Now that the school year is officially over, allow me to formally introduce myself. My name is Sophia Bankett and I just finished my first year as a self-contained FALS teacher in Baltimore County. I received my Bachelor’s in Special Education from Towson University. Here are a few interesting things about me:
1️⃣ I am 22 years old (birthday: September 9th)
2️⃣ I was born and raised in Washington, D.C.
3️⃣ I love to dance. I danced with the Davis Center from 1998-2013 and then continued my dancing career at Towson on Soul Dance Team.
4️⃣ I am a cheerleading coach at Stealth All Stars in Dundalk, MD.
5️⃣ I love, love, loveeeee the movies. I might honestly go twice a week lol .. send help
6️⃣ I love shopping at Target and Staples. They are truly my addiction lol
7️⃣ I am in love with HGTV! I can honestly sit and watch that channel all day long if I was allowed to
8️⃣ Finally, I love what I do. My cousin, Celestine, was my inspiration to be a Special Educator as she has Down Syndrome herself. She taught me to never give up and love the skin you’re in. She is fearless and so loving. There’s nothing “down” about her.
I hope you learned a thing or two about me. I will continue to document my teaching journey here amongst the rest of you. Next up, ESY! :) #teachersofinstagram#spedteacher#teacherlife#teachersfollowteachers#teacherlove
Day 2 dinner! My favorite part of this cleanse is the fact that you can actually eat real food. Along with the high protein shake I get to enjoy this yummy dinner of VEGGIES! I’m actually full from it and feel incredible. .
Bring on Day 3! If you are interested in learning more about the 3 DAY Refresh shoot me a message and I’ll send you some details!
Summer time has me dreaming of country music concerts, laying by the pool, & setting up my first classroom 😜 I am LOVING this bulletin board from Kristine over at @thehipstermusicteacher for the beginning of the year. While I want to build the classroom work displays with the kiddos, I love the idea of having familiar lyrics displayed to welcome them into our safe space ❣️
In my last post, I shared my love for file folder games from @scholasticinc ... and received a lot of messages about how and where I store all of the pieces. • GREAT QUESTION! • I take a sandwich baggie onto the back of the laminated file folder and voila! • If the game has directions, I also glue them into the back before laminating. That way anyone can use the file folders with students and they know how it works. 👍🏼👍🏼

Last year, with the help of Donors Choose, and furniture that my parents donated, I was able to implement flexible seating in my classroom. It was definitely a game changer! My students were empowered by being able to make decisions to sit where they learned best. I’m hoping to add even more options in the 2018-2019 school year.
I figured I would introduce myself on my first post. Here are 5 facts about me:
1. I will be starting my third year of teaching in August. I teach a self-contained 9th-12th grade Special Education class with students with Low Incidence Disabilities. I worked as a paraprofessional in Special Education for two years before becoming a teacher.
2. I am married to an amazing and supportive man who is a Dean at a local school.
3. My husband and I really love to travel when we can. We especially enjoy tropical destinations.
4. We have a spoiled rotten 10 year old pug named Bullet.
5. My husband and I met at Oklahoma state, so we have a house full of orange everything! 🧡
I’m looking forward to posting more about my experiences in teaching and getting to know more people who can relate to being a Special Education teacher.
