin is made up of the epidermis, dermis, and fat layer underneath. Tattoos penetrate from the epidermis (top layer) to the dermis...leaving you with a beautiful, colorful OPEN WOUND! Your body reacts by sending white blood cells to heal the skin, and in the process, the tattoo will swell/turn red and eventually the dead upper layer will begin to flake off.
Day 1 - fresh, beautiful and bright. Notice my leg is a big swollen -- and no it's not cause I hit quads hard that day (even though I totally did). After I got home and removed the plastic wrap, I sanitized my hands and washed the tattoo with the warmest water I could withstand, then I got some rest (treat yourself nicely after you get tatted). Day 2 - Washed 2x with warm water and mild soap with gentle circular motions, pat dry with clean tissue. Still a bit swollen and warm.
Day 3 - You may notice that the tat looks a bit more tight and dry, especially in the areas with black ink. It is getting ready to peel. This is when I start applying an aftercare cream after washing ~3x a day. Only the smallest layer of aftercare should be applied and on dry skin only. Too much lotion will trap water under your skin and cause gross results.
Days 4 & 5 - Woah! I feel like a shedding snake. As itchy and tempting as it is -- DON'T PEEL! Continue washing/aftercare routine as normal.
Days 6 & 7 - Still peeling, and some small scabs as you can see in the closeup. The tattoo may look healed but it's not yet, I did the slap test.. And it hurts! The upper layer is healing but the 2nd layer dermis is still repairing itself. Be very careful not to pick scabs as this opens the wound and pulls out ink!
Day 8 - Almost done flaking. You can see a close up of the remaining scabs. Shiny spots are from the scabs I picked (I know, I know, I said not to but I'm only human!!)
