Today is a no makeup, dirty hair, comfy clothes kind of day.
I had a really busy weekend and Monday and, while I loved every minute of it, the action of it all caught up with me. Yes, I am currently dealing with a “I did a lot” hangover.
AND THAT IS OKAY.
One of the biggest reasons I started #boringactsofrecovery is because I always felt guilty for taking the time I needed to recharge my batteries. I felt like I was failing as a person because I couldn’t keep up with those around me. But that’s just not true and the guilt is so unnecessary. 
EVERYBODY needs to make time for self care. Some need a little more (especially those of us with disabled bodies and mental illnesses), some need a little less. The time spent isn’t what’s important. It’s the way it makes you feel afterwards. Not the guilt and the “I should be doing something productive”, but the energy gained and the focus you find.
So today, without any shame, I slept in, stayed in my pjs for half the day, fell asleep again watching Say Yes to the Dress, and just had some me time. I also treated myself to the fancy, expensive kind of ice cream because I felt like it! #edrecoverywin 💫🍨🙌 If you’re feeling drained or unhappy, please take a minute to check in with yourself. Chances are you just need a minute (or an hour or a day) of self care. Because remember, self care isn’t selfish - it’s ESSENTIAL.

We can sometimes make assumptions about strangers. I know I’ve been guilty. Today I’m the mom at the water park sitting with her feet up, reading a book and checking my phone instead of in the water with my kids. Oh how I’ve silently judged the mom like me. But this isn’t the whole picture. The truth is my daughter brought friends and they are having a blast. And my son is headed to the arcade where he works here to use up tokens he’s found. And I’m nursing a headache and have had my anxiety flare up today as I face a week full of big things. And the reading is helping me wrestle with a few things and the sitting is helping me breathe. 
Single mama, all the grace if you need a moment when it looks to the world around you like you should be doing more. And my deepest apologies to all the moms I may have silently judged without knowing the whole story.

I believe that the process of self-love is always a work-in-progress. However, some areas are easier than others, and self-esteem is one of the harder domains for me.

Learning that high self-esteem isn’t the gold standard (see last post) has made this journey a bit easier, but there are still some days I worry that my self-esteem and anxiety will team up and impede my self-love & mental health.

One of these days was our wedding day. Although by this time in my life I was active in pairing my awareness and skills to combat my own negative messages, I knew that the pressure of the day could lure out that inner critic. I tapped into my motivation to empower me to take charge of my mental health.

I allowed myself the ability to plan in the months prior, and to slowly release control in the days leading up to our big day. 📉

I entrusted my inner circle, and sought their positive vibes often, you can ask them! 😝

On the day of, I was intentional about carving out time to myself practice solo sunrise yoga. 🕉

Throughout the day I allowed myself to immerse in the present. 💛

Although you cannot control it all, you CAN manage your self-esteem.

I watered my white bird of paradise yesterday, knowing how intense the sun would be. I left it in my bathtub overnight.
I woke up today to find this. I was shocked, having no clue the new leaf was ready to open up and face the day.
I guess the same goes for life. Sometimes there’s something deep within us, which we want to let out. Open to the world, show up, be whole and present. It’s funny, because that also builds up and grows within us. And it also springs open when you least expect it.  Just as the leaf will face new risks, we do as well. But like the plant, we use it as an opportunity to continue growing, and eventually become large enough to shelter and comfort those still developing their roots.

| BALANCE | It means something different to everyone; I’m starting to find out what it means to me. I don’t have a flat stomach or abs not because I can’t, but because right now in my life I would rather have my balance lean a little more towards the indulgent side. I’m really focusing on eat intuitively based on what makes my body feel good. I’m changing my view point, seeing dieting not as a punishment but rather as a way of fueling my body to feel energized. Novel, I know. With that being said I was still worried about this past weekend. 4 days is a lot of time to be in a swim suit indulging in yummy food and drinks…would I look fat in photos, would I come back having gained 10 pounds, would my progress be derailed? Of course not. The beauty of finding genuine balance is you start to live that balanced lifestyle no matter where you are. You learn to listen to your body. I found myself overindulging this weekend, feeling sick and backing off the next day. My body was self-regulating. I still ate pizza, pasta, fried food but I found myself having smaller portions, snacking less in between meals and not late night snacking as much as I used to. This picture is of my first vacation that was for me. Living on the West Coast with my family on the East Coast, I usually went home. But this time, I needed something different. As much as I love my family, it was not a relaxing vacation as I rushed around to see everyone.

I booked a retreat in Nicaragua and it felt scandalous. It meant that I would miss a whole week of work and the first day of a second week. Really, it shouldn't be such a big deal. But it felt like it. As I was the manager of a retreat location, I should be there to welcome our guests on their first day. How will their experience be? Fortunately, me team was awesome and supported me.

I went away. There was no cell service or internet. I read. I swam in the ocean. Attempted to surf. I was in bed by 9pm. Up to run for 6am. I ate amazing food.

I let go of my life.

There were no must do's. 
_______________________________
It was the best thing I ever did for myself.

More women need to feel this at least once in your life.

How do you relax and de-stress? A calming bath, reading a book and meditation are some of my favourite ways to unwind🧘🏽‍♀️🛁📖
I’ve recently discovered how great it feels to make a list of the little things that make me happy. Seems like having that reminder of good times and happy experiences can be fantastic for your mood. I really recommend that you try it too! Here are some of mine:

Plants. Being surrounded by trees, flowers or foliage of any kind makes me feel calm and contented. Our house is basically overflowing with plants and I go to Botanical Gardens and woods whenever I can.

