Learning something new everyday. Here, grab a branch and wipe a little dirt on top of your seeds you directly put in your ground. Hands don’t touch them, move them, and you have a nice flat area for the future. #farmandtable#urbanfarm#localfood#soil#eastaustin
Yesterday, I was promoting a brand I love and I saw a gal in her early twenties standing in the middle of the #supplement section with an all too familiar glaze over her eyes. She had a piece of paper with, "probiotics - 6 billion or more". I asked why she was seeking the #probiotics . Almost embarrassed, she whispered that she said that she kept getting yeast infections. I asked if she's been on #antibiotics . She told me she had been off and on them for a year with the yeast infections in between. I noticed tears in her eyes and I suddenly remembered being this girl, in exactly the same position, at her age.
I said, "You are on the hamster wheel and the doctor's protocol has created this. You take the antibiotic, you get the #yeastinfection ...yes? Then it manifests into a #bladderinfection , in which you need #antibiotics to cure? And then you do it all over again? Do you see the hamster wheel now?" Her eyes lit up as she nodded. I informed her that the level her friend was suggesting was #childsplay . It never ceases to amaze me how the mere suggestion of levels of 50-100 billion of #beneficialbacteria is frowned upon, yet the #prescription for the #antibiotics that destroys our entire ecology is readily accepted. I directed her to a #probiotic blend designed for us #women and our ecology, at 50 billion.
I went on to describe her guts and the #ecology of her body as being through a nuclear holocaust. There is no life left but as #survivors emerge from the bunkers, they think all is well and #plant the seeds they have saved. They don't #grow because the very makeup of the #soil has been destroyed, setting the scene for the proliferation of #disease , namely #cancer . In this case you need a 'critical care' mentality. You don't go into battle with a handgun. You need a bomb. I also urged her to take a d-mannose / #cranberry supplement to clear the bad bacteria in her urinary tract.
As she made her purchases I thought how great it was she was going to feel about herself when her efforts paid off as I know they will. But more than that she will have taken the first steps to owning her health, and that is a foundation to build on.
I miss getting dirty in a garden. A garden will be a large part of the famous future Emilie Grace Midkiff homestead. Also Irish wolfhounds, horses, roses, porch swings, ten kids and maaaaaybe 1 or 2 cattle 😂
Favourite part of the garden at the moment is the annual green manure patch, with flowering persian clover and phacelia, as well as cereal rye, crimson clover, fodder radish and a few sunflowers. The idea is to have a short term green manure using high biomass plants, sown densely. This results in lots of organic matter being added to the soil, but also plants with different root depths will have different effects on the soil and hopefully aid drainage, alleviate compaction and increase biological activity in the soil for the following crops. We will most likely flail this before it seeds and then cover with silage plastic before early plantings of chard and beetroot in 2019.
