These funny little things are the hardware for speaking tubes. We hope to one day restore the speaking tubes in our house but it all depends on our ability to find some of this hardware. There are no reproductions of these that we know of so we have to track down some originals. Anyone ever seen some in the wild? What item are you on the hunt for in your restoration efforts? #shermanblvdfoursquare #speakingtubes #homerestoration #thisoldhouse #antiquehardware

This isn’t the same brand as the one in our home but another technological advance installed by the original owner was a built in vacuum system. It was way ahead of its time. #shermanblvdfoursquare

We don’t really have any “after” pictures at this point since we are still very early into this process. We have a lot of progress pictures though and this one is particularly satisfying after comparing it to the before picture. This is our dining room. We haven’t painted. We don’t have money for window treatments. We can’t afford to refinish the hardwood floors. All we’ve done is pull up carpet, pull out nails and lots of deep cleaning. But we have clearly helped this room find her soul again and it’s pretty damn satisfying even in the in between phase. Swipe right for the listing picture. 😱 It’s truly a miracle we ever decided to even do a walk through. #shermanblvdfoursquare #beforeandafter #beforeandafterish #craftsmanhome #craftsmanfoursquare

This is so pleasing to me. The clean lines and symmetry of Arts and Crafts paired with the feminine curves of Art Nouveau is like mental massage. I could stare at this all day. In the second picture you can see our gorgeous bedroom fixture reflected in the mirror. So much loveliness in this room. #shermanblvdfoursquare

When you live in an incredible historic home you’re trying to bring back to its original glory and you get this text from your husband you get your lazy self out of bed and hurry your butt to the basement. You’ll never believe what he just found...

I picked up our photos we had printed from the Milwaukee Historical Society yesterday. Can’t wait to get frames for these and find a place to hang them. #thisoldhouse #shermanblvdfoursquare #historichome
Do you know about public and private spaces in old homes? The front of the house where you would have visitors (public space) is where you would upgrade to fancier things: nicer wood, more ornamentation, fancier hardware and fixtures, etc. Private spaces like bedrooms and kitchens, where visitors were not intended to see, would have less fancy details to save money. The door from the public space of our house into our kitchen is a perfect example of this. The door itself is made of maple (a cheaper wood). The side with the glass knob is the kitchen side. Less fancy knob and less fancy wood for the private space. The side with the brass knob is where guests would still be able to see. Brass would have been a hardware upgrade for the public space. What’s so amazing about this door is that when the house was built someone painstakingly veneered oak over the public space of the door. Viewing the door from the public space side you would never know that it is actually made from the cheaper maple wood. These amazing details and how they connect us to history are what we love so much about old homes. #shermanblvdfoursquare #publicandprivate #thisoldhouse

Lets talk about landing window treatments. This window is massive. I like the idea of just a pull shade like this (maybe with an Arts and Crafts stencil accent). But I’m wondering if it needs some kind of curtain? In old beautiful homes sometimes I just prefer a window that isn’t covered up. Thoughts? (Eventually this wall will be an earth tone green.) #shermanblvdfoursquare

Antique push button swichplate. Brass with mother of pearl accent on the “on” button. My husband has been collecting these his whole life. They are historically accurate for when our house was built and we’re gonna fill this house with them. 😍 These are so satisfying to turn on and off. #antiquelighting #lightingnerds #pushbutton #shermanblvdfoursquare

Curtains arrived today! 😍 This is all a bit more eclectic (and contemporary) than we usually go but I’m really loving it! The rest of the house will be very consistent with the traditional Arts and Crafts style of the house but it’s fun to have our bedroom show a little more whimsy. Looking forward to many deep convos with my hubs in this space. A little space just for us. #shermanblvdfoursquare

Tomorrow is our 13th wedding anniversary. Zach and I have had visions of a sweet little corner of our bedroom to sip coffee and grow old together in this house. I found an awesome accent chair early on in this process but we needed one more to complete the nook. This chair was my anniversary present to the two of us. Zach will get the yellow one for his tall self and I get the pretty multicolored one. I surprised him and had them sitting in our room when he came home from work. Happy anniversary to us! #shermanblvdfoursquare #growoldwithme

We have two of these sconces that were original to the house. They were in such bad shape that we almost didn’t keep them. (The horror!) SO glad we got a peek under all the paint. Look at all this pretty detail!! #shermanblvdfoursquare #originalcharacter #originalisalwaysbetter #wallsconce #brass

