5 mistakes that will kill your horror film
No.4. "Murder your film with poor casting and neglectful test screening".
-condensed versions for IG-.
.
CASTING a)
So your mom agreed to play the lead? Great. You are about to strangle your film. Listen, I get it... few of us are made of money and often rely on help from family and friends, but unless your mother is an actor to begin with, reconsider.
You are better off having one GOOD actor play multiple roles than five non-actors butcher every scene. Your mum, your brother, your  BFF... if they can't act they can't act. Think of
film-making as football, it is a TEAM sport where you are both coach and talent scout; you aim to win the Super Bowl..Still sound reasonable to have Mommy Dearest suit up as your star running back? Um. No.
1) Think about what you are doing before it's done.
2) Don't let what is convenient for you determine the quality of your work. Read that again.
.
CASTING b)
Remember that the best casting consist of talent+believability. i.e an actor BEST suited for the role.
Sure, shake up stereotypes, go against the grain, but keep your casting within the realm of believability.
Don't cast your 12 yr old cousin- no matter how GREAT of an actor he or she may be-  as the CEO of 'Machete' Inc.' They can't pull off a convincing 40 yr old.
.
SCREENING: Not everyone pairs well together on screen. Be wary of your judgement.  A camera- by it's very nature of being an indiscriminate machine- has a way of picking up on physical chemistry which isn't compromised by a subconscious mind and its assements of people. The camera knows best and won't lie to itself or you.
.
See you next Monday for the 3rd MISTAKE that will KILL YOUR HORROR FILM.💀☠📽
.
Psst,  bonus tip- contact @alexandravlabelle for your next project.
Tell her Tobias sent you.

I captured production sound on location for the shoot, edited the visuals, chose the music, and mixed the audio for the video. - - It was a pleasure working with @sueseriofox29 You always had great energy and spirit even under the least ideal conditions and the resulting content shows that. Thanks for being you🤗. - #WalkToEndAlzheimers  #Alzheimers  #AlzheimersAssociation  #fox29philly  #FOX29  #FOX29Intern  #FieldRecording  #FieldRecorder  #VideoEditing  #VideoEditor  #AudioEditing  #AudioEditor  #AudioMixing  #AudioMixer  #SoundDesign  #SoundDesigner  #SoundEditing  #SoundEditor  #SoundMixing  #SoundMixer  #ProductionSound  #ProductionAudio   #PostProduction  #TV   #Television

It featured several new songs, including "Come into My Head", "Warrior" (on which Kimbra was joined by musicians Mark Foster from Foster the People and DJ A-Trak), and a cover of Nina Simone's "Plain Gold Ring". Vowsreached the top 5 in New Zealand and Australia; on 22 May 2012, the album was released in North America, debuting at number 14 on the Billboard charts.

Vincent Fantauzzo's portrait of Kimbra was a finalist for the 2012 Archibald Prize. The portrait was painted in conjunction with the making of a video featuring Kimbra's song "The Build Up". Kimbra is featured in the 2012 multi-platinum single "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye. On 10 February 2013, she and Gotye won the "Record of the Year" and "Best Pop Duo/Group Performance" awards at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards for "Somebody That I Used to Know". This achievement made her only the third New Zealand singer to win a Grammy Award.

Top 5 reasons you "need" (or should have) a 50mm lens.
.
1. THE PRICE💲
The 50mm is the most affordable prime out there. Many brands make a version which keeps prices relatively low..
2. THE "BOKEH"🎨 (just pronounce this however you like, everyone else does.)
Basically, with a faster lens and the "lens compression" factor, you can get some sharp shots while blurring  backgrounds. Be mindful, bokeh should not substitue for framing and composition. .
3. VERSATILITY.💡
Though tight in small spaces (even tighter if you have it on an APS-C camera-which most hobbyist-beginners do) it has many uses:
a) Portraits: It isn't so wide that it distorts faces like a smart phone, yet it isn't SO telephoto that you'll need to be 3 miles away from your model.
You can blur a background without totally blowing it out; which provides your shot with context.
b) Street Photography: It is ideal for that comfortable distance between yourself and your subject. Sure, in dense, urban areas you may reach for a wider lens to put more in context, but the 50 just has that traditional, special look.
c)  Landscapes: A 50mm will force you to see VERY specific shots you may miss with wider lenses.
d) Speed:  The wider aperture is essential for shooting in low light...allowing faster shutter speeds for action your kit lens can't get.
.
4. COMPOSITION: 📐You won't be able to zoom in and out neurotically like a border agent on crack, so you'll work to get the best framing for your shot; thereby teaching yourself rules of composition by default. And (along with the 24mm and 35mm) a 50mm has been a recognized standard for fixed lenses since the Triassic era.
.
5. I lied. 🐴You only get 4 reasons. But then again, see no.3 "Versatility" A -D...then you actually get 6. .
What are YOUR must have reasons?? Macro? Lightweight? Quality for the $$?

3 ways to sabotage your Art

1. Compete with other Artists.
Art is a deeply nuanced metaphysical, metaphorical, personalized endeavor guided by our unique developement as individuals; formulated by our complex passions to process, interpret and capture the world around us as it pertains to our one true self and that understanding.
.
If your ego insists that you value the standards or achievements set by another person, you may not be as much an Artist as you'd like to believe you are. Join a sports team.
Art can't remain "art" within the realms of a competitive mentality...it can mimic or may even pretend to challenge itself within the medium of expression it resides...but it can't remain pure and shall cease inevitably to be what we know as "art". .
.
2. Chase the trends and compromise your individuality.
.
Fads change and so do you. Lock into a style or method to fit in, get "followers"or "likes" and you may succeed- temporarily- in the poplularity of your social media platforms, but congratulations, you've just destroyed any ACTUAL art you were half-way to bringing to fruition. .
.
3. Ignore Pizza.🍕😃 Yes, these are three ways to sabotage your art. Steer clear of them. 📸🎬🎥🎶🎨

Short version
1. Audio is bad...and audio is KING.
It is a psychological fact that people will tolerate questionable visuals with good, fitting sound design but not the other way around. We need to hear your actors, the environment, a choreography of what we see intertwined with sound.
Music reflects not only our inner feelings, but has a way of representing our intentions. Film is light AND sound...if not then it would be called, you know, photography. .
.
2.  Ineffectual viewer engagement. The viewer has to CARE within seconds about your story. i.e a poor script: poor film grammar, poor casting
are top ways to totally destroy your chances at having a potential audience. .
.
3. It's cliche or over-done. If everyone and their Uncle Bob is producing content in the same style with the same lame fx, transitions, pop culture references, filters, sound bytes which you are, then your masterpiece can have no present value. Law of simple economics.
.
4. You think its "tha bomb". Remember, guns don't kill people, EGO, INSECURITY AND MADNESS kills people...and your art will die an unnecessary death as well if you become too proud of it. Always accept and respect OBJECTIVE critiques, insights and opinions. If you don't you're crazy.
.
5. Your Production Design is boring .i.e a) your location(s) are uninteresting  b) you aren't applying proper lighting c) shots have no visual depth or texture.
.
Bonus .
.
6. Audio is bad. (I know I mentioned this but I just feel that it is such a crucial concern that I would mention it again.😁)
Just remember that sound in general is an aural cue to what is happening in the world around us and each frequency, in various contexts, offer us a way to interpret said world. Get your sound right.