Cooking with James. We both love cooking, and attempting complicated recipes with him is so much fun. And always delicious because we’re pretty good at it too!

Baths. Urghhhhh love a good bath. A lengthy skincare routine, lots of exfoliation, and then a long soak in the dark with some music playing.

Writing. This is a bit of a weird one because although writing is my passion I find it stressful and feel insecure about it...but I still love it. I guess conflicting emotions are all just part of being human!

Hiking. I’m so happy that James and I are able to hike together because looking back on the ridiculous mountains we’ve climbed, remembering the scrambles and the weather and the feeling like we can’t do it (and the naps we have in the car after we get back down) are some of my most treasured memories.

Ok, so don’t roll your eyes at me for being a loser, go and make your own list! It feels great, I promise!!

After struggling with a chronic illness for years, I had tried every elimination diet out there in a desperate attempt to feel better. I had written exercise off as something that only healthy people can do. And I assumed that all of the energy I gave to my family, kids, students was just that - all that I had to give. 
Man was I ❗️ WRONG ❗️ When Alana Marletta LeBlanc posted an invite to her free week of clean eating and recipe sharing, I was at a point when my eating habits had gotten away from me and I was on the eat-whatever-I-want-whenever-I-want diet. And I hadn’t exercised in years.  It wasn’t working out so well for me. 
I’m not sure what made me say yes that day, as I’d scrolled past her posts many times before. But I figured a free week of recipe sharing couldn’t hurt. And I was NOT planning to spend any money or commit to any crazy exercise programs!! But after only a week of motivation from Alana, it was clear to me how desperately I needed to focus on myself!  I didn’t know it, but I was starving for that self love and my body and mind needed self care. I didn’t think exercise was a real option for me, so I figured I’d do some light yoga and see what happened. 
Here I am, 8 months later. I don’t think I need to tell you how this all worked out for me 😆 
Guys, whatever has stopped you from saying no, be stronger. You are worth more than your fears and excuses!  You can do HARD things. Loving yourself is WORTH IT. 
I know saying yes is HARD. I know you have a thousand doubts. I SO GET IT. You could say maybe to me. You can tell me that you need a change or you might be interested. We could just talk about it.

I don't know about you, but I definitely fall into the trap of being transactional with experiences, e.g. "Will this or that event help me 'get to the next level' 'in my business?"

Ugh. That mode of thinking stopped serving me a while ago. My new gut checks: "Will this broaden my perspective? Add some variety to my week? Deepen my relationships?" And even better... "Will doing this help enrich other people's lives?"

I think it comes back to trusting that whatever decisions are in front of me will somehow become a brushstroke in a larger picture I can't quite see yet. 🎨

I don’t know about you but I definitely feel guilty about calling in sick...I hate leaving my team short handed. BUT what I’ve learned over the past 7 years of motherhood is if you don’t take care of yourself, your body will force you to rest. 🤒😷

I used to be afraid to go out with friends on a Friday night (don’t even ask me to go out on a Saturday because that means Ill lose precious sleeping time before the work week comes back - yeah, my thoughts right?!) because I thought “what if I have a panic attack?!” Then I’d have to try so hard to reassure myself that I’d be around people who would care but also didn’t want to ruin their night. .

It’s sooooooo hard having a social life when you’re in a constant state of panic. Thinking you’re having a heart attack at 22 sounds ridiculous but I’ve thought it MULTIPLE TIMES. .
.
I was so scared of being judged too.
.
.
That’s when the depression crept in. Because of the isolation. I didn’t want to go out and ruin someone’s night. I didn’t want to go into work since the commute was an hour and a half one way. I would tell myself things like “it’s ok, you’re in the city where the best hospitals are anyway” ... it got a little out of hand to say the least.

.
How INSANE is that? How CRAZY were my thoughts?! Actually...they weren’t so crazy after all. Considering 18.1% (Facts: ADAA) of the American population have anxiety - so ... it’s actually normal...
.
.
And it’s sad. It’s sad for me to think I was there. I was never the one to be depressed. I always focused on lifting others up I forgot to lift myself up. Until the point it got sooooo bad I knew this couldn’t be it. I knew I lived life before anxiety & depression consumes my life. And I’m not saying I’m perfect now but I am saying that there are numerous things that took me from a 10 to a 2 on the anxiety scale. .

On the other side of those panic attacks are finally freedom. I love meeting new people now. I’m happy to grab lunch or get drinks with coworkers and friends. I want to go to as many networking events as possible! It’s polar opposite now.

Spent 10 minutes watching the clouds while I was waiting for a bus ☁️ 💙Much more relaxing than having my head down checking my phone which is what I normally do. Not sure why I bother when I’ve just checked it 5 minutes previously before leaving the house 🙄

Work is up to date so I’ve decided to make the most of the last couple of childfree days before the school holidays. Today = clothes shopping and cleaning. Tomorrow = getting a hair cut. It’s funny how those things are sometimes rubbish experiences (shopping/haircut) or in the case of cleaning, something I often just can’t face! But this week, those are my three priorities for the time I’ve got for #selfcare 💚💜 Thankfully, shopping has been reasonably successful so I’m off to tackle the kitchen and bathroom now 💪🏻
