Oh wow I am stoked! In 1995 I read about a film called Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre in Fangoria and got very excited to see it. Due to studio problems after a limited theatrical run the movie was shelved. A few years later it appeared on home video bearing the title Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation. And it wasn’t very good. In fact it was nowhere near the movie I had read about. I found out years later that the version released on home video had been cut up from the original version. I never thought I would see the original, well thanks to Scream Factory I have and this is a completely different feeling film. One I would actually recommend! One that changed my rating of this movie from a 3 to an 8. This is the only version I will ever watch after I watch the inferior cut one more time to compare notes. So cool to live in a time that someone deemed this worthy to track down and release. Pick it up if you get a chance. #texaschainsawmassacre#thereturnofthetexaschainsawmassacre#texaschainsawmassacrethenextgeneration#reneezellweger#matthewmcconaughey#leatherface#screamfactory#bluray#fangoria
It's hard to believe that this film was a box office bomb during its premiere, especially considering how well loved and revered it is today. For me, this was one of the first horror films I saw and it scared the shit out of me. My stepbrother and I would watch this film at least once a month ever since we were teenagers until his death a few years ago. This is the film that really grabbed my attention into horror and scifi. Not only does it have groundbreaking special effects and lots of gore, it's also scary to think that the person next to you, even a friend could be something else altogether. It's the thought of isolation, you're already feeling boxed in and going crazy and there's no escape. Not only that, but the feeling of loss of identity. Are you actually you or something else? How about the guy next to you. Kurt Russell is an absolute badass in this movie and takes charge, but still feels like the everyman you can root for, not some over the top a ton hero. Dean Cundy's lighting really helps set the mood and makes things eerie along with Ennio Morricone's soundtrack, paired with the simple John Carpenter theme. There are so many memorable moments, including one of the few effective jump scares in cinema history, the blood test scene. I still sit in anticipation during that scene. This is one of my absolute favourite films. #nowwatching#nowplaying#thething#johncarpenter#kurtrussell#wilfordbrimley#keithdavid#richarddysart#universalpictures#shoutfactory#screamfactory#horror#80shorror#scifi#bluray#bluraycollection#moviereview#filmreview#cinephile#1982#goonreviewsthething
