Zach and I had a funny conversation tonight about “House Canon.” (When something is “canon” it means it is the general rule or principle by which something is measured.) This man is Waldemar Wehe. He worked with Milwaukee architects Leiser and Holst to design and build our house. It’s funny to say “our” house when talking about Wally because we really think of it as HIS house. We just get to live in it. This house was definitely a passion project for Wally. He even signed his name in the cement of the foundation threshold. Good ol’ Wally. As some of you followers are already aware a few weeks after moving into the house we discovered the original blueprints. We know that Waldemar lived in the house until about 1935. When we purchased the house we were pretty confident no major changes had been made since the time it was built. Discovering the blueprints shed light on the fact that a few more dramatic changes were made from the original design. We know that all of the big changes made on the house were made by Wally. We know this from being able to date certain kinds of hardware and/or fixtures. Major changes in this house were all done before 1935 but after 1913 when it was built (Wally time frame). Zach and I realized tonight that we both have been holding to the same belief that changes made by Wally are all fair game for being considered as features that are “original” to the house and therefore not in need of restoration to blueprint level form. If Wally, the true master of this place, deemed a change as necessary than that is good enough for us. Changes made by Wally are things Zach and I both consider “house canon” and we will likely be leaving them just as Wally would have wanted. So I’m curious, for those of you restorers out there...which version of your house are you working to restore to? How far back do you go? Are you cool with a 1930’s style kitchen in a 1900’s house? How do you decide what changes to keep and what changes to “restore” if you don’t have Wally to guide you? 😂

Our floors are not refinished, our walls are full of paint sample colors, our ceilings still have tons of glue from ceiling tiles, our tree is missing a topper but I’m obsessed with this beautiful cozy space. I think we’ve done a pretty great job of finding some loveliness in time for our first Christmas at Sherman Blvd. Cheers to this wonderful holiday season! Claim some beauty even if you’re very much a work in progress!🎄#shermanblvdfoursquare

This is a hard post for me but I share it because these houses and their history matter. I share this in hopes that someone will care enough to want to come and be our neighbor. Thankfully all of these houses are on the historic registry so I believe that means that they can’t be torn down. (Good grief I pray that’s true.) These houses need love. This neighborhood needs love. It’s SUCH an amazing neighborhood. Please come join us on this incredible journey! #shermanblvdfoursquare #shermanpark #milwaukee #cheapoldhouses #foreclosure #milwaukeelove #brewcity #milwakeehistory #creamcity #milwaukeehistory

We’re having a housewarming party in a few weeks and I’m hoping to get at least the front exterior page of the blueprints framed. Where is the best (and most reasonable) place for us to get this preserved and framed? #blueprints #shermanblvdfoursquare

We’re not even close to being done with decorating (this mantle requires some serious garland) but I got these stockings hung and I’m falling in love all over again with this beautiful hearth. I don’t even care that the wall isn’t painted and sconces aren’t hung it’s going to be a beautiful Christmas! #shermanblvdfoursquare

There sure is a ton of beauty in this house. And we haven’t even painted yet! #shermanblvdfoursquare
YOU GUYS, @farmhousevernacular just solved all my bathroom problems with her fancy 500 page historic plumbing resource! These set ups are EXACTLY what our bathroom needs!!! I want a claw foot tub but I only have room for either a shower OR a tub. Not both. I can’t hang the hardware for a shower like a normal set up with a tub because there is no wall. THIS MEETS ALL MY NEEDS AND ITS HISTORICALLY ACCURATE. I DIE.

