Shou sugi ban - a traditional Japanese technique of scorching wood to preserve it. We’ll be using this technique as our siding as opposed to plastic or vinyl siding. The wood turns out dark and velvety. On my trip to Japan, I got to see this wood in person. The wood is said to last 80-100 years. The act of creating this siding will be a slow and long process. We want to create a home of intention; and if that means for the slow steady race, than we’re game. 🖤🖤🖤
I've lost count but over 1000 octagon's and diamonds have been shaped, divided, glued, sanded, mitred, burnt, brushed and oiled to create 7 panels that form the outward aesthetic of this bespoke drinks cabinet.
As a designer/maker I battle with the line between order and chaos. Knowing when to strive for perfection and when to let go of things beyond my control.
Made by my hand these octagon's will never be perfectly identical. Glued up; various sized gaps form, minor chaos! Sanded flat brings back a little order, then the technigue 'Shou Sugi Ban' adds an element of the unknown. Perfect mitred edges get burnt away, corners rise, gaps enlarge, fire has control and I must give way to it's whim!
I'm so excited to FINALLY be able to share some real pics of this year's sustainability awards, presented by @envirocenterbend this week.
I built these trophies out of wildfire salvage lumber cut @levissawmill
The most sustainable sawmill you can find in Oregon. We burned the wood to salute the wild fire that supplied us the material, then cut the ends to create a geometric ode to the beautiful cascade mountains that we love so much here in Central Oregon. We dyed the ends and encased the whole thing in resin to represent the water that comes down to sustain us in the high desert. It also protects the delicate engraving, courtesy of Adam @joynerinstruments.
What a great project to be a part of. It was such a fun night, with some great food and booze provided by @worthybrewing.
All the recipients had fascinating stories but the one I related to the most was @bendvelo with their awesome J. Livingston bike series made from refurbished salvage bikes and parts.
You should definitely check out all the winners including @centraloregonlocavore with their local everything market,
@volcanoveggies and their crazy aquaponic farm and rad free range kids, (also biodegradable plastic lettuce packaging!?!) @wanderlusttours has an obsession with water cycles you really need to experience in person.
@bethleheminnbend has a eco friendly building that helps sustain humans as much as the earth.
and the Bend Science Station has a net zero building that hosts over 7k kids a year with only a few staff. (probably why they are too busy to get on Instagram.) I can't say enough about the energy and passion of everyone involved with this event.
I wish I could design the trophies every year! But for now I'll settle for watching to see what awesome things these folks come up with next.
Much love and gratitude to everyone involved and all the folks who expressed kind thoughts about our trophies. .
