These pups made me so proud today! We received several compliments on how well they listen and respect the boundaries of other dogs and people on the trail. My goal for every hike is to leave a positive impression on those we encounter, and today we hit it out of the park 🤘🏽🐾💕

My running place was gorgeous today!
One for the win! No off leash doggies lead me to the ground, jumped on me or took me off the trail, oh wait! One did, as usual! I would love it if pet owners acknowledge that their doggies don’t just listen to them when there is so much stimulus around, when the trail says: dogs on leash only, please respect that. I don’t go running in your dog’s off leash area, so don’t let your dog off leash where people run! Share the trail being conscious of others ✨

I took the Mrs @anam_0odham up to Sourh Mountain to make out looking out over the Phoenix skyline like you would back in high school. We walked a trail instead. #nature #outdoors #trails #southmountain #toyota #toyota4runner #onyourleft #sharethetrail

(Continued from previous post.) And lastly, scenario three. It’s the most complex. Unlike number one, where the person is on it and kind, or two, on it but not as kind, the third type of dog owner doesn’t, or is unable to, restrain their dog. Maybe they aren’t paying attention, or maybe they call but their dog doesn’t come, or maybe they smile and just say, “he’s friendly!” like that changes the fact that mine isn’t.
»
Whatever the case, inevitably the strange dog runs right up to mine, and sniffs, tries to play, or starts to reciprocate her aggression. Isla gets wild, lunging, barking, snapping. And I’m left standing there, holding her up half off the ground by her collar, trying to manage some OTHER persons dog as well as my own, while they run up to try to regain the control they never really had.
»
This typically lasts anywhere from 30 seconds to three minutes while they get ahold of their dogs collar, and it’s painstaking the entire time, every time. By the end of it, most people aren’t smiling. Most walk off without a word, either angry with me (I assume), their dog, or both.
»
And me? I’m left incredibly frustrated. Frustrated at Isla, at people who don’t leash their dogs when I tell them she’s not friendly, and at the wild card that is a rescue dog. She brings so much joy to my life, but also complicates the activities I want to share with her.
»
But at least the first two scenarios aren’t so bad. At least 66% of the time, we can continue on without too much bother and get back to trotting through the brush and absorbing that fresh mountain air.

Here’s a how a hike generally goes:
»
Isla, frolicking in the brush.
»
Me, taking in the scenery while keeping eyes, ears, spidy-senses alert for approaching people.
»
When I spot a person, I immediately assess if they a) have a dog, and b) are paying attention to said dog. If they don’t have a dog, I’ll whistle for Isla to come near me and we’ll pass without fanfare. She’s not really into getting pet by strangers.
»
If they do have a dog, I call Isla. She has about half a second to indicate she’s heard me, and then I’ll tone her with the noise feature of her shock collar if she doesn’t. Another split second opportunity, then I’ll “buzz” her. It always works. She comes to me. I put her back on the leash and simultaneously shout out to the oncoming dog owner, “my dog isn’t friendly!” This whole process lasts just seconds.
»
Then the encounter usually goes one of three ways. First, the person contains their dog, we pass on the trail, Isla barks and lunges, I smile nervously and try to communicate that she’s a rescue and we’re working on it, “thank you, enjoy your hike” etc etc, and the person SMILES and says, no problem! Pretty dog, and good luck! Or, I have a dog I have to leave at home, so I know how you feel!
»
Man, those are the greatest encounters. Kindness, understanding, encouragement. Some strangers even offer to let our dogs meet to give Isla an opportunity to socialize. Even though she’s making a scene, they don’t blame me or the dog. How amazing is that?
»
Then there is scenario two, which is very similar to the first in that the person restrains their dog quickly, but in passing I get not-so-friendly vibes. Maybe it’s my own ego and embarrassment talking, but I feel like some people think I shouldn’t be on the trail at all. That I am a bad dog owner. And actually I once had one man literally yell at me, aggressively, that I should keep my dog at home and out of public places. I fail to see how never leaving the house would fix our problem, but obviously if you’re yelling at strangers out in the woods, you’ve got your own issues. (Continued in next post.)