Second project of the day. Zach is working on the fireplace. We’re determined to have it up and running for the winter/holiday season. Cozy Christmas carols and hot chocolate around the fire. 😍🔥😍#hearth #thisoldhouse #shermanblvdfoursquare

Significant changes were made to this original Vestibule. Swipe right to see the original blueprint. We believe the breezeway was removed when the front porch was enclosed. Enclosing the porch would have made a breezeway redundant. I wish I could see pictures of what it looked like originally. Its hard to make out from the blueprints what that back corner actually looked like. Some kind of seating. While I love what is on the blueprints we know that the original owner made this change so we will leave it as is. This is Waldemar’s house and if it was good enough for him it’s good enough for us. Besides, it is nice having the open space to walk into. (I just love me a built-in.) 😂 #shermanblvdfoursquare #beforeandafter #historichome #homerestoration #thisoldhouse

Our original bathroom. 😍 Someday we will bring her back. Why would anyone remove these old medicine cabinets? Thankfully we have a salvaged one all ready to go for when we redo this bathroom. Swipe to see our current situation. It’s not terrible which is why this project isn’t a priority but looking at these plans just makes me want what should be there. #thisoldhouse #homerestoration #bathroom #medicinecabinet #shermanblvdfoursquare

I’m totally obsessed with the original blue prints to our house. I think they are so beautiful. They are also super helpful. These pictures all indicate where the “Electric” lighting was originally installed. Over the years a lot of the wall sconces have been covered up. Obviously we love old lighting and sconces are the bomb. It’s so cool being able to look up where the wiring is in the walls by just studying these blueprints. It’s also fascinating to see how many lights the original ceiling fixtures were intended to have. “1E” = one electric. Eventually we plan to frame these and put them up in the house. Any recommendations for where to go for framing? #originalblueprint #thisoldhouse #shermanblvdfoursquare #electric #historichome

Eww. A lot of our butlers pantry and doors in our kitchen look like this. The years of dirty hands and cooking have layered up and it’s intense. We’ve done quite a bit of cleaning but this staining is still very noticeable. Is there any magic thing we can do to clean and restore these? Do we just need to sand, stain and seal?

Do you see what I see? I just noticed these hardware holes. There once was a short curtain rod here for accent panels on both sides of this room divider. I’m kind of in love with the idea of bringing these back. Maybe some Morris or Bradbury fabric?! 😍 #thisoldhouse #shermanblvdfoursquare

I was snuggling with the kiddos this morning in our living room and was struck anew by the insanity of the crown moulding in this room. You guys, this is like easily a foot deep. It’s seriously fab. #crownmoulding #oak #thisoldhouse #ExcuseMyPolkadotCeiling #shermanblvdfoursquare

Every door in our house looks like this. We have all of the original doors. We’re pretty sure this long two panel side-by-side is rare. We may need to repair a few doors and possibly replace one but we’ve never seen doors like this anywhere. They were clearly chosen to stay consistent with the prairie style of the home-long, clean, uninterrupted lines. We love them. #prairiestyle #shermanblvdfoursquare

For those of you who watched my ugly cry InstaStory today thank you for your love and encouragement. We really do feel good about our decision to move but feeling so intensely protective of our old house is something that has hit me harder than I expected. I shared those feelings here cause I knew all you old house lovers would get it. 🧡 I wanted to show you all the sink I found for the new house. Leaving that gorgeous kitchen sink behind was something I was particularly sad to do so I knew I would need a salvaged copy for our new house. (Swipe to see the sink in our old house.) This pretty girl is sitting in our garage all ready for us. She gives me hope and I know she’ll be the sweetest reminder of our house we had to say goodbye to. #shermanblvdfoursquare

@farmhousevernacular’s new sink acquisition inspired me to post a picture of our basement bathroom sink. It’s a big day at Sherman Blvd Foursquare. We have still had some things at our old house that we’ve been procrastinating on moving over because of the size. Today we hired movers (first time in this process) to bring over my husband’s 6 Hammond organs and this upright Steinway Piano. This house feels complete now as we finally have music. My musician husband’s heart is full. 🧡 This piano was made in 1888. She sounds absolutely dreamy when played and she’s worn in and faded like an old soul should be. We got her for free. Welcome home, baby girl. #SteinwayFullUpright #SteinwayPiano #shermanblvdfoursquare