A sad post: As I am now officially in contact with the living descendants of Waldemar Wehe I have been able to piece together some information. One thing that has confused me about the Wehe family is that they were clearly wealthy, successful and prominent in the city of Milwaukee in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. We know Waldemar did not stay in this house until his death in 1941. He clearly built this house with tons of personal touches and it just didn’t make sense to me why he wouldn’t have stayed. I found out from his granddaughter that as a lawyer he had many clients who owed him money when The Depression hit. He also had invested a lot of money in the mining industry in Washington state. Upon his death he was penniless leaving his wife and daughter to have to move in with family. 😯😭 The Depression had a slow recovery but is basically marked as ending in 1941 when the U.S. went to war. Waldemar died on December 10, 1941, four days after Pearl Harbor was bombed. He died as his country went to war and before the real recovery from The Depression was felt. It’s been a sad few days around here as we have pulled this story together. It makes me feel an even deeper commitment to bringing this house back to everything Waldemar envisioned it to be. #homehistory #milwaukeehistory #thegreatdepression #loss #shermanblvdfoursquare

I’ve officially made contact with the living relatives of the man who built our house. One of them sent me this picture today. Once the kiddos are asleep I’m hoping to spend some time trying to map out the family tree so I can keep track of the names I’m coming across in my research. We’ve also made a lot of progress in mapping out all of the home owners between him and us. Still hopeful we’re going to happen upon some interior photos at some point. 🤞🏽 #shermanblvdfoursquare

Saturday means it’s project day at the house (who am I kidding, that’s every day right now). This room was originally the library. It’s gorgeous with extra tall oak trim and tons of beautiful windows. This will be our middle son’s room. He picked Broccoflower by Sherwin Williams for his wall color. We need to wash all the wallpaper glue off the walls, scrape the ceiling tile glue off the ceiling, finish filling holes and repairing the plaster and then paint this baby. We won’t get to all of that today but it’s exciting to be working on a new room. #thisoldhouse #shermanblvdfoursquare #saturdayproject #homerestoration

Waldemar C. Wehe on the left with his older brother (August George) and sister (Adela). There were two other siblings, a brother who died at 5 years old (Hugo) and an older sister (Alwina) who died at 20 (before this photo was taken). Alwina was 11 years older than Waldemar. Waldemar was the baby of the family. Photo from the Milwaukee Historical Society. #milwaukeehistory #shermanblvdfoursquare

You guys! The Milwaukee Historical Society had a WHOLE Wehe family album. I about died. ⚰️ It enabled me to connect the dots between two Wehe families that I thought were not connected. I wish I could take this HOME. 😩 I found out so many fascinating things today and I ran out of time. I will definitely be going back soon. #milwaukee #milwaukeehistory #milwaukeehistoricalsociety #thisoldhouse #shermanblvdfoursquare
Look what I found today at the the Milwaukee Historical Society!!!!! It was the second picture I found in the folder on, “Sherman Boulevard” and I actually squealed with delight. I’m pretty sure this picture is from the 30’s or 40’s so it’s not from right after the house was built but I’m so happy to have found it!!!!! #shermanblvdfoursquare #milwaukee #milwaukeehistory #milwaukeehistoricalsociety #historynerd
Pretty milk glass door handle on the inside of our kitchen door. I heard from a friend who was a tour guide at the Pabst that they would do glass in spaces where cleanliness was important because it was supposed to be more hygienic. The other side of this door is brass. The brass knob was in the public space where they would entertain. Public spaces are where you would invest money on the “finer things” so you could impress your guests. Little things like this are what make me love old houses. There’s a story everywhere. #oldhouselove #publicandprivatespaces #shermanblvdfoursquare #thisoldhouse #antiquehardware

Waldemar C. Wehe. The man who built our house. #milwaukee #milwaukeehistory #shermanblvdfoursquare
We realized after arriving that the archives/research section of the Milwaukee Historical Society is closed on Mondays. ☹️ We had the itch to do some historical digging so we went over to the Milwaukee Public Library instead. We couldn’t find any pictures of our house amongst images of Sherman Blvd but we got so close with this image. Swipe right and you’ll see the same view today. There’s a tiny yellow sign on the right and in front of that is our dumpster. 😜 So you can ALMOST see our house in the historical photo. #soclose #historichome #milwaukee #milwaukeehistory #milwaukeehistoricalsociety #thenandnow #historicphoto #shermanblvdfoursquare

