The space shuttle Atlantis. I was within touching distance of this incredible piece of human engineering. Had the best day out at NASA. I would recommend a visit to this place as it’s one of the most interesting destinations in the entire world even for those who are not space nerds. So much to see and I would definitely do it again next time I’m in the USA. #throwbackthursday #kennedyspacecenter #nasa #space #shuttleatlantis #usa #capecanaveral #florida #familyholiday #cantwaittogoback 🤪

We went to Kennedy Space Center last week. It was one of the most awe inspiring places I have ever been. I cried multiple times!

In the late 60s I lived in Florida, and covered a number of Apollo moon missions at Cape Kennedy. The memory of the noise and power of those Saturn V launches is something I can still marvel at years later. The Space Shuttle launches, boosted by fast reacting solid boosters, meant that the time you had for photographing the launch was much shorter. Before you knew it, the Shuttle was up and way in the clouds. In 2009 from the roof of the giant Vehicle Assembly Building, a perfect photo perch if ever there was one, I photographed the launch of the shuttle Atlantis. Changing film holders on a Speed Graphic is a challenging bit of work when the ground is shaking from the noise of the rocket engines. I made one picture just as the Shuttle cleared the tower, flipped the film holder (and cocked the shutter - a key element!) and got a 2nd frame as the plume of smoke and flame rose into the sky. There are a million beautifully composed, sharp, elegant pictures of a shuttle launch, but I loved that the flames and smoke are the only hint of all that power. The lens on the Speed Graphic had a small tilt adjustment, yielding a very narrow zone of focus. photograph ©2018 David Burnett/Contact Press Images #speedgraphic #shuttleatlantis

On July 8, 2011 STS-135 & Space Shuttle Atlantis launched for the final time, effectively becoming the last shuttle to go into space and signaling the close of the #NASA Shuttle Program. It would also be the last time American astronauts would launch from U.S. soil.
-
Personally, I was determined to experience a launch before the program’s termination and was honored to make it to this final one. For those of you who unfortunately did not get the opportunity, there is nothing more #American than watching this beautiful behemoth rise into the sky, to feel the rumble of the massive engines from miles away.

I’m thrilled to have been invited to be a brand ambassador for @bristolwatchcompany. They are a new company developing a unique timepiece specifically for aviators and those truly passionate about flight. This beautiful watch is a salute to an amazing era of space exploration and technology, encompassing an actual piece of #ShuttleAtlantis into the case. This one's for @kennedyspacecenter and #JoinTheJourney. March was a magic month for me, getting to visit such an incredible facility and witness the #GOESS launch as part of the @nasa Social group. I'll never forget wandering the KSC, early on a slow day (after the launch). What a great way to spend a day! Thanks to all the folks who make these moments possible. The #ShuttleAtlantis exhibit is beyond impressive. This space geek felt all the feels that day.😬❤️👍

I could have stared at it for hours. It took my breath away and I got a little emotional when I saw it so close. There was no glass separating you from the shuttle Atlantis. One minute you’re in a room watching a program on the shuttle and the next minute they raise the screen and there it is. I’m ready for another visit #NASA #shuttleatlantis #space #kennedyspacecenter #florida #stillwishiwasanastronaut

Throwback to last November when the wife and I went to @kennedyspacecenter. We had such a great time, and totally geeked out on everything! Unfortunately, we only had time to see maybe a third of all there was to see. Who knew KSC had so much to offer? Can’t wait to go back and show the kids everything. They’ll love it!

Visiting the Kennedy space center with @julianenylund . Definitely would recommend! #spacethefinalfrontier #nasa #shuttleatlantis
Total goosebumps seeing this through the netting - Atlantis actually went to space and came back! So exciting to see it! Gotta love all that NASA have achieved #space #kennedyspacecenter #shuttleatlantis #atlantisshuttle #wow
A few more photos from my recent trip to Kennedy Space Center, including the Apollo 14 Command Module, Apollo 8 launch control room, Apollo era Astronaut van and more.

Amo demais essas coisas...

The undercarriage of OV-104 (Orbital Vehicle) aka #Shuttle #Atlantis at the KSC.
You can see the reentry into the atmosphere burn marks on its final mission in July 2011. So much history in those markings.

This is one of my favorite shots of the two of us. We didn’t agree on everything. But on this day, we agreed that flying out the Shuttle safely on our watch was a major accomplishment (and something we promised President Obama we would do)! #proudday #sts135 #shuttleatlantis

Call me an old softy, but I get emotional every time the curtain goes up to reveal Space Shuttle Atlantis @kennedyspacecenter . One of the greatest exhibits at any museum in the world.