I’m pleased to say I was wrong about this piece. I think I was never crazy about it in the old house because it was a lighter wood and also the lines just didn’t seem quite right. In our prairie style Sherman house this piece looks like it belongs here. Simple clean lines and lighter wood are this house’s jam. 😍 #prairiestyle #shermanblvdfoursquare

Anyone else have a landing sink? For a long time we thought this was just a sink for washing up before dinner but after studying the blueprints we learned a toilet once shared this landing space. In 1926 the toilet was removed and the stairs were brought down into the basement for access to the Rathskeller. The sink was left in place. We thought the Rathskeller was original to the house but the patent date on the fixtures in the Rathskeller is from 1926. Our original homeowner, Waldemar C. Wehe, was the one who added the Rathskeller so we still think of it as original. We actually think Waldemar may have built the Rathskeller because he was trying his hand at politics and a basement beer hall would have been the perfect place to hobnob with the political elite of Milwaukee. 🍻

Share your thoughts on painting radiators please. Most of the ones in our house are already painted. I’ve been planning on painting them in a color to go with the room but it occurred to me that maybe they should be stripped?? Is stripping radiators a thing? #radiators #thisoldhouse #shermanblvdfoursquare

We really have an insane amount of beautiful light fixtures in this house. #shermanblvdfoursquare #antiquelighting
Since you all enjoyed that last before and after here’s another one. This room had a terrible light fixture that we replaced with a glorious one. It also had carpet, ceiling tiles and way. too. much. stuff. We haven’t refinished the floors and we haven’t painted. We don’t even really have furniture in here but the contrast is insane. Swipe for a picture from our walk through. 😳#shermanblvdfoursquare

A beautiful angle of the living room that I don’t think I’ve shown before. These funny little things are the hardware for speaking tubes. We hope to one day restore the speaking tubes in our house but it all depends on our ability to find some of this hardware. Perfect light installed in our kitchen. It’s a vintage schoolhouse light from no later than the 20’s. See the post from @old_style below for a little more info. The kitchen is a mess but at least we have pretty fixtures. Swipe to see it lit up and swipe again to see what was left by the previous owner. #shermanblvdfoursquare

We don’t really have any “after” pictures at this point since we are still very early into this process. We have a lot of progress pictures though and this one is particularly satisfying after comparing it to the before picture. This is our dining room. We haven’t painted. We don’t have money for window treatments. We can’t afford to refinish the hardwood floors. All we’ve done is pull up carpet, pull out nails and lots of deep cleaning. But we have clearly helped this room find her soul again and it’s pretty damn satisfying even in the in between phase. Swipe right for the listing picture. 😱 It’s truly a miracle we ever decided to even do a walk through. #shermanblvdfoursquare #beforeandafter #beforeandafterish #craftsmanhome #craftsmanfoursquare

This is so pleasing to me. The clean lines and symmetry of Arts and Crafts paired with the feminine curves of Art Nouveau is like mental massage. I could stare at this all day. When you live in an incredible historic home you’re trying to bring back to its original glory and you get this text from your husband you get your lazy self out of bed and hurry your butt to the basement. You’ll never believe what he just found...

Lets talk about landing window treatments. This window is massive. I like the idea of just a pull shade like this (maybe with an Arts and Crafts stencil accent). But I’m wondering if it needs some kind of curtain? In old beautiful homes sometimes I just prefer a window that isn’t covered up. Thoughts? (Eventually this wall will be an earth tone green.) #shermanblvdfoursquare

Antique push button swichplate. Brass with mother of pearl accent on the “on” button. My husband has been collecting these his whole life. Curtains arrived today! 😍 This is all a bit more eclectic (and contemporary) than we usually go but I’m really loving it! The rest of the house will be very consistent with the traditional Arts and Crafts style of the house but it’s fun to have our bedroom show a little more whimsy. Looking forward to many deep convos with my hubs in this space. A little space just for us. #shermanblvdfoursquare

