Happy Monday🤗!! Who’s looking forward to the dry week ahead of us??
The habits we have outside of the gym or couple minutes/hours we exercise a day dictate our health and overall progress more than what we do during workout sessions.

Movement is an essential part of health and will influence more than just weight loss/gain. There’s so much more going on beneath the surface than we tend to realize, a healthy body weight is only the start!

Personally since summer has been over I’ve been a lot more sedentary due to the weather changing, sitting for long hours to travel to college then sitting all day in college. These factors out weigh the fact that I workout 4-5 days a week.

The recommended daily steps to be taken is 10,000. This seems like a high number but by making simple changes it’s achievable. Students & people who work in jobs where your they sit for the majority of time are at risk of the disadvantages related to a sedentary lifestyle. Phones now have pedometers installed so use your phone or other wearable technology to track your steps and make healthier decisions today!!🚶🏿‍♀️

An easier way to tackle this health concern is to begin small. 🔹️Find moments🔹️ Small moments throughout the day to increase your level of activity. Parking further away, taking the stairs, a quick walk around the block before 'down time' in the evenings.

Additionally, find small ways to decrease the level of inactivity that exists. At every red light, remind yourself to sit tall and turn on your tummy, when working, every 15 minutes at your desk, stand up, stretch overhead, then get right back to it. ✔

This is the first time I've had an 8/8 hours active on a weekday. I took a personal day today because I just wasn't 100% this morning and look, I moved all day long.

Even though I work out after work, I feel like it's not enough to mitigate the damage sitting in a chair all day does. Like, is it possible to undo a day's worth of sitting with an hour in the gym?

I've finally made eating healthy and exercising one way or another part of my life, just like other adult things that I do whether or not I feel like it. I've said it a million times but after wanting it forever it finally clicked and it just feels right.

Één van de meest belangrijke bevindingen van de “Maastricht studie” is (zie pic 3), dat ondanks dat individuen veel cardio als sport beoefenden, het risico op metabool syndroom en DM type 2 toch nog hoog is, indien deze personen er een sedentaire levensstijl op nahielden 😱
Dus je kan aannemen dat je gezond bezig bent door regelmatig te joggen, maar als je de rest van de dag op je kont zit dan blijft er een aanzienlijk risico bestaan dat je op termijn toch “metabole problemen” ontwikkeld 😡

The upper fibres originate from the base of your skull, Occipital & C1-C7 and insert onto the lateral 1/3 of the Clavicle, middle fibres C7-T5, inserting on the outer edge & spine of the Scapula and lower fibres T5-T12, with insertion onto the medial edge of the scapula spine

The main movements of the Traps are extension & lateral flexion of the neck, elevation - depression - retraction of the shoulder joint, as seen in pics

Whilst most of the #posture issues around the shoulders can be attributed to bigger anterior muscles, the Traps can become very inactive, similar to Glute Max in the hips. When they’re not used regularly and for what they’re intended to be, they can become lazy and start to force work and load onto smaller muscles, causing deeper shoulder issues -
When we consider a #seated position that a high % of people spend their time in daily, the Traps are constantly relaxed / switched off for extended periods. Once this happens every #movement of your shoulder becomes technically incorrect due to the Traps not working, then over time and #repitition your shoulder starts to wear faster and cause #pain -
Sounds simple enough and most of this can be attributed to #sedentarylifestyle - dominant anterior based work, excessive life stressors and our desk #driving work habits, causing more problems than anything else you may be doing. Something I’ve been working on more this year, especially the last few months, is my back. The importance of posture became more important to me while I was pregnant and postpartum, and I mainly focused on restrengthening my core after having a baby. However, I neglected my backside for years pre-pregnancy. So now I’ve made my posterior chain a priority in my training, even the awkward stuff I sucked at and avoided in the past that I knew I needed to improve on (especially with strengthening my upper back/rear delts), and I’ve definitely noticed a difference...

When I look at the pic on the left, I cringe for several reasons, but I’m sharing anyway mainly because I couldn’t even tell how poor my posture was- I really felt like I was standing straight for that progress pic, and I wasn’t new to proper posture at all! This is what daily activities like sitting at a desk can do to one’s posture over time, and why training to offset this is so valuable.

Visibly, my back’s taken on a better shape as I’m training smarter and shedding some excess stubborn fat, and my desk-job posture (i.e. the typical shoulder hunching) has improved as I’ve also worked on some shoulder and t-spine mobility as well. My lower back has also made progress as it’s stronger as well, and a strong core and back is great for protecting the spine.