Porch inspo. So dreamy. #shermanblvdfoursquare
After getting everything hauled out to the dumpster we have reclaimed our porch and I’m so in love. This space is beautiful (and massive). My in-laws came and scrubbed until it shined and now it smells lovely. I’m hoping to get a few moments to hit up the Milwaukee Historical Society records today to try to track down a historical exterior picture. In clearing out this space we realized that the original front door was curved on top.😍😭 I’m also curious to see some of the old landscaping. #shermanblvdfoursquare #Milwaukee #MilwaukeeHistory

This is our Rathskeller. There is groundwater that has been a problem for years that we will need to rectify. The previous owner had so much stuff this corner was hard to see before we owned the house. Generally speaking we’re not too worried. A sump pump and some drain tiles will go a long way to rectifying the problem and since we just had that installed in our old house we aren’t so intimidated by the process. The fun thing about these two pictures is that we have started the process of pulling the paneling down (not original). Behind the paneling we discovered the extent of the plaster damage. The plaster along the exterior wall is basically non existent. The GOOD news is that behind the plaster we have beautiful cream city brick! Zach and I both immediately knew that rather than put in plaster to bring this back to its original state we definitely want to leave some of this brick exposed. Cream city brick is such a piece of Milwaukee history. Our dream for this space is to have it be all about our awesome city. Incorporating cream city brick is just the most perfect addition. #ratheskeller #creamcitybrick #milwaukee #milwaukeehistory #shermanblvdfoursquare

Look what arrived today!! We have an insane amount of crap that we have pulled out of this house and in an attempt to save a little money we were waiting till we had most of it out before bringing a dumpster in. That means all the crap has been stored on our front porch. 😳 Tomorrow we haul it all into this big baby and I get to start reclaiming our pretty, enclosed porch space. 💃🏼 This stuff is stinky! I can’t wait to get it out of the house!!! #ByeFelicia #shermanblvdfoursquare #dumpsterday

We’re not even remotely close to having any “after” pictures in this process but this room is relatively livable and it is quite satisfying to see how far we’ve come. This is our current situation. Swipe right for the empty space when the house became ours and a few “before” listing pictures from the previous owner. The last picture is a swatch of what the color in this room will eventually be. Feels good to have some pretty and livable space even if it’s not “done.” #shermanblvdfoursquare #progresspicture #thisoldhouse #craftsmanhome #artsandcraftsmovement #prairiefoursquare

Sometimes having the original blueprints ends up just adding to our old house mysteries. See that circle there? That’s a toilet. It’s definitely not in the house and definitely never was (no plumbing). The cute little sink IS there though. Were toilets down a little landing like this a thing? (Our house was built in 1913 as a point of reference.) There are definite changes from the original blueprints but this was one we hadn’t spotted until tonight. We believe this was altered when Wehe made the decision to build the Rathskeller instead of the laundry room (well done there). It would make sense that he would have wanted this to be stairs that went all the way down so his company wouldn’t have to go through the private kitchen space. Old house mysteries are just all part of the fun. #oldhousemystery #thisoldhouse #shermanblvdfoursquare

Gorgeous lamp we collected ages ago with Edison lightbulbs from pre 1910. This is why we’re super nerds. Zach found a radio station that plays only music from the decade our house was built. So basically this will play all day every day in our house. 🤓🎼 #shermanblvdfoursquare

So here’s our best theory for this back porch turned interior room. It was done very early on and it was done with full commitment to convert it to an interior space. We believe that originally there was a step down from the house onto the porch. When the room was enclosed the floor was brought level with the interior house floor. The gap between the porch and new floor was used to run piping for this radiator to bring heat into the room. Removing the installed floor would be major work since it would require dealing with the radiator piping. Looks like we’ll be leaving the wood floor as is. #mysterysolved #shermanblvdfoursquare

New house mystery: We’ve continued to work on pulling up the rest of the carpet on the first floor and stairs. This is the front door entry. The original blueprints had a vestibule here that we were convinced was changed and removed from the design thus never originally built. Now that we’ve pulled up the carpet we see that there was indeed something here originally. The wood repair is super old and now I’m wondering if perhaps they originally built the vestibule and then decided to enclose the front porch (not enclosed on the original blueprints). Once the front porch was enclosed there wouldn’t have really been need for a vestibule. I like the space open so I don’t think we’ll be putting structures up here but I sure wish I knew what it originally looked like! #shermanblvdfoursquare #thisoldhouse #oldhousemystery #rehabaddict #hardwoodfloors