Tomorrow is our 13th wedding anniversary. Zach and I have had visions of a sweet little corner of our bedroom to sip coffee and grow old together in this house. I found an awesome accent chair early on in this process but we needed one more to complete the nook. This chair was my anniversary present to the two of us. Zach will get the yellow one for his tall self and I get the pretty multicolored one. I surprised him and had them sitting in our room when he came home from work. Happy anniversary to us! #shermanblvdfoursquare #growoldwithme

A sad post: As I am now officially in contact with the living descendants of Waldemar Wehe I have been able to piece together some information. One thing that has confused me about the Wehe family is that they were clearly wealthy, successful and prominent in the city of Milwaukee in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. We know Waldemar did not stay in this house until his death in 1941. He clearly built this house with tons of personal touches and it just didn’t make sense to me why he wouldn’t have stayed. I found out from his granddaughter that as a lawyer he had many clients who owed him money when The Depression hit. He also had invested a lot of money in the mining industry in Washington state. Upon his death he was penniless leaving his wife and daughter to have to move in with family. 😯😭 The Depression had a slow recovery but is basically marked as ending in 1941 when the U.S. went to war. Waldemar died on December 10, 1941, four days after Pearl Harbor was bombed. He died as his country went to war and before the real recovery from The Depression was felt. It’s been a sad few days around here as we have pulled this story together. It makes me feel an even deeper commitment to bringing this house back to everything Waldemar envisioned it to be. #homehistory #milwaukeehistory #thegreatdepression #loss #shermanblvdfoursquare

I’ve officially made contact with the living relatives of the man who built our house. One of them sent me this picture today. Once the kiddos are asleep I’m hoping to spend some time trying to map out the family tree so I can keep track of the names I’m coming across in my research. We’ve also made a lot of progress in mapping out all of the home owners between him and us. Still hopeful we’re going to happen upon some interior photos at some point. 🤞🏽 #shermanblvdfoursquare

Saturday means it’s project day at the house (who am I kidding, that’s every day right now). This room was originally the library. It’s gorgeous with extra tall oak trim and tons of beautiful windows. This will be our middle son’s room. He picked Broccoflower by Sherwin Williams for his wall color. We need to wash all the wallpaper glue off the walls, scrape the ceiling tile glue off the ceiling, finish filling holes and repairing the plaster and then paint this baby. We won’t get to all of that today but it’s exciting to be working on a new room. #thisoldhouse #shermanblvdfoursquare #saturdayproject #homerestoration

Waldemar C. Wehe on the left with his older brother (August George) and sister (Adela). There were two other siblings, a brother who died at 5 years old (Hugo) and an older sister (Alwina) who died at 20 (before this photo was taken). Alwina was 11 years older than Waldemar. Waldemar was the baby of the family. Photo from the Milwaukee Historical Society. #milwaukeehistory #shermanblvdfoursquare

You guys! The Milwaukee Historical Society had a WHOLE Wehe family album. I about died. ⚰️ It enabled me to connect the dots between two Wehe families that I thought were not connected. I wish I could take this HOME. 😩 I found out so many fascinating things today and I ran out of time. I will definitely be going back soon. #milwaukee #milwaukeehistory #milwaukeehistoricalsociety #thisoldhouse #shermanblvdfoursquare
Look what I found today at the the Milwaukee Historical Society!!!!! It was the second picture I found in the folder on, “Sherman Boulevard” and I actually squealed with delight. I’m pretty sure this picture is from the 30’s or 40’s so it’s not from right after the house was built but I’m so happy to have found it!!!!! #shermanblvdfoursquare #milwaukee #milwaukeehistory #milwaukeehistoricalsociety #historynerd
Pretty milk glass door handle on the inside of our kitchen door. I heard from a friend who was a tour guide at the Pabst that they would do glass in spaces where cleanliness was important because it was supposed to be more hygienic. The other side of this door is brass. The brass knob was in the public space where they would entertain. Public spaces are where you would invest money on the “finer things” so you could impress your guests. Little things like this are what make me love old houses. There’s a story everywhere. #oldhouselove #publicandprivatespaces #shermanblvdfoursquare #thisoldhouse #antiquehardware

