Yesterday I went to Monteverde Restaurant and Pastifico 🇮🇹 I finally got to try @chefsarahjayne homemade pasta 🍝 She won Best Chef Great Lakes @beardfoundation in 2017 👩‍🍳 On TV, she was runner up @bravotopchef and also competed on Iron Chef Gauntlet 📺 This is the Burrata starter with #prosciutto and #finocchiona 🧀🥖 Scroll ➡️ for the famous Cacio Whey Pepe with added truffles 🍄 It was made with handmade bucatini, pecorino Romano, #ricotta whey, and four peppercorn blend 🍽 Great to see you @strangefoodschicago 🚕

The Verdict: This is hands down the second best pasta/italian meal I have had to date, and certainly one of the best meals of my life. While the best pasta I have ever had was in a tiny restaurant on Lido, Venice (whose name I can’t remember), Monteverde takes you pretty darn close to true Italian taste. Chef Grueneberg makes her pasta with love and passion and it shows. I’m thinking how massive the score would have been if this restaurant was teleported to a location like Mission Hill or Gannon’s. I think Monteverde is on its way to its first Michelin star. I wonder if they just might be sitting on the best pasta in the US!

The Food: My all-Italian meal was going perfectly so far. So how could I not get dessert! I chose the Vanilla bean pana cotta with figs, fig compote, sorbet, pistacchios, and some mystery citrus fruit (query blood orange?) This was one of the most unique (and delicious) desserts I have had the pleasure of trying. The pana cotta had the texutre down. The figs, sorbet, and pistacchios created strong wind gusts 💨, and then finally the subtle citus accents just made the whole thing into a tornado of flavor! 🌪This was once again, a true work of art. Just when I thought the dessert was too liquidy, the provided cookie brought the perfect amount of bite and crunch. It was as if every aspect of the dish was thought out well in advance. Only piece of criticism: the ratio of pana cotta to other ingredients was a tad bit excessive (and it started to feel heavy in the last few bites)

.💥💥💥... 🤯!! Insanely delicious! The gnochetti were moist and slippery with a perfectly soft texture, and coated in pesto and with pinenuts, they brought the house down! Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, the pecorino would stick to the palate and unleash a new wave of flavor... Every single item on this plate elevated the other, creating symphony and pure magic! People rave about chef Grueneberg’s homemade pasta and I finally understand why. The pasta in all three courses tonight was made with love and I could taste it. In fact, I savored it...

The Food: Next up were tortellini stuffed with two kinds of ricotta, and butternut squash. These little packets of naughtiness were quite the delight! They tantilized the buds with savory notes, then burst open to reveal a surprising sweet taste from the squash. The pumpkin seeds added beautifully to the synergy. The sage leaves did their bit elegantly. This reminded of the my favorite item at Cactus club in Vancouver: butternut squash ravioli with pinenuts and sage leaves. This was a graceful dish.

The Food: It was but a dream! This taglierini, doused in parmesan and butter, was a classy and delicious vehicle for these shavings of white gold. The white truffle aroma instantly drained my pituitary reserves of endorphins... I took in a mouthful of the pasta and the truffle, and it gave back long minutes of deliciousness. The sounds around me muffled, the sights blurred, the thoughts halted, the emotions muted... the only thing I could smell was the truffle, the only thing to see was the cheesy strings holding together the pasta... the only thoughts were how good this tastes... the only emotion was pleasure... I have a feeling this one will have its place in my memories for a very long time...

The Food: Started with smoked fish rillettes and polenta. Let me tell you: this took me on quite the joy ride! The blocks of polenta had crisp walls that happily gave way to further warm and moist polenta inside. It was like biting through the hard shell of a savoury chocolate bar, to get to the soft caramel inside... Then there was the rillettes: fatty blob of smoky richness and goodness! The dried cherry tomatoes and pickled onions put forth a show of solidarity with the main components, but the capers (those little bombs of flavor!) dove in like the Kamikaze, and finished it off with a bang. Now rinse and repeat in every bite!

The Setting: The fact that I am posting a bokeh of a random street should be telling... You can’t really see it well but Monteverde is located at the corner of a relatively quiet street (by downtown Chicago standards) I really wanted the setting to be less random and boring... Stepping inside, it felt crowded and cramped (though I’m sure some would appreciate the hip vibes). I’m also not a fan of dark lighting, as the pictures dont turn out so great (as you will see next)

One of the best meals I've had in my life was at #monteverde, Chef Sarah Grueneberg served an amazing egg yolk ravioli.

I thought it would be an open space with a white-sterile appearance but instead it was cozy and warm. Get the beef cheek and foie gras tortellini soup with Lambrusco on the side to add.
