wilderness — noun

1. a wild and uncultivated region, as of forest or desert, uninhabited or inhabited only by wild animals; a tract of wasteland.

2. a tract of land officially designated as such and protected by the U.S. government.

3. any desolate tract, as of open sea.

4. a part of a garden set apart for plants growing with unchecked luxuriance.

5. a bewildering mass or collection.
Wilderness areas by their very nature are wild, natural and undeveloped regions which offer the photographer an incredible range of scenes and lighting situations to capture stunning imagery. Just you and your camera with no distractions of normal urban life such as people, traffic, emails and phone calls is a therapeutic adventure allowing you as the artist to focus on the image and your interpretation of the scene you are capturing. For the wildlife photographer these areas are also very popular to capture some of the animals and birds in their natural environment.

Wilderness areas are highly variable including mountains, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, seas, deserts, marshland, peatland, moorland, tundra, forests, jungle, snow fields and glaciers. They all have one thing in common however, in that they can evoke a feeling of awe, isolation and sometimes vulnerability which can add a special atmosphere to the final image. Combining these wilderness settings with the highly variable lighting and weather conditions that you can encounter there you have an incredible canvas for you to create an infinite range of images with high impact.

These showcased images show the diversity and variability of wilderness areas and the varying atmospheric ambiance they can create in the viewer. Hopefully, this should inspire you as the viewer to get out of your comfort zone, put on your boots and get out into the wilderness to experience it firsthand. If not …. then sit back and just enjoy the images.

As a junior @elainevardamis spent her ski days at Mary Jane with the Winter Park Bump Team. Those skills came in handy on the Audubon mogul field this afternoon...pick your line and go! A little fresh snow in the troughs made for a fun September ski. Eight straight years, 96 straight months and day 133 of the year skiing. Not bad. Let’s fire it up again in 30 days or so on some fresh snow to kick off the winter of 2018-19 right! 🎿❄️🏔#skiing #ski #winteriscoming #firstsnow #hyperlitemountaingear #skibum #shebum #girlswhokickass #girlswhoskibetterthanyou #moguls #snowfield #summerskiing #autumnskiing #nature #getoutstayout #getoutside

This was an absolutely amazing experience, one which I will never forget, flying up and over Fox Glacier rising high into the mountains. Seeing the magnificent snow capped peaks up close, as we crossed over the spine of the Southern Alps, towards New Zealand’s highest peak. Circling Mount Cook and landing in a vast snow field of the most pristine snow I have ever seen .

Sometimes the toughest ascents aren’t the most glorious. ❌ You push, you crawl, you cuss, you slog... and slog some more. Mt. Wood doesn’t have any “classic” routes, there’s no good rock, and if you do it in a day, there’s over 5,000 ft of vertical ascent, with deliciously loose scree and micro-talus for the final 2,000 ft or so. 😤 However, sometimes this type of “climb” reminds me of just why I do it in the first place: to push myself out of my comfort zone, to celebrate the mountain itself, and to find the glory and reward through perseverance and commitment, even when the going gets tough. 🙏🏻 At the end of the day, the summit does offer some incredible views of the Mono Basin, the June Lake Loop, and some of the proud peaks of the Northern Sierra and the Yosemite (Lyell, Dana, Ritter-Banner, etc). ✅ Add it to the list - ⛰No. 40! ~*~

40! ~*~ • • • • • #mountaineering  #peakbagging  #mtwood  #junelakeloop  #monobasin  #monolake  #leevining  #junelake  #mammoth  #mammothlakes  #easternsierra  #easternsierras  #monocounty  #california  #hikingadventures  #snowfield  #perseverance  #commitment  #dedication  #ritual  #sierranevada  #mountainlovers  #naturelovers  #shadowhunters  #fitspo  #fitspiration  #outdoors  #101sierrasummits

It had nothing to do with gear or footwear or backpacking fads or philosophies of any particular era or even with getting from point A to point B.
It had to do with how it felt to be in the wild. With what it was like to walk for miles with no reason other than to witness the accumulation of trees and meadows, mountains and deserts, streams and rocks, rivers and grasses, sunrises and sunsets. The experience was powerful and fundamental. It seemed to me that it had always felt like this to be a human in the wild, and as long as the wild existed it would always feel this way.