But guys, this is so important for practical stuff in every day life- my back doesn’t get as tired and strained giving my kid a bath, and I’m able to maintain proper posture for longer periods of time carrying her. And of course, better posture and movement means better overall training and feeling better in general! 🙌🏼 Stop neglecting the backside just because you don’t see it as much in the mirror, and practice better posture! 👏🏼👍🏼

I developed a really bad posture after the birth of my son because I sat around a lot, lost all core strength and generally got really out of shape. Posture really suffers when we don’t move enough and spend a lot of time sitting. After a while it can put everything out of alignment and throw off our body’s natural balance. One of the most important things we can do for posture and alignment is to work our back muscles. The focus of most of my workouts at the moment is my back! I’m using a stretchy band in this photo and there are so many variations of this exercise. You can do it sitting, standing, single or double arm. There really is a row for everyone no matter what stage of your fitness journey you’re in. So if you sit a lot this is one of the best exercises you can do for your posture! A mom can be tired because she is doing many things at once. 
I wish I had this @FlexiSpot_SitStandMove DeskBike back in the college days, so I could do some exercise while doing homework.
But I'm glad I got it now so whenever I have a little free time, I'll hop on it and finish whatever work I need to finish either with my notebook or my laptop.

3️⃣Make sure your computer screen is high enough so you’re not slouching to see.

4️⃣Get in routine of working out before or after sitting for long periods! Often when you sit a lot you develop weaker & tighter hips which can lead to other problems so it’s important to strengthen & stretch!

It’s Friday!!! Aka stretch-day lol Why should you stretch? When? How often? Ever wonder? I did! So I wrote about it. It’s not up on the blog yet, but it will be..if you like and comment below 😌. It’s an important component to your fitness. 
Plus, fitness is not about appearance. It’s about your bodies ability to function, to do things with ease and without injury throughout the day. So when to stretch? -1️⃣As soon as you wake up!.
- 2️⃣lightly before a workout, but thoroughly after your workout (you’re muscles are warm and it’s safer to do the deeper stretches). - 3️⃣if you’ve been sedentary for a long time (like many students of office jobs)..gets blood moving. 
How often, how long? - 4️⃣the recommendation are similar to strength training. 3-4x/week. Hold the stretch for 20-30 seconds and repeat for a total of 60 seconds. But personally the more you can do it the better. 
Stretching not only improves your range of motion, and athletic performance. It also reduces the risk of injury!!!.

Your joints are not supposed to be stiff and good range of motion is crucial to avoid injury especially if you’re about to fall and need good hip range to get your footing. Also important if you play sports that require your hips to open up like when kicking a soccer ball. Let’s not forget..daily stuff, like being a mom and having to twist in weird ways to catch your kid before they fall..lol just saying it could help.. or how about just not feeling pain when your body has to do a weird movement? All good things! All thanks to stretching and keeping those joints soft and lax. So...Never forget to stretch...even if you look like a total dummy doing it..kinda like me 😂. .

By day, and any time when I’m not running around the hills or eating cakes and burgers, I work in medical research - specifically stroke. I look for ways to improve outcomes post-stroke and actually involve patients directly in developing / designing interventions to do this (we call it co-production / co-design 😜). The idea of involving people who are affected seems rationale, but it is a relatively new approach and not something that is always implemented into medical research. At the moment, I’m working on sedentary behaviour post-stroke and designing an intervention to reduce / break up these behaviours. The first article (editorial) was published in the International Journal of Stroke a while ago - link below and in bio, if you’re interested. ☺️

It's difficult to calculate calorie needs because of many variables. For example a heavy training person isn't someone who plays basketball for fun every once in a while. These are competitive athletes that practice and play just about every day  on a sports team so their calorie requirements are pretty high.

During my summer recovery I’ve been able to do a lot of reading #sedentarylifestyle. This book was a great look at different forces internal and external that hold people back from being lean, healthy humans that lots of us aspire to be. The take aways that I found in this book (1) we are not more prone to obesity than our ancestors (2) while human activities levels have decreased overtime (desk jobs, automation, transportation, etc.) and more compelling reason for increasing obesity is the change in our food environment. (3) cheap, processed, low-satiety, high dopamine rewarding foods are great for food companies and bad for food consumers. Finally (4) healthy eating is both easy and hard. It’s hard in that it involves planning, accountability, knowledge, and some restraint...but easy in that setting up little changes can lead to great outcomes. Changes I plan to implement (sorry @matt.cormack): keep only what you plan to eat on hand for the week (planning). Limit food items that are sold in a box. Prioritize sleep. Water > other liquids.
