CLASS HIGHLIGHT: Yoga Nidra✨
Yoga nidra is based on the ancient teachings of meditation and loosely translates as “the sleep of the yogi.” This process of meditative self-inquiry guides us through all the layers that make up who we are and helps to awaken us from our “sleep” of conditioned patterns, habits and self-limiting beliefs in order to live as our true nature. Yoga nidra helps to eliminate stress, engage healing, resolve trauma and neutralize anxiety, fear, anger, depression, insomnia and chronic pain. With consistent practice the qualities of joy, peace, empathy, forgiveness, and loving kindness towards ourselves and others begin to express more freely in our lives.
The class will begin with 15 minutes of gentle yoga poses* to help our body-minds settle into stillness. Then, while reclining in a nest of blankets (or if you prefer sitting upright), you will traverse the ten stages of yoga nidra through a guided meditation that will step-by-step release tension in the body and the mind.
The yoga poses are optional; you may prefer to settle by following your breath alone. ✨We are excited to offer Yoga Nidra on Thursdays at 10:30am.
Please join us in welcoming Dian to Yoga Olas! We are fortunate to have Dian guiding Yoga Nidra each Thursday at 10:30am, starting today!
Dian Shirley, RYT-500, C-IAYT, is certified by the International Association of Yoga Therapy as a Yoga Therapist and by The Chopra Center for Wellbeing as a Vedic Educator. Her journey to yoga began during a particularly challenging family situation. She was drawn to take a yoga class that completely settled her overcharged nervous system, at least for the hour of the class. Continuing to draw solace from yoga, she found that the quieting down she experienced on the mat began to naturally bleed into her daily life.
While attending The Chopra Center’s Seduction of Spirit retreat, Dian was introduced to Primordial Sound Meditation and Ayurveda and learned a beautiful style of hatha yoga The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga. This retreat was merely an appetizer that catapulted her into teacher training as an Vedic Educator. She has furthered her yoga studies through workshops in Restorative Yoga with Judith Lasater, Chakra Yoga with Anodea Judith, Yoga Anatomy with Leslie Kaminoff, and in YogaEd Teacher Training for children.
After experiencing the therapeutic benefits of yoga, Dian studied Somatic Yoga Therapy under Janice Gates, pioneer in the field of Yoga Therapy. During this training, she also trained with Dr. Richard Miller in Integrative Restoration (iRest) Yoga Nidra.
When she isn’t mentoring Ayurvedic self-care, offering opportunities for self-healing through yoga and meditation, or teaching mind, body, spirit workshops, Dian can be found hiking in the mountains with her dogs Jake and Cassie or writing at a coffee shop. With a strong teacher/student archetype, she is in her element when learning new things about body, mind, and spirit! Dian’s inner child loves most any type of creative play as well as to move her body through yoga, walking, cycling, swimming, dancing, and – most of all – hiking!
Dian is thrilled to be a part of the Yoga Olas community. In her classes, students explore somatic awareness through yoga nidra and gentle, almost restorative, poses.

What was going to be an easy overnight bikepacking trip in Salida turned into a one day 50 mile ride with gear due to there only being one water source... at mile 10. At least the weather held off and I made it back before the storm and darkness to get water. A little change in plans but the views were nice and the riding was good, minus the first 15 miles of climbing. The rocky downhill sections were great though.
Being the health coach I am, I jumped at the chance to try some new camp/backpacking foods last weekend while I was camping near Salida with my daughter. I usually bring some food to make but also like to be lazy and let others do the cooking sometimes (and with so many cool products out these days, why not?!)
I went to my friend’s shop @mountainsidegearrental and picked up some @peakrefuel after checking out the ingredients. Lots of protein and real ingredients - I’m a fan! They were both really tasty. It said 2 servings... but it was dense food and we’re small, so I’m going to say there were 4 servings.
Definitely swing by @mountainsidegearrental to check out their food selection, get their rad stickers and check out all the outdoorsy-nerd gear. #shoplocal#goldencolorado
I have so many thoughts running through my head on the trail. I’m strong. I’m weak. Brave. Terrified. Too fast. Too slow. And then, for just a moment, I’m rolling. At my (beginner-ish) skill level, every ride is a free therapy session. There really is something to that whole doing one thing per day that scares the shit out of you.
Looking out across the valley (and down to town) on my early morning jaunt. The light is so pretty, although the air is very hazy. No wildfires in my immediate vicinity, but I know some of this haze is from fires. Sending good energy to all those impacted! And doing a little rain dance for all of us who desperately need it!
Day 11 | 20 miles | 3775’ elevation gain
Hitch hiking/riding in pick up trucks to Salida and finally starting to make friends with this trail. I love it when people talk behind my back about my pack. Like “her pack is so small but I just wouldn’t....” #coloradotrail#thruhike#salidacolorado#simplehostel
