This is an image taken with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) at a magnification of 12000x and was one of the runners-up in the JEOL Image Contest held in 2017. The image depicts manganese oxide platelets at micrometer scales (1 millionth of a meter) procured with an SEM and colored with photoshop.

Silicon diffraction in a scanning transmission electron microscope 🔬.

The sample here is single-crystal silicon. In a single-crystal material, the atoms are arranged in a very regular pattern, which is called the crystal lattice. The lattice bends incident electrons along very specific directions. This process is called diffraction, and produces the distinct circles you see in the image; each circle is a diffracted beam. From the position and intensity of these diffracted beams we can extract information about the structure of the sample!

Just how small are the microfibers shedding from our clothing? 
A 2016 publication out of The Marine Biology and Ecology Research Centre (MBERC), School of Marine Science and Engineering, Plymouth University found that the microfibers washing out into our waterways average in size ranged between 11.9 μm and 17.7 μm in diameter, and 5.0 mm and 7.8 mm in length. They 
speculate that for every load of wash, over 700,000 fibers could be released from an average 6 kg wash load of acrylic fabric.

#funfact : Podocytes are the specific, specialised "filtration" cells in the nephron that are the FIRST STEP towards segregating the waste-loaded whole blood brought to the glomerular  capillaries from all over the body into:

👉 The "Afferent Arteriole" is the tiny blood vessel through which blood loaded with metabolic wastes enters another tangled mesh of tinier blood-vessels called the "Glomerulus".
.
👉"Glomerulus" is contained in a hollow shell of renal tissue called the "Bowman's Capsule" (shown here after slicing in half).
.
Part of the incoming blood is filtered of wastes and toxins into the space between the Glomerulus and Bowman's capsule, leaving plasma proteins and blood cells within the glomerulus to be carried out by the Efferent Arteriole.
.
👉This blood ends up providing the much-needed nutrition to kidney cells itself through "Peritubular capillaries" before exhausting it's Oxygen & joining veins on the way out towards lungs to get an oxygen refill.
.
👉Getting back to the "blood-filtrate" that has entered the capsular space in the nephron, it now passes-on further to the tube system for mineral and fluid absorption along with further waste-elimination.

Proximal convoluted tubule, Loop of Henle and Distal convoluted tubule sound fancy for parts of a minute urine-forming tube in our kidneys. However this is where all the magic happens.

I wanted to include the source material for my public art, Metallographic Cosmos at the George R. Brown Convention Center. These are the pieces of welding spatter found on the floor of sculptor Meredith Butch Jack's studio. I used a scanning electron microscope provided by my former employer Stress Engineering Services to create SEM images of this welding spatter. Experiments conducted at Berkeley Lab helped to confirm that samples of interplanetary particles – collected from Earth’s upper atmosphere and believed to originate from comets – contain dust leftover from the initial formation of the solar system.
