Nothing like backbends on a Monday! 💜🙏 Warming up my spine and playing with some of my favourite shapes this morning, ahead of my backbends focused class at 5.15pm at @himalayayogavalleycork. I just love backbends and get so excited when I get to teach backbend focused classes. There is so much to explore and learn, and they just feel amazing once you guide your body into them in a way that feels strong and supported. 
This is a level 2 class, so perfect for anyone who has being doing beginners  classes for a while and looking for a challenge, or any intermediate students looking to spend a little bit more time on the foundations of backbends. Come join me! 🤸 .

It looks like spinal extension, but, guys, wait! There’s a bicep curl/pull-up in there! A unique set up & strength challenge originally posted by @carriespilates a while back.  Though it took me a while to get to it, and it’s actually ideally suited to #thoracicthursday, I finally tried this new #trick 🌟💙 I had to use the #trapeze instead of the fuzzy straps because the straps made my legs too high to clear the horizontal bar between the uprights on the Stott Cadillac.  Carrie, maybe you had open space there? I know some other pilates brands have no bar between the uprights (aside from the one I had my hands on) But, what a great way to activate into spinal extension and the addition of bicep curl- pull-ups were tough, in BOTH grip positions.  Thanks for the #fitspiration 💪🏼❤️🙌🏼😄 #squatsportwear @squatsportwear thanks again! I am loving these leggings! ❤️

Learning how to move the muscles of the core in asana practice is very important, specially during Backbends. 
The right movement of the core muscles creates a wall on the abdominal area that compacts all the organs inside and protects the lumbar spine. This wall acts also as a blockage mechanism for the diaphragm to expand downward during inhalation (which usually makes the belly to expand), so instead the diaphragm expands more towards the sides, expanding also the rib cage and as a consequence creating more space between the vertebrae to bend backwards in a deeper extension of the spine. 
Legs and arms can support this action by acting as levers to the hips and shoulder-blades, which when placed in the right direction facilitate or increase the action of the core muscles. 
Developing the consciousness of this action takes time and consistent practice, as it is not a natural way of breathing. For me, when I pass some days without practicing intermediate series I kind of loose the awareness of it and have to play a lot with Laghuvajrasana and Ustrasana before moving to #kapotasana

Setu Bandhasana, Bridge Pose, is one of those poses that strike fear in the hearts of so many yogis. And I was one of them. Setu means a bridge, dam or a dike whilst Bandha roughly translates to a lock. Setu Bandhasana is thus associated with the formation of a bridge. When the pose is executed the shape resembles a bridge. But for me the pose also symbolises the journey from fear to courage and the bridge that connects these two emotions and states of mind. What is the process that will allow you to walk this bridge with ease and confidence? And the answer to this question equally applies to other challenging postures from handstands to backbends also. To this  I am reminded of the phrase “Ignorance breeds monsters to fill up the vacancies of the soul that are unoccupied by the verities of knowledge”. Fill yourself up with as much knowledge as you can about the anatomy of the body - how muscles, bone, joints and tissues interact in movements. Learn the technical aspects of alignment through reading, observation or practice. Knowledge acquired this way is the key to eliminating fear; in approaching yoga postures, unfamiliar situations, cultures, people and life. Blind faith is a dangerous thing since fear isn’t always irrational and maybe grounded upon good reasons. Jumping into a handstand out of blind faith when you are inadequately prepared is simply silly. You are probably going to hurt yourself. Faith built on a platform of knowledge and education allows one to calculate risk whilst minimising exposure to hurt and injury. This is where confidence comes from. This is where the practitioner takes ownership of their practice. What posture in yoga scares you the most?

E X T E N S I O N is an important part of a healthy S P I N E🌼
As an avid back bender and former competitive gymnast “Natarajasana” or “Lord of the Dance” pose is one of my faves and I love to incorporate heart openers whenever I can. So when I found this small collection of sculptures in different yoga postures I immediately gravitated towards HER.💜
As I tried to snap this image my little guy hopped right into the shot with all his goofy glory and although I have more without him, this one stands out to me. It made me consider how many other yogis feel about back bends, as spinal extension doesn’t come naturally to everyone, and how these vulnerable positions bring up a lot of “stuff” we are grappling with. The physical limitations test our egos and this wide stretch opens us up to feeling all the feels which can be wildly uncomfortable, especially in group settings. His silliness made me consider new words and cues to share in future classes for those who may not embrace tipping back as much as I do. Instead of looking at back bends as rigid and scary I hope to ease students into being more accepting of where their bodies are at in that moment and by approaching these poses in a more child-like manner maybe it can allow us to put aside our fearfulness and expectations to embrace the kleshas that much more.

Neck/shoulder/upper trap pain when you sit at the computer/drive/use your cell phone? Your muscles that are responsible for pulling your shoulders down are likely weak and under active. This is also a great movement to warm up for pull-ups, work your abs, and practice #spinalextension. Try it for 1min with 3 sets each day. #neckpain #shoulderpain #backstrength #core #officeworker #fitness

Seriously though, a word on spinal extension and back exercises. Many people, trainers included, think that the only way to work spinal extension is by actually extending the spine in exercises such as supermans, swan dive and cobra.
.
In reality, these exercises can be potentially risky for people with back injuries or conditions such as osteoporosis. A safer and equally effective way to work the muscles of the back is by challenging spinal extension isometrically.
.
What does that mean? That means that you can work the same muscles by raising a weight in front of your body as long as your back doesn’t round forward. This can be done with freeweight front raises, or as seen here, with kneeling swan prep (arms just lift and lower to a height that thoracic extension can be maintained). The back extensors isometrically stabilize the spine in the upright, extended position.

As you get stronger you can take this move further into extension with a slight backbend, as long as you are dealing with a healthy spine and shoulders. Always place the emphasis on lengthening and supporting the weight of the trunk as opposed to arching.

I lay on my back with my hips raised on a bolster listening to music for about 15 minutes before I finally got my ass up to do  this backbend flow 🙈 ...it felt so nice! I was achey and feeling pretty slow and heavy, and I know my body well enough to know that movement is the medicine it needs when I feel like that.... Monday morning...music playing...moving my body. Feels good.