This nugget is at doggy day care today, and I wonder... Will she meet new dogs? Will she start a fight? Or tolerate the sniffs? Hold still until they move on? Or just trot away? And what’s it like from her eyes? Is she scared? Does she lash out because she’s gotten in one too many dog fights? Is she taking the offense to avoid the defense? Or is she just inherently mean? Was she socialized as a puppy? Did she ever have doggy role models? Does she even know dogs can actually play together, or is that concept as lost on her as it seems? Was she chained up outside? How often did she get loose and run around town? What was she doing every time animal control picked her up, calling her by her name because it happened so often? Was she picking fights, or getting picked on? I sure wish I knew.
»
So when a new dog at day care approaches her, is she feeling fear? Anxiety? Apprehension? Uncertainty?
»

One of Isla’s favorite things to do is to run across the tundra. It’s in her blood, and I’m willing to bet it goes back generations.
»
But this year she only got to do that when I could be sure there weren’t other dogs around. And even still I’m on high alert, always ready to call her back, thankful for her good recall, and an e-collar I use as backup. Backup in case she chooses to ignore me, or we run into a bear, or a moose, or (what I honestly worry about most) another dog whose recall isn’t good or whose owner isn’t paying attention.
»
I wish everyone picked up on my subtle and not-so-subtle cues to keep their dog away from mine, but they don’t, or they do but they can’t get their dog to mind. Whatever the scenario, it just adds to the list of reasons why it’s imperative that I keep working on socializing my dog. Why it’s my responsibility to do all that I can to show Isla that she can trust me to “handle it,” as our trainer says. Whatever scenario “it” is.
»
First step, small changes in the home and a life on-leash. As much as it pains me, the open tundra will have to wait.

Hi there! This is my dog, Isla. (Pronounced ee-slah.) I adopted her from her birthplace alongside the Arctic Ocean when she was nearly five years old, and we moved down to Anchorage, Alaska nine months later.
»
Doesn’t she look sweet? Just look at those eyes. Those dainty feet. Her black rimmed ears. Gah! I just love her! But the truth is, while she is sweet most of the time, she’s not when a strange dog comes near. Instead, she becomes aggressive. It’s a behavior problem I thought could be easily fixed when I discovered it (laughable now), but man, was I wrong.
»
Trying to socialize my dog has been a long, emotionally grueling journey, and still, a year and a half in, we’re no where near there. And honestly, I’m slowly learning to accept that there will likely never be a “there.” We will have to work on this forever.
»
Recently, my dog and I started to see a trainer (he’s brilliant) and he suggested I keep a journal I can reflect back on. I thought that maybe by doing that here, in a public space, I could share the process, hopefully the progress, and also share my story as someone who doesn’t have a “perfect” dog (whatever that is), but who still wants to take my dog along on some adventures (read: all of them) without risking anydog’s well being.
»
At the very least, I’m allowing myself an outlet to navigate the feelings of frustration, embarrassment, & (especially) love my dog invokes in me. Best case scenario, this page could create discussion and offer insight. Maybe through my own transparency, we can all learn a little more about sharing the trail with our four-leggeds. Even the imperfect ones. 🐾

@run.run.run03 応援ありがとうございましたー! @frank_goodish これからもおなしゃーっす! @hxx_lilm Thank you, I love you.

¿Y tú?, ¿has encontrado tu Flow? #lookingforflow #singletrackmania 📸de @gusvicocrespo

È strano vagare nella nebbia!
Solo è ogni cespuglio e pietra,
Nessun albero vede l’altro,
Ognuno è solo (…)
Strano, vagare nella nebbia!
Vivere è essere soli.
Nessuno uomo conosce l’altro,
Ognuno è solo.

Hi folks! As we have more and more new people joining us for group runs and participating in events, we would like to remind you about the Yellow Dog Campaign (Shout out to @monctondogrunners for kick starting this within the @maritimeharnessdogsports !). Yellow Dogs are dogs in need of space (DINOS). This does not mean they are aggressive dogs. More often these are dogs who have issues of fear, a recent surgery, are in training; are working or in service, or for other reasons specific to the dog or their human counterpart. In general, we don’t recommend humans or dogs approaching dogs in harness as they are working and need to remain focused. If you are a spectator, competitor, or volunteer at race or club events events, please be mindful of working dogs’ need for space to do their job properly.

Note, some of our members also use an orange or yellow harness to indicate their need for space.

We will have yellow ribbons available at the registration table Saturday. Thank you for your courtesy and consideration! #yellowdogproject #givespace #askfirst #workingdogs