This is a terrible google street view picture of the house that I lived in until the age of 10. I was born the night my parents closed and got the key to this house. I have many memories of this old house. It was a beautiful prairie style foursquare built in 1925. After we bought the Sherman Blvd house my family members started saying how much it reminded them of this house. It hadn’t occurred to me but they were so right! This first house deeply shaped my ideal sense of “home.” Sensory experiences connect us to our memories. Being in the Sherman Blvd house has reminded me of the wood floor creaks from when I was a little girl. When I move in this house and hear the wood settle it’s such a comforting sound. #home #shermanblvdfoursquare #prairiestyle #foursquarehome #nostalgia

This is our General Electric Monitor Top refrigerator from 1934. We’ve had it for over ten years and it runs like a dream. It also weighs a TON so we’re waiting to move it over from the old house until we have the piano movers come. When I first posted this on Instagram on my personal account years ago I was one of the few hashtags for #monitortoprefrigerator It’s fun to see that there are quite a few now. It would be awesome if people would discover how amazing old appliances can be. Did you know that we have the technology to make lasting appliances? We just don’t do it because of a nasty little thing called “planned obsolescence.” Look it up. One of the many reasons Zach and I love old things so much is because they were built to last. This fridge came with a 30 year warranty! Can you imagine an appliance with a warranty like that today?! We’ve become a disposable society and in the process value for well made things has died. #originalisalwaysbetter #monitortoprefrigerator #monitortop #plannedobsolescence #shermanblvdfoursquare #thisoldhouse

Pretty painting we collected years ago while antiquing that will be beautiful in the house once the walls are painted green. #shermanblvdfoursquare

We have one full bath in this house on the second floor. The basement (off the Rathskeller) has a half bath with this incredible original porcelain sink and hardware. It’s full of character and I can’t wait for the day to come when we can pretty up this space for guests. #shermanblvdfoursquare #rehabaddict #thisoldhouse #oldhouselove

Sometimes when we have a question about the house we just pull out our original blueprints and discover the answer. We knew the house likely had a laundry chute but there was no sign of it on the second floor. Turns out it was next to the toilet in the bathroom. See that little “cc” on the plans? It goes all the way down to the basement cabinet. Clearly we’ll be restoring this when we redo the bathroom. Laundry chutes are awesome! #shermanblvdfoursquare #oldhousemystery #solved #laundrychute #thisoldhouse #originalblueprints

This is a photo from 1940 of a migrant woman entitled, “Uprooted”. While we keep plugging away on our house work the reality of our current situation is that we’re all a bit exhausted and overwhelmed right now. Uprooted is a very good description for our life at the moment. We’ve moved into the new house but we still have many conveniences not yet functioning. Our kiddos start school in one week and we’re completely unprepared. Our bodies ache from moving furniture all day and we still have our original house in total upheaval while we try to get it ready to list and sell. It’s a mad world over here. How do you home restorers handle the “uprootedness” of this process? I’d especially love some tips for how to help our kiddos feel less stressed. The reality is that this limbo is going to continue for awhile so we need to find ways to make it work. #shermanblvdfoursquare #homerestorationreality #homerestoration #uprooted @shorpyphotos

One more step toward making Sherman Blvd more livable. We’re taking this pretty stove over today. It’s been in my kitchen in the old house and I’m excited to see it in the new space. We’re also lugging a washer and dryer over since the ones the seller left don’t work. Hard living without a washer and dryer when you’re in the middle of potty training. 😳 #shermanblvdfoursquare

Staples are all out. These stairs are stunning. Sorry not sorry for all the stair pictures. #shermanblvdfoursquare #hardwoodfloors #homerestoration #rehabaddict
After a day of fun at the Bristol Renaissance Faire we came home and got back to work on these floors. Zach is cleaning up the living room with Restore A Finish while I pulled staples. We definitely had someone who was super staple gun trigger happy install the carpet on these. 😠 I know they are going to be gorgeous when we’re done and we’ll be so thankful we did all this hard work. 💪🏽 #hardwoodfloors #restoreafinish #thisoldhouse #shermanblvdfoursquare

