Humans blaming another species for problems created by themselves... COME ON! We cannot fall for this again! The world is waking up and we need you to be awake too. This isn't right and we all know it! Let's take action and be heard: 🐚 SAY NO TO SEAL/SEA LION CULLING 🐚

On Friday (Dec 14), the Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission is hosting a meeting to discuss the possibility of a seal and sea lion cull (mass killing) in the Salish Sea. On top of that, the U.S. Senate voted unanimously to pass the Endangered Salmon Predation Prevention Act (S. 3119). The legislation will change the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) in order to lethally remove up to 1,000 seal lions at the mouth of the Columbia River. .
.
So we decided to take action, before it’s too late. But for that we need you, all of you! And it’s this easy:
.
👉 We’ve got UNTIL FRIDAY to flood Washington Fish and Wildlife’s public comment page (link in bio)!!!!!!!!!! .
👉 Please tag anyone you can so we can spread this message quickly! .

As the Southern Resident's fragile population hangs in the balance, there has been growing support both in British Columbia and Washington State to kill thousands of pinnipeds (seals and sea lions) in the name of "saving the whales". Although they're legally protected under the U.S Marine Mammal Protection Act, Senator Maria Cantwell passed the Endangered Salmon Predation Prevention Act earlier this year that will allow for the indiscriminate killing of sea lions throughout the Columbia River and its tributaries. The new legislation means its easier to kill sea lions as former requirements (such as documenting specific sea lions that cause problems and using non-lethal hazing measures) have been removed. Some proponents in British Columbia are proposing up to 50% of "problem" populations should be killed, arguing pinnipeds are consuming too much fish and making it more difficult for the Southern Resident killer whales to find prey.
.
Slaughtering such a vast number of pinnipeds is not only completely unethical, but it also has the potential to have unintended effects on the ecosystem. Bigg's transients are one of three ecotypes residing in the Pacific North West and they exclusively feed on marine mammals, namely harbor seals. These killer whales have been thriving in recent years thanks to healthy pinniped populations. With a potential decline of up to 50%, will the transients suffer as a consequence? The single most effective way to rebound Chinook Salmon populations and save the Southern Resident killer whales is to breach the four lower snake river dams. Don't let them use pinnipeds as a scapegoat. Please call Senator Maria Cantwell ((202) 224-3441) and ask her to repeal the bill she passed legalising the senseless killing of pinnipeds at the Columbia River mouth!

🔵Maestro's Notes: Starting off a hectic day with yet another beautiful interaction filmed on location off the Coast of San Diego, California courtesy of Passionate Cetacean Conservationist, Landscape and Aerial Photographer and Videographer, Domenic Biagini @dolphindronedom - Can you even imagine experiencing something like this? Would you be afraid or excited? I hope you would be filled with joy as there is nothing to fear from these beautiful animals as people. I can still hear the exhalation from these majestic creatures being all around me. It makes for the most beautiful dreams...
•
Killer whales are found in all the world's oceans. They are arguably the most popular and closely-watched whales in the world. Those living along North America are the best studied, with those living around Washington state and British Columbia having been closely monitored for more than 30 years. Populations of killer whales are healthy and stable but counting them is difficult. However, the Southern Resident Killer Whales of British Columbia are on a decline. There are believed to be 30,000 to 80,000 of them worldwide. The populations of some of the prey that killer whales feed one is not so stable. In some places the numbers of salmon and seals that they feed on have dramatically declined.

Killer whales sleep five to eight hours a day, either drifting on the surface, where they can breath, or taking in lungs full of oxygen, and diving to the seabed and settling down there. Killer whales are frequently observed breaching (leaping out of the water), slapping their flippers on the water, spy-hopping (lifting their heads and front flippers out of the water and looking around), doing side rolls, and lobtailing (lifting their flukes high and whacking them down hard on the water). Spyhopping is fairly common. Killer whales do it survey their surroundings. They often do it when tourist boats approach so they can get a look at the boat and see who is on it. And this is what they are doing in this beautiful moment.

The deeper I dive in how @senatormariacantwell slid this “mass murder of pinnipeds bill” through the senate, the darker it becomes. No debate, no experts were brought into brief the floor on the ramifications of a cull, and she simply ignored the fact 8 out of 10 people support the marine mammal protect act, which of course protects pinnipeds. Time to rise up and let Senator Cantwell know your feelings on the topic (202) 224-3441.