Waldemar C. Wehe. The man who built our house. #milwaukee #milwaukeehistory #shermanblvdfoursquare
We realized after arriving that the archives/research section of the Milwaukee Historical Society is closed on Mondays. ☹️ We had the itch to do some historical digging so we went over to the Milwaukee Public Library instead. We couldn’t find any pictures of our house amongst images of Sherman Blvd but we got so close with this image. Swipe right and you’ll see the same view today. There’s a tiny yellow sign on the right and in front of that is our dumpster. 😜 So you can ALMOST see our house in the historical photo. #soclose #historichome #milwaukee #milwaukeehistory #milwaukeehistoricalsociety #thenandnow #historicphoto #shermanblvdfoursquare

Porch inspo. So dreamy. #shermanblvdfoursquare
After getting everything hauled out to the dumpster we have reclaimed our porch and I’m so in love. This space is beautiful (and massive). My in-laws came and scrubbed until it shined and now it smells lovely. I’m hoping to get a few moments to hit up the Milwaukee Historical Society records today to try to track down a historical exterior picture. In clearing out this space we realized that the original front door was curved on top.😍😭 I’m also curious to see some of the old landscaping. #shermanblvdfoursquare #Milwaukee #MilwaukeeHistory

This is our Rathskeller. There is groundwater that has been a problem for years that we will need to rectify. The previous owner had so much stuff this corner was hard to see before we owned the house. Generally speaking we’re not too worried. A sump pump and some drain tiles will go a long way to rectifying the problem and since we just had that installed in our old house we aren’t so intimidated by the process. The fun thing about these two pictures is that we have started the process of pulling the paneling down (not original). Behind the paneling we discovered the extent of the plaster damage. The plaster along the exterior wall is basically non existent. The GOOD news is that behind the plaster we have beautiful cream city brick! Zach and I both immediately knew that rather than put in plaster to bring this back to its original state we definitely want to leave some of this brick exposed. Cream city brick is such a piece of Milwaukee history. Our dream for this space is to have it be all about our awesome city. Incorporating cream city brick is just the most perfect addition. #ratheskeller #creamcitybrick #milwaukee #milwaukeehistory #shermanblvdfoursquare

Look what arrived today!! We have an insane amount of crap that we have pulled out of this house and in an attempt to save a little money we were waiting till we had most of it out before bringing a dumpster in. That means all the crap has been stored on our front porch. 😳 Tomorrow we haul it all into this big baby and I get to start reclaiming our pretty, enclosed porch space. 💃🏼 This stuff is stinky! I can’t wait to get it out of the house!!! #ByeFelicia #shermanblvdfoursquare #dumpsterday

We’re not even remotely close to having any “after” pictures in this process but this room is relatively livable and it is quite satisfying to see how far we’ve come. This is our current situation. Swipe right for the empty space when the house became ours and a few “before” listing pictures from the previous owner. The last picture is a swatch of what the color in this room will eventually be. Feels good to have some pretty and livable space even if it’s not “done.” #shermanblvdfoursquare #progresspicture #thisoldhouse #craftsmanhome #artsandcraftsmovement #prairiefoursquare

Sometimes having the original blueprints ends up just adding to our old house mysteries. See that circle there? That’s a toilet. It’s definitely not in the house and definitely never was (no plumbing). The cute little sink IS there though. Were toilets down a little landing like this a thing? (Our house was built in 1913 as a point of reference.) There are definite changes from the original blueprints but this was one we hadn’t spotted until tonight. We believe this was altered when Wehe made the decision to build the Rathskeller instead of the laundry room (well done there). It would make sense that he would have wanted this to be stairs that went all the way down so his company wouldn’t have to go through the private kitchen space. Old house mysteries are just all part of the fun. #oldhousemystery #thisoldhouse #shermanblvdfoursquare

