TZANTZA-

One telling of the prophecy from the Peruvian Quechua shaman #LauroHinostroza states that the 500 years beginning around the 16th century would be a period in which the Eagle way of life would dominate the world. The Condor People, those who embodied intuitive and receptive wisdom, would be almost wiped out. History bears witness to this with the decimation of indigenous peoples, the devaluation of their ways of life, and the severe damage wrought upon the Earth’s ecosystems over the past 500 years.
The prophecy tells of a time when the people of the North, represented by the Eagle, and the people of the South, represented by the Condor, awaken to the realization that they are more capable of strength survival and change when United.  The legend additionally states that at the end of the cycle, which corresponds roughly to 1990, a chance would emerge for these two types to co-exist and cooperate, moving forward into a future that would honor both approaches to living, and bring the earth back into balance.
The Prophecy of the Eagle and the Condor foresaw this current awakening as well as the period of materialism and violence that preceded it.  The time of the Conquistadors and Colonizers took place during what is known as the 8th Pachacuti, a period of 500 years that began around the time that Columbus sailed to the Americas. The 9th #Pachacuti has now begun, and we are witnessing an unprecedented expansion of consciousness as a result.
The prophecy states that in ancient history the human race was split between those of the Condor who pursued intuition, love, and connection with the Great Spirit, sometimes referred to as the feminine path, and those of the Eagle who would pursue intellect, industrialization, and science, or the masculine path.  The prophecy of the Eagle and the Condor found its way from the #Shipibo people of the Peruvian Amazon, to the #Quechua, #Shuar people of Ecuador, the #Mayans in Mexico and Central America, and eventually to the #Hopi and #Lakota Nations of the North among other tribes.

We were surprised with a spectacularly beautiful boat ride welcome to San Vicente!

More specifically, we are in the remote pueblo of San Vicente de Caney, Yantzaza, Zamora Chinchipe Province, Ecuador.

Here, indigenous Saraguro and Shuar cultures mix with Mestizos in a melting pot town on the edge of the Amazon with a population around 400.
This is the community's first time having visitors from another country. They have been welcoming and warm to us, and are excited to share a glimpse into their lives. More on this amazing place and its people soon!

Most shamans believe that illness originates in the spiritual realm. They believe it occurs in our polluted beliefs and our disconnected existence with the earth, with ourselves and each other. This is why they travel into different non-ordinary realms in order to bring back “spirit” to the ordinary realms.

The Shuar Indians, also called Jíbaros, cut off the head of the vanquished ... They cut and reduce it until it fits in a fist ... so that the vanquished does not resuscitate. But the vanquished is not completely defeated until they close their mouths ... that's why they sew their lips with a fiber that never rots.

The Shuar (Šiwar čičam - meaning "The People") live in the Amazon Basin of Ecuador, they are a sub division of the notorious Jivaro. Shuar refer to Spanish-speakers as apach, and to non-Spanish/non-Shuar speakers as inkis. Europeans and European descendants of the Americas used to refer to Shuar as jívaros or jíbaros; this word probably derives from the 16th century Spanish spelling of "shuar" (see Gnerre 1973), but has taken other meanings including "savage"... In addition to the Shuar, there are three other sub-Jivaro including Ashuar, the Aguaruna, and the Huambisa. Although many peoples through out the world have taken the heads of their enemies, the Jivaro are the only ones to practice head shrinking. The shrunken heads are called Tsantsa. The Jivaro were fierce warriors but the Españoles managed to gain a foothold in the late 1500s, driven to extract as much gold as possible. Spanish greed and mercilessness of the Shuar led to a massive revolt in 1599, when the Shuar banded together to free themselves of European oppression. A Spanish governor who was greedy for gold was killed by pouring molten gold down his throat for example. The notoriety of this and their practice of taking and shrinking heads kept outsiders at bay. Thus they were never conquered by the Spaniards and locally referred to as "the unconquered ones”. The Shuar live in an area of mountainous rain forests in eastern Ecudor at the headwaters of the Marañón River. Their homeland sits on what were once rich gold deposits. The foothills of the towering Andes mountain chain form their western border. The other boundaries are formed by rivers filled with dangerous rapids, making them extremely to difficult navigate. Nature has served the Shuar well to isolate them from the advances of conquistadores, explorers, and other colonizers who would not be halted elsewhere. As a result, they remained unchallenged for more than three hundred years in their mist shrouded forest homes. It was not until the nineteenth century that morbid curiosity and a genuine cultural interest brought this group out of the shadows... Continued in the comments

Meri, a young Shuar girl, playing with her pet cochucho “César” in Pitirishka. These animals apparently have a bone in their penis that is highly valued as an aphrodisiac and many people kill them to sell this penis-bone.
