Reminiscing about cruising across the Norwegian waters, peacefully taking some photos of the surroundings from the fishing boat 🎣 The reality was actually me battling Arctic winds with a tripod in tow, getting sprayed with sea water, having numb hands and trying not to be sick on my camera/the boat/a Michelin-started chef. We are sure that everyone has experienced an olfactory memory - a memory that emerges when a passing aroma transports you back to a certain time and a place. As we began to explore the lower isles of Lofoten, unexpectedly we were taken back to a sweet childhood moment - a moment of prying open a canister of fish flakes to feed hungry pet guppies. Those memories surfaced as soon as we stepped out of our little car on our first evening in Å, and continued to surface every time we opened the car door after that. Responsible for those guppy related memories were the dense aromatic clouds emanating from the giant wooden racks of drying codfish.
The skrei cod season came a month or so late this year, so we were treated to the spooky spectacle of seeing thousands of dried cod heads and bodies swaying eerily in the wind, marinating entire towns in their fragrant fishiness. Known as tørrfisk or “stockfish", this is Norway’s longest sustaining export and you can sense that this annual fish harvest is one of the Norwegian traditions that still shapes and binds together the communities up there. We were told stories of the fish sheds remaining open all day long and whenever young children aged 6 - 16 yrs old felt the urge, they could spend their free time during the skrei season cutting off the tongues of the freshly caught fish to sell for pocket money🐟