We’ve taken up so much carpet that the process has become a bit mundane but I’m still always astounded by how absolutely gorgeous the wood is in this house. Now, can we please pass a law that beautiful hardwood floors can NOT be stapled to death for carpet installation?! Penalty of death sounds about right. Who’s with me? 🙋🏻‍♀️ #carpetisfinalllyallout #shermanblvdfoursquare #hardwoodfloors #originalisalwaysbetter

Gorgeous lamp we collected ages ago with Edison lightbulbs from pre 1910. This is why we’re super nerds. Zach found a radio station that plays only music from the decade our house was built. So basically this will play all day every day in our house. 🤓🎼 #shermanblvdfoursquare

So here’s our best theory for this back porch turned interior room. It was done very early on and it was done with full commitment to convert it to an interior space. We believe that originally there was a step down from the house onto the porch. When the room was enclosed the floor was brought level with the interior house floor. The gap between the porch and new floor was used to run piping for this radiator to bring heat into the room. Removing the installed floor would be major work since it would require dealing with the radiator piping. Looks like we’ll be leaving the wood floor as is. #mysterysolved #shermanblvdfoursquare

All the carpet is up in the house except for a few more stairs and this back porch room. Once we discovered that it was originally an exterior porch (per blueprints) we assumed the flooring we would be dealing with would be the same as the front porch (some kind of decorative cement shown if you swipe right). We figured this room would be super easy to pull up the carpet cause you can’t staple into cement. We took a peek today and it turns out we have linoleum and then wood. 🧐🤔 So now we’re very confused (and a bit disappointed that an “easy” room will actually be quite complicated). The base of this room is definitely cement. Why put wood down over cement?!? Do we dare pull up the wood to see what’s under there?! #shermanblvdfoursquare #oldhousemystery #thisoldhouse #rehabaddict

New house mystery: We’ve continued to work on pulling up the rest of the carpet on the first floor and stairs. This is the front door entry. The original blueprints had a vestibule here that we were convinced was changed and removed from the design thus never originally built. Now that we’ve pulled up the carpet we see that there was indeed something here originally. The wood repair is super old and now I’m wondering if perhaps they originally built the vestibule and then decided to enclose the front porch (not enclosed on the original blueprints). Once the front porch was enclosed there wouldn’t have really been need for a vestibule. I like the space open so I don’t think we’ll be putting structures up here but I sure wish I knew what it originally looked like! #shermanblvdfoursquare #thisoldhouse #oldhousemystery #rehabaddict #hardwoodfloors

This is a terrible google street view picture of the house that I lived in until the age of 10. I was born the night my parents closed and got the key to this house. I have many memories of this old house. It was a beautiful prairie style foursquare built in 1925. After we bought the Sherman Blvd house my family members started saying how much it reminded them of this house. It hadn’t occurred to me but they were so right! This first house deeply shaped my ideal sense of “home.” Sensory experiences connect us to our memories. Being in the Sherman Blvd house has reminded me of the wood floor creaks from when I was a little girl. When I move in this house and hear the wood settle it’s such a comforting sound. #home #shermanblvdfoursquare #prairiestyle #foursquarehome #nostalgia

This is our General Electric Monitor Top refrigerator from 1934. We’ve had it for over ten years and it runs like a dream. It also weighs a TON so we’re waiting to move it over from the old house until we have the piano movers come. When I first posted this on Instagram on my personal account years ago I was one of the few hashtags for #monitortoprefrigerator It’s fun to see that there are quite a few now. It would be awesome if people would discover how amazing old appliances can be. Did you know that we have the technology to make lasting appliances? We just don’t do it because of a nasty little thing called “planned obsolescence.” Look it up. One of the many reasons Zach and I love old things so much is because they were built to last. This fridge came with a 30 year warranty! Can you imagine an appliance with a warranty like that today?! We’ve become a disposable society and in the process value for well made things has died. #originalisalwaysbetter #monitortoprefrigerator #monitortop #plannedobsolescence #shermanblvdfoursquare #thisoldhouse
