Merhaba❤️❤️

Sorry Day by Coral Vass
.
National Sorry Day has been commemorated in Australia since 26 May 1998. In the 20th century, many Indigenous children and children with mixed Indigenous and Caucasian heritage were taken away from their families. These children are often referred to as the Stolen Generations. In 2008, then-Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologised for the historic injustices and struggles experienced by First Australians, in particular the Stolen Generations.
.
In this beautifully illustrated book, the story of the Stolen Generations is interwoven with that of a young girl who is attending Kevin Rudd's apology speech with her mother. She loses sight of her mother and experiences feelings of panic and fear similar to what the Stolen Generations would have experienced.
.
This is an important part of Australian history and the book will help young families discuss and remember what Indigenous families endured not so long ago.

Nepean Blue Mountains Healths annual Sorry Day commemoration was held on the 29th of May. Coordinated by the staff from the Aboriginal Health Unit, many people gathered for the ceremony to acknowledge and reflect on the Stolen Generations of Aboriginal Australians- sharing the steps towards healing.
Darug Custodians were privileged to perform the Welcome to County to begin the ceremony which was followed by a beautiful musical performance by @maddi_lyn_music plus an address from NSW Aboriginal Woman of the Year and member of the Stolen Generation Julie Shelley. 📷: @nepeanbluemountains

Social change. One of the world’s oldest civilisations is one step closer to the respect it deserves. The bill now goes to the Upper House of Vic Parliament & if it passes it becomes law. Let them know we want change.

St Brigids, Gwynneville were fortunate to have their Yrs 5 and 6 Canberra excursion last week in #NationalReconciliationWeek.

They received from Parliament a poster of @MrKRudd’s #StolenGeneration Apology speech. They’ll be using this in class this term.

Local Elder Uncle Kevin Butler also came to the school to speak to the children about #NRW2018 and @reconciliationaus. He’s pictured here holding the Apology, with students Ciarn & Patrick.

This morning in the Sydney office we welcomed Susan Moylan-Coombs, Director of Vivid Indigenous Services, in for a morning tea and to have a discussion with us regarding National Reconciliation Week, which was last week.

Susan shared her own story as an infant of the stolen generation and gave us all a better understanding of the 'blind spot' in history. We also learnt about the history of our country, Gaimaragal and ways we can help heal our country.

One of my biggest favs @cathyfreemanfoundation 🖤💛❤️ I remember writing to Cathy Freeman as a kid, she wrote back and I was so stoked to hear our b’days were one day apart!! This was in 1990 just before she won a 🥇 gold medal at the Commonwealth games!! When she carried the Aboriginal & Aussie flag that was an even prouder moment!! I would encourage anyone to write to their heroes as you never know what encouragement they have in store and you bring them!! #reconciliationweek #sorry #sorryday #inspiration #heroes #cathyfreeman #indigenousexcellence

It is reconciliation week here in Australia, and this year's theme is Don't Keep our History a Mystery. The culture of our indigenous people and our shared history is now easier to learn about, but it hasn't always been. When I went through school it was barely mentioned. Today is the first time I have heard of Maria Lock, even though she is a strong, true trailblazer in what must have been very difficult circumstances.
.

At University I once attended a lecture by a member of the stolen generation, which to this day was one of most powerful educational experiences I have ever had. She demonstrated such dignity and forgiveness, and had such commitment to helping people understand the past, despite her personal traumas.
.
I commit to helping my children understand Australia's past and Aboriginal culture. As we travel soon around our country we will seek people who want to share their stories with us. I also have some wonderful books and resources to draw from, though I think talking with real people and learning from the source may be the most powerful way to learn.
.
Today also marks the anniversary of the Mabo Act finally being passed in 1992: a land rights judgement by the high court, formally acknowledging Aboriginal people's connection with the land.

Uluru. A significant landmark for many. But for some it has greater significance. This reconcilation week, we remember Australia's history's darker side. Upon collonisation, in the first centrury the Indigenous population dropped from 1 million to 0.1 million. There were genocides, children stolen away from their mothers' arms, introduced disease and alcohol and most of all, culture lost. There were originally 500 nations across Australia with their traditions varying just as much as across Europe but now only 150 exist today. Even today effects of these events mean Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have poorer living conditions and life expectancy 10 years shorter. And yet, after all this suffering they remain in their rightful place in society, resilient and demanding justice. In my experiences in a remote Indigenous community, I found that their culture and art is as beautiful the people themselves. There's so much to learn, so in national reconciliation week, let's acknowledge, respect and learn from the longest lasting peoples in the world. #reconciliationweek #stopdiscrimination #respect #love #reconciliation #aboriginalandtorresstraitislander #indigenous #culture #australia #ancestors #respectancestralculture #reciliance #acknowledgethetraditionalowners #reconciliationweek2018 #sorryday #uluru #australian #socialjustice

🖤💛❤ Reconciliation 🖤💛❤ This week in Australia is Reconciliation Week, with last Saturday being Sorry Day.
I often see attitudes that go a little like this "Why should I be sorry, I didn't do anything wrong, it was before my time" and - "They should just get over it". Quite some time ago, this used be my attitude too, and being someone with Aboriginal family I should have known better but I didn't.
To anyone with a similar attitude I want to say this.
When you watch the news or read social media and come across a tragedy, maybe someone died, lost a child or suffered some other unimaginable loss, I think it would be fair to say for most of us our heart goes out to them. When someone we know or meet has suffered tragedy the most common response from us is "I'm so sorry for your loss". We feel and show compassion without questioning whether we were responsible for their grief or not.

