MY SILENCE RESPONSE
I sat at the internet cafe browsing anxiously, while trying to find my way around the application I was reviewing. Somehow, a guy was sitting quite close to the computer system I was using.
I knew he was having a full view of what I was doing, which made me uncomfortable. However, I knew he was discussing with the guy on the other system and I had to tolerate his presence.
In silence, I continued what I was doing but had to refrain from pages that would demand my core personal details.
Suddenly he spoke:
'Is the computer screen not close to your face. It will affect your eyes'. I turned my face slightly towards him and didn't utter a word.
My mind was full of annoyance.
Did I ask for your opinion?
Why are you glancing at my work?
Does it concern you?
Do you think that I am one young girl that you intend to impress with your unwanted deed of concern?
The words rushed repeatedly but silence was the only response that could calm my nerves.
Himself and his friend looked at me with anticipation for a response, instead they had to return back to their discussion because it was obvious that I didn't have an answer for them.
I've had occasions where I had to speak my mind but still with caution, to avoid using words that would be hard to retract. At other times, silence gives room to let the issue fade away.
Everyday throws at us events that can skyrocket our mood into full-blown anger with insulting words to follow.
Knowing when to talk and be quiet makes a whole difference.
"Be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger."