Lots of staples to still remove and padding to scrape off but these stairs are quite gorg. So much beauty in this house that has been hidden for too long. #shermanblvdfoursquare #hardwoodfloors #thisoldhouse #hardwoodstairs
We did it! Kids slept great. I’m sitting in the yellow chair having coffee in our beautiful home. I’ve literally dreamed of this moment. #shermanblvdfoursquare #home

A pretty corner. It will be even nicer when we get the walls painted. #shermanblvdfoursquare

Second floor. Almost exactly the same. The room designated as the “library” will be one of our son’s bedrooms. #shermanblvdfoursquare #thisoldhouse #oldhouselove #blueprints #rehabaddict
First floor. The entrance changed a bit but we believe they were original changes. Overall this floor is essentially the same as this plan. #shermanblvdfoursquare #oldhouselove #rehabaddict #thisoldhouse #blueprints
This is the basement plan. The final build was very different from this. The place where the “laundry” is listed ended up being built as the Rathskeller. There is an original fireplace in the room which is not in the blueprints. The area under what we now know is the back porch was not originally dug out on these plans but in the house there is an original room that we believe was used as cold storage for beer as it is off the Rathskeller. There is also a full basement room under the front porch. It was disappointing not seeing the rathskeller on the original plans but we are confident that is what it is and that it was original to the house. The story we’ve told ourselves is that Wehe saw Mader’s and decided he wanted one of those in his basement as it was also built in 1913. 😂#shermanblvdfoursquare #rathskeller #oldhouselove #rehabaddict #thisoldhouse #blueprints

Rear exterior view. You can see more of the original porch that is now enclosed. #shermanblvdfoursquare #oldhouselove #thisoldhouse #rehabaddict #blueprints
Side exterior view. This was how we discovered that the back room off the dining room was originally an exterior porch. It is now enclosed. We believe it was enclosed in the 20’s or 30’s by the original owner. #shermanblvdfoursquare #blueprints #rehabaddict #oldhouselove #thisoldhouse
Since we have our original blueprints (scroll down on my page for details on discovering them) I wanted to post pictures. I’m gonna do separate posts so they are easier to view. This is the front exterior. The porch on these plans was not enclosed. We are pretty sure it was enclosed when built if not very soon after. #blueprints #oldhouselove #rehabaddict #thisoldhouse #shermanblvdfoursquare #1913

I am officially obsessed with our floors. 😍🧡😍 #hardwoodfloors #thisoldhouse #shermanblvdfoursquare
After we found the original blueprints to the house I contacted the historical society to ask them to add the architects to the registry of our home. Yesterday these books came in the mail from the historical society and they are 👌🏽 It has been particularly fun reading about the incredible history of Sherman Blvd. Such a rich legacy we’ve attached ourselves to! #shermanblvdfoursquare #milwaukeehistory #milwaukeehome #historichome #historicpreservation #thisoldhouse

My Aunt just gave us this book and I’m already drooling. Love that little corner bookshelving in the second picture. And all the books and wood and clean lines in the last picture. 😍#artsandcraftsmovement #shermanblvdfoursquare #thisoldhouse #homeinspo

Found this chair for $25 bucks. I had no idea at the time that I would be painting our master bedroom Oceanside blue (by Sherwin Williams). This yellow is the accent color for the bedroom and I had totally forgotten that I had purchased this until we unearthed it in the garage today. I can’t WAIT to put this in our bedroom! #itsperfect #accentcolor #shermanblvdfoursquare #sherwinwilliams #oceanside

I found this piece on Craigslist before we had even made an official offer on the house and I fell in love. Once we knew the deal would all go through we snatched it up right away. It’s been sitting in our garage and today it got moved into the new house. It’s from a c. 1880ish house. We plan to put it in the kitchen. Seeing it in the house today totally confirmed that this was a very solid purchase. It’s going to be perfect in this house. It’s massive and has four original glass doors for the top piece that sits on top of the main counter. 😍#shermanblvdfoursquare #kitchen #thisoldhouse

Hubs and a dear friend finished getting all the tile up today. This kitchen floor is ready for refinishing on Monday! It takes a village! So thankful for all the amazing helpers we’ve had jumping in to this process with us. #homerestoration #thisoldhouse #hardwoodfloors #shermanblvdfoursquare #progress