Recently in Canada, there have been an alarming number of sea lions washing up, it has been proven that these animals have been shot and killed, for what?

During my time kayaking around Vancouver island I was blessed to spend time with so many beautiful creatures. Sealions are wonderful curious animals, they would cruise along next to our kayaks for hours at a time. They would play and interact with us, ducking and diving and splashing water at the boats. They are huge, powerful creatures yet they live with such grace and agility through the water.
These creatures are supposed to be here. This is their home.
Humans come and take their food, destroy their habitat and now, people want to slaughter them because they are eating their natural food resource.
Every time a sealion washes up, shot in the head, I will remember them surfing the huge waves along side us. Slicing through the 4 meters swells on the west coast, glancing back when we couldn’t keep up as if to say “hurry up, what are you waiting for”. I will remember the call of a mother sealion as she brings her baby back from playing in the surf. I will remember that the ocean is their home, and it does not belong to us.

L88 “Wave Walker”
-
L88 “Wave Walker” was born to L2 “Grace” (est. 1960-2012) in 1993 and was her last known calf.
-
Wave Walker had three siblings, two brothers: L39 “Orcan” (1975-2000) and L78 “Gaia” (1989-2008), and a sister L67 “Splash” (1985-2008). He became an uncle in 1999 when his sister Splash gave birth to her first known calf, L98 “Luna” (1999-2006). Luna later became a well known whale after becoming separated from his mother and pod in July 2001. He stayed in Nootka Sound untill his death on March 10 2006. Splash gave birth to second calf in 2002, L101 “Aurora” (2002-2008). Unfortunately, L88 is the only living member left of the L2 Matriline.
-
Wave Walker was very close with his older brother Gaia and hismother Grace before they passed away and the three of them were almost always seen together. Wave Walker and Gaia were easily spotted due to their distinct saddlepatches and playful behavior. When Gaia passed away during the winter of 2011/2012, Wave Walker continued stayed close to his mother’s side. Unfortunately, Grace passed away later that year in 2012, leaving Wave Walker as the last living member of the L2’s. He now travels with another matriline, the L54’s, consisting of L54 “Ino” (b. 1977) and her two sons: L108 “Coho” (b. 2006) and L117 “Keta” (b. 2010). Another orphaned adult male, L84 “Nyssa” (b. 1990) also travels with them.
-
At 25 years old, Wave Walker is a fully grown adult male orca, who is approaching his life expectancy. The average life expectancy for a male orca is 30 years but they can live until they are about 40-50.
-
His name “Wave Walker” comes from the first encounter researchers had with him, as he was gliding along the top of the water in his mother's slipstream.
-
L88 “Wave Walker” can be identified by his beautiful asymmetrical saddlepatches. His left is slightly open. He also has a small notch near the tip of his dorsal fin.
-

This is Sara...and she is a dear family friend. Not everyone feels the same though, because they obviously have never had a personal interaction with a seal. Ten pinnipeds (seals and sea lions) in these past couple of months have been murdered by humans in the Salish Sea under the false pre-conception they are the reason our salmon population is in decline. It’s so embarrassing being a human sometimes😑
Let me quickly break it down....there are many sea and air creatures that predate on salmon which I will not name due to humans just adding them to the list of animals they will cull. Only 20% of a pinniped’s diet is salmon out of the 60 species they eat on a daily basis. Two important facts why the current trend of killing pinnipeds would be terrible for the Salish Sea (on top of the barbaric pointless act of killing innocent beings): 1. Transient Orcas are thriving because they have enough to eat (pinnipeds). Taking away their food source would put them in the same jeopardy as the starving SRKWs. They are currently trending 1090 successful pinniped hunts a year.
2. Pinnipeds actually eat a considerable amount of Hake which predate on Salmon much more than pinnipeds...in other words without the pinnipeds controlling the hake fish....the hake would wipe out what’s left of the salmon.
So what we do? Breach the Lower Four Snake River Dams! This will provide enough salmon for everyone including the most invasive species=homo sapiens. There will be literally no down sides for anyone when they are breached.