And that is how I feel this is. The Aboriginal people have lost SO much. They lost their lives, their homes, their culture and worse, many lost their children.
Just for a moment, imagine all of that happening tomorrow. It's WW3, we are invaded and we lose. The new reigning power imposes new laws and a culture completely foreign to and at odds with our own. They take our children from us. Would our patriotic Aussies just get over it? Accept the injustices that occurred because thats just the way it is or a certain amount of time has passed. The wounds from that kind of loss and suffering are deep and need our collective compassion.

And that is why I am sorry. To Aboriginal Australia, I see your pain and I'm sorry.

"When I wear this necklace, the spirit and strength of the Cootamundra girls and the many stories of survival and resilience are close to my heart. This speaks to the universal strength of women, connecting me to my Djugun Aunties and Grandmother and my Mother’s Ancestors. It is a great honour to be gifted this pendant and gives me strength and pride to be standing here today as a young Aboriginal woman.”

What a fantastic event! The Expression Session for Reconsiliation at @headspacemaroochydore was just awesome. So glad we went along!

We enjoyed the Welcome to Country, some emu feather necklace making and painting part of the mural depicting local mullet migration.

Thanks Headspace and @unitedsynergies

rapprochement, détente; fence-mending.”

How have you lived reconciliation this week? I have been trying to make myself more grounded in the present moment when I am experiencing frustration or anger at another person. When I do that I am able to start to reflect on why I feel that way; and I am also invited to begin to imagine what that other person may be experiencing that may be impacting upon our relationship. Reconciliation means I realise that it’s not all about me, but it’s not all about the other person either. It’s about us together. Reflecting individually, communicating together and finding creative ways to understand and even appreciate each other’s differences. Reconciliation is healing. Reconciliation is friendship. We don’t need to be afraid of it, It can only bring good. 🖌: Sister @safina.stewart in ‘Our Mob, Gods story’

I got to discuss Reconciliation Week today with my class. I don’t remember learning the sad parts of Australia’s history so it almost feels like a taboo subject to me when discussing it with kids. So it was great to engage in a mature discussion with my class, who asked some great questions and showed a lot of empathy.
.
We discussed how there are some dark parts in our history but that each generation seems to get better at getting it right. I had 28 Year Fours determined to do the right thing at the end of my lesson.

It’s National Reconciliation Week and I am super proud of @coralvass who launched her beautiful book ‘Sorry Day’ with illustrator @dubleffler retelling the momentous day when Australia, acknowledged the sorrows of the past and said ‘Sorry’ to the generation of indigenous children who were taken from their families. An amazing and important story that many generations can come to understand. #sorryday #nla #coralvass #dubleffler #reconciliationweek #nationallibraryofaustralia

As it's Reconciliation Week I thought I'd share some of my favourite Indigenous children's books! If you don't own some of these I HIGHLY recommend them! Each book creates such beautiful conversations with kids around Indigenous perspectives ❤️💛

Tomorrow I get to celebrate the launch of my rainbow serpent artwork at Concord Hospital, for the Sorry Day ceremony. After almost completing this artwork, that will be donated to Concord Hospital in completion, I have completely reworked it, to following the large mosaic tiled version.
Stay tuned 🔴😉⚫️

Reconciliation Week. My year 3 kiddies and I learnt about 2008- the apology as our research topic to contribute to the whole school timeline of Aboriginal history. To be honest, my kids were mortified. It really made me think how valuable particular learning experiences and historical events are for children to know about. They were all incredibly proud of our poster. Many other classes were “fancy” and added QR codes, but we had no time with the HUGE engaging discussion and a short deadline. #sorryday #apology #aboriginaleducation #sadpartofhistory #iteachthird #reconciliationweek

This is an old land
For ever nurtured and nourished
by the spirit of the Rainbow Serpent.
The land of the Darug people,
Of the Darginung and the Dharawal,
The Gundungurra and the Guringai.

An old land.

This is the new land of the convict and the refugee,
Of the European settler,
Of the Asian and the African,
The American and the Islander.
It is the golden hope-filled land.

A hope-filled land?

This is the silent sun-baked land
Of the gibber plain and granite outcrop
Of the waterhole and the rain forest
Of native title and pastoral lease
Of skyscraper and empty reservoir.

A golden land?

This is a land battered and blackened by bush fire
But look! a land of grass trees green-shooting
in the still dark-smouldering ashes;
Of wildflowers in the sun-heat-blighted desert
And of cities glistened smog-free by an autumn wind.

A sacred land!

This is the Dreaming land, the land of spirit ancestors
Of campfire and corroboree, of rock art and cave painting
A land of mosque and temple, of prayer book and philosophy text
A land of tribal elders and politicians.

And how slowly we have learnt, 60,000 years slowly, how to live with this land
And how slowly we have learnt, 200 years slowly, not to abuse this land
And how slowly we are learning, day-by-day slowly, how to share this land.

We who are black of skin, and white and brown and yellow
And sunburnt pink
Native and newcomer
Blue-eyed and brown-eyed and black-haired and fair-haired.

We will live in harmony in this land
Because this is the Land of the Rainbow Serpent

And we are the Rainbow People.
