Much has been said about #HediSlimane ’s debut at #Celine . Opinions are divided on whether Slimane’s 80s LA rock/new wave/punk hardcore aesthetic is right for the brand and will bring in $$. Only time will tell and if this aesthetic will work its 3rd time magic following Dior Homme and YSL.
What got us disappointed about where Celine is heading is the posting of this bag on its IG account. Nothing outstanding or offensive about the retro style with its boxy shape, quilted leather and chain strap; all pretty much features of the standard luxury label “MacBag” since the beginning of 21st century. But for a brand already with a line of iconic, instantly recognisable, beautifully designed bags in its archive (the Box Bag is particularly relevant here). And Celine has never relied on a variation of this “MacBag” style for sales. This is pretty poor show of the new Celine. Perhaps that’s the strategy to completely break away from its recent past. But if you cannot transform a heritage brand with something more spectacular, ground breaking and mind blowing than its previous creations did on their debut. At least you don’t do the brand the disservice of relegating it to a MacBag outlet. Our 2cents worth.