@Regran_ed from @pnwprotectors -  Critically important information from our dear beautiful friends @coextinctionfilm • • • • •
❗️IMPORTANT NEWS❗️At least 10 seal lions have been found shot in Puget Sound. .
.
There is a misconception that the best way to restore wild salmon and save the southern resident killer whales, is to cull seal and sea lions (pinnipeds) who prey on wild salmon. This has gained a lot of momentum in Washington lately and was even one of the solutions the Orca Task Force were talking about.
.
👉 Here’s the thing though, Transients, or Biggs Killer Whales, also prey on pinnipeds and actually consume an average of 1090 per year. If we were to cull seal and sea lions, what would happen to the Biggs killer whales who have been thriving lately because of pinnipeds populations growing? .
.
We are so quick to put the blame on other species and point the finger, while we’re the ones overfishing salmon stocks. So why not look into changing our unsustainable practices instead of killing a population that feeds salmon we are driving to extinction. Meanwhile, scientific data shows pinnipeds consume around 60 different species of fish, including salmon. .
.
It’s not uncommon to find shot sea lions during the winter season, but this year is an unusually high number. Sea lions are protected by the Marine Mammal Act. The fine for killing a sea lion can be up to a year in prison and a $25,000 fine. .
.
So what can you do? .
🌊 Spread Awareness! Tell friends, family or people who don’t know that killing pinnipeds is not the solution. .
🌊 If you have any information about crimes against marine mammals, call NOAA's law enforcement hotline at 800-853-1964.

This whale taught me many things throughout the years I was privileged to know her. She was a force of nature, an embodiment of everything that makes people fall in love with her kin, and a mystery to the end.

Every moment spent in her presence was one in which she taught me something new. Over the years I learned, and I suspect many others did too, a variety of lessons from her, both great and small. She taught us patience. She showed us how to lead by example. How to listen to each other, to the world around us, and to our own hearts. And she taught us how to throw ourselves skyward for the sheer joy of it every once in a while, for the heck of it, just because we can.

May we face the coming times with the same dignity, tenacity, and determination that J2 "Granny" showed us every single day.

Couple of days ago, had the opportunity again to talk about the SRKWs here in Brazil. In honor of J35's calf and in honor of little Scarlet 🖤

It's hard sometimes to build the sentences in my head and explain that sad situation without getting angry again, disappointed, but always hopeful in the end with all the questions and interest of the people who hear about them. Hopefully little by little, sharing Scarlet's story, we can all help wherever we are.

Hoping to one day spend my time with wild orcas. These are Norwegian orcas, there are about 3000 of them. Such a difference with the SRKW.

12/6/18 - Southern Resident Orcas in Puget Sound Today

Just got our boat back from 3 weeks routine maintenance. A beautiful sunny day, calm waters, fuel in the boat.. time to head to Poulsbo for lunch!
On our way south we came across the super sensitive and endangered Southern Resident members of J Pod. Just guessing, but there must of been about twenty Orcas spread wide across Central Puget Sound (West of Seattle's Elliott Bay).
On our way home we also spotted a Humpback just South of Kingston lunge feeding!
Awesome day! *All required distances maintained, 30 min. max viewing before departing each sighting. Large zoom lens used, photos cropped for detail.
For still shots of more J Pod members.. please visit my FB Photography Page.

Killer whales (also known as orcas) are actually a kind of a dolphin. They are the fastest marine mammal and the supreme predator of the sea. The have been timed at 34.5mph and have been observing taking on great white sharks, winning decisively, and attacking and feeding on mako sharks, blue whales and sperm whales.

Killer whales live as long as humans and are the longest living of the dolphin family. Mortality rate among observed animals is very low (1 percent a year for males and 3 percent for bulls). Cows live as to be over 80; bulls about 60. One female in Pugent Sound, known as Granny (J2), was estimated to have born in 1911 and passed away at a legendary age of 105 years old. She was around when the Salish Sea was pristine and free from human intervention.

Their name “killer whale” is derived from early descriptions of them as “whale killers” or “killers of whales." The name orca, which has become fashionable in recent years, is derived from the species scientific name, Orcinus orca . It is not a name some Pacific Northwest Indian tribe gave the whale but rather Latin for “whale from the underworld of the dead." People that are fond of killer whales tend to call them orcas while those that are less fond of them or don't care call them killer whales.

