What People Need To Stop Doing by 2019:
1. Teendon ka saalan
2. 8 AM college classes
3. Colleges and preparatory schools that don't allow phones (do you really think 17 and 18 year olds won't bring their phones to school?)
4.Cutting off half of your face or your forehead in selfies just because you're insecure: I assure you, no one notices the things you're insecure about as much as you.
5. Hyping up overrated singers and rappers. We know you think flaana banda has good music. We heard you the first time. You don't need to keep mentioning him.
6.Objectification of women in movies, especially item songs. Because women are so much more than that.
7. Pakistani Idol and all similar shows
8. Transphobia, because transgender people are still human beings (just like you) and they deserve basic human rights!
9. Arguing with every feminist about how women are privileged since they don't have to stand in tandoor lines. It’s infuriating.
10. Parents picking their children’s careers for them, even when they're old enough to make an educated decision.
11. Wanting to become a rapper. I mean, guys, come on. Be realistic.
12. MARITAL RAPE! Just because she's your wife doesn't mean you can force her to have sex with you!
13. Having a million babies cause you wanted a boy. Do you really think the earth needs more humans on it? .
I swear...there is no better feeling than the feeling of being S T R O N G🙌🏼 (& probably no better way than to do it with this amazing movement aka the #deadlift 😆). Went from 185lb for 5 feeling like butter 🥞 to 200lb (aimed for 5 but could tell I was losing my bracing & going into slight spinal flexion so knew where I should stop). Ya’ll, I weigh at 115lb BW so this has me all sorts of excited💃🏻. Thank you to my @dac_pt #squad for constantly pushing me in the right direction...helping me work on my weak areas to help me become stronger without pain! Woooh! @prsandsnickersbars @derekmarsette @the_ginger_beast_ @kodaigle 💯
Lately I’ve been thinking to myself...what is it that makes me keep wanting to lift more & more...get stronger & stronger?! I just love this feeling & it’s so addictive!! But why?! 🤔...You see, Growing up in a “Indian/Pakistani-American Muslim household/society”, I was always told...(semi translated): “don’t pick that up, it’s too heavy...let your brother, dad, uncle, husband (insert another male figure) do it”...”you’re like featherweight, don’t try to carry that, it can hurt your female reproductive organs”😳, “calm down with the gym & weight lifting, you are already skinny/look fine”, “don’t get too skinny”, “don’t get too big & muscular”, “you’re lifting weights like men”....blah blah blahhhhhhh! 🤨 •
None of the above about weight lifting is true🙄🙅🏻♀️. Lift weights my fellow women (& men✋) (ie. with proper form & fix your shit aka imbalances before going crazy with load...you only have one body, make it last). You are not a delicate flower & you will not destroy your reproductive organs and the “heavy” weights will not eat you alive or turn you into a muscular man..& even if it does, who cares?!🤷🏻♀️💁🏻♀️ Nope. Hasn’t happened to any woman that I know. Don’t listen to society & help “lift”😜 the stigma of women & heavy weight lifting!
First thing someone asked me when they saw this photo: “Who are you angry at?”
My response: “I️ don’t know where to start... The Cheeto In Chief definitely would be one.” Hahahahahah VOTE (seriously). .
The Lasting Burden
"One evening, we were getting ready for a Christmas party and papa asked mummy if his parents could stay the night- mummy hesitated for a second but agreed.
During the party mummy must have noticed papa having too much to drink as she abruptly told me it was time to go home. Papa sat in the passenger seat and I buckled myself in the middle of the backseat. We drove on the freeway for 10 minutes when papa broke the silence by asking mummy why she was flirting with his friend. Mummy laughed it off and told papa to try and get some sleep, but Papa persisted and his voice escalated quickly.
Mummy kept denying it and after a few seconds he told her that if she didn’t tell him the truth, he would kill us. I think mummy must have panicked as she blurted, “you’re right.” Although what took place next feels like a blur, it has been permanently etched in my memory.
Papa took off his shoe and slammed it against mummy's face so hard that her hands flew off the steering wheel and the car swerved into the next lane.
Tears had begun to fill up my eyes and I screamed so loudly, hoping someone would hear me in our moving car. Her head banged against the window and I could see drops of blood on the window.
I began reciting a prayer in my head and begged God to make it stop. Mummy grabbed the steering wheel and pushed his arms away but papa continued to beat her with his shoe. He called her a whore, bitch, and slut repeatedly and accused her of sleeping with his friends. When she tried to speak, he punched her on her mouth and I screamed even louder.
I begged him to stop and when he grabbed her by the neck, I put my small hands on his arms and tried to pry him off of her from the backseat. He twisted my arms and pushed me away. My body slammed into the seat and the seatbelt snapped across my chest, I couldn’t move.
He told me if I interfered one more time, he would kill us both. I remember mummy shrieking out loud, “If we die tonight, so will you."
I'm awkward. I'm goofy. I obsess over proper grammar. I struggle to connect with people in normal conversations. And I get incredibly uncomfortable in large groups. But this, this is me at my best. Right here, I am in my element. All concerns, fears, and insecurities evaporate as I walk on stage. When I step to the mic, I transform into the version of myself that I strive to be in my daily life. But until then, I have this. I have my poetry. I have my writing. And I have Waheguru. The stage is where I belong. .
Huge thank you to @tsakhuja_walia and the entire @browngirlmag team for putting on such a dope event and allowing me to perform! The #slashiesummit was so inspiring and empowering. Y'all are doing amazing work and I'm grateful for it!