In my latest story there is a link to Salish Sea Orcas 24 min on my channel recorded by David Niewert. Please listen to that. Magical and actually funny, I wonder what they are doing. @respectanimalrights The Salish Sea is home to 2 different species of Orcas. 🐬🐬 74 salmon-eating Southern Resident Orcas and 510 mammal-eating Biggs/Transient Orcas. . The two species of Orcas live in aqueous harmony in the same waters every day. The same polluted, loud, overfished waters .. and yet the Transient Orca population is thriving while the Southern Resident Orcas are starving, swimming near extinction. The glaringly obvious difference = Food! . . . There’s a misguided notion drifting around that blames Pinnipeds (seals & sea lions) as the true culprits to our extreme decline in salmon in the Salish Sea. But then when one dives deeper into scientific data there’s evidential proof that shows that pinnipeds consume around 60 different species of fish including Salmon. And Hake, which are known to prey upon precious Salmon. . . The Transient Orcas are spectacularly awesome at managing pinniped numbers and consume around 1090 per year! . There’s been a heinous rash of culling pinnipeds throughout the Salish Sea and it’s time we all speak up for the voiceless: Our Transient Orcas rely upon Pinnipeds and the Pinnipeds consume copious numbers of predatory fish which would otherwise consume Salmon. Nature is brilliant when we let everything thrive! . Via @pnwprotectors . L84 “Nyssa”
-
L84 “Nyssa” was born in 1990 to first-time mother L51 “Nootka” (est. 1973-1999).
-
Nyssa had only other known sibling, L97 “Tweak” (1999-1999) who died shortly after their mother did. His grandmother is thought to be L3 “Oreana” (est. 1948-2002) and through her he may have had two uncles: L33 “Chinook” (est. 1963-1995) and L74 “Saanich” (1986-2009) and another uncle or aunt L59 (1979-1979). Nyssa’s great-grandmother is thought to be L9 “Hopi” and she had another possible offspring L5 “Tanya” (est. 1964-2012). Tanya had two sons L58 “Sparky” (1980-2002) and L73 “Flash” (1986-2010).
-
On September 25th, 1999, when Nyssa was just 5 years old, Nyssa’s mother’s body washed ashore near Race Rocks. The necropsy revealed that she had a prolapse uterus, which likely occurred after the birth of Nyssa’s brother Tweak back in the spring of 1999. Uterine prolapse can occur when pelvic floor muscles and ligaments stretch and weaken and no longer provide enough support for the uterus. As a result, the uterus slips down out of the body. In some cases, without surgery, this can lead to a fatal infection. Nyssa’s brother Tweak was only a few months old when their mother passed away and he/she went missing shortly after their mother washed ashore.
-
After the death of his mother and sibling, Nyssa began to travel with his grand-aunt L5 “Tanya” and her two sons. When all of them had passed awat he began te travel with another matriline, consisting of L54 “Ino” (b. 1977) and her two sons: L108 “Coho” (b. 2006) and L117 “Keta” (b. 2010). Another orphaned male and L88 “Wave Walker” (b. 1993), also travels with them.
-
Nyssa was one of the whales that were tagged by NOAA back in 2012-2016. This tagging is what caused the death of 20-year-old L95 “Nigel” in 2016.
-
L84 “Nyssa” can be identified by his asymmetrical saddlepatches. His right saddlepatch is closed with a finger and his left is very open. He can also be identified by the notch in the trailing edge of the dorsal fin.

Time an again these whales remind me of the ideals I should strive for in the life I lead. Unity, care, resilience. When times are tough they stick together. They maintain their relationships. They really are amazing beings. We have so much to learn from them. #orca #killerwhale #srkw #lpod #whale #dolphin #whalewatching #salishsea #sanjuanislands #pacificnorthwest #nofishnoblackfish
A science panel has determined that Fraser River chinook salmon are in serious trouble. Of 16 "units" or groupings of Fraser River chinook, they assessed half (eight) as endangered and only one as healthy. Unfortunately, this is only the beginning of an excruciatingly slow Canadian process to protect this iconic species.

The federal government now knows something is seriously wrong, but it will likely be 2022 until something is done.
